The fan is a bit loud at low speeds, but it's doing a lot of work, it's cooling the turbo, the intercooler, radiator, the etorque battery pack, AC, etc. Having driven one for a few days in 100+ TX heat it never let the coolant levels go above 200F. I wanted to hate the engine because my initial reaction was that the whole system is a bit overdesigned, but it kind of won me over for the period that I had it. The Touareg did just fine, it got to the top of the mountain just fine. The moment where it touched borrow slightly and tapped the tree with the minor are not problems, the Touareg is a bigger vehicle so that will happen to all bigger vehicles, the Jeep ran a better line (if u look at the video you can see that the Jeep received better directions from the navigator than the Touareg received, so the Touareg was aligned poorly to go over that rock). We can also see that the Touareg has a much more comfortable ride, which is important because the Jeep has a severely kidney busting ride that just beats up your body as you get older). The Touareg also has plastic parts that can be superglued or replaced, so that is the same as the Jeep, but of course VW prices might be higher but if it is then you can simply pick up your plastic at a junkyard since this is an off-road vehicle, it does not matter if the colors don't match and it doesn't matter if it is scraped up either, off road vehicles should look like they go off-road every day.

11:40 Tommy, you're exactly right. Despite the reduced articulation of an independent suspension compared to a straight-axle suspension, the independent suspension overall will be more comfortable. This matches my experience riding/driving in military vehicles, trucks, SUV's, and crossovers. For folks who no longer or do not have the physical and mental endurance of withstanding the pronounced side-to-side sway of straight-axle suspensions, lifting wheels at rough obstacles is a reasonable sacrifice of articulation assuming the vehicle has BLD-effect of traction control and/or lockers for that comfort of fully-independent suspension.

A 5/10 difficulty rated trail shouldn't be too "butt clinching" .. I know both of those vehicles can handle harder trails. The ruby could do red cone with the diffs unlocked with proper driving. I just ran the T-33 wreck trail (near lyons) last week with some guys from work and think you should take the touregg up there. It has some "real" rock obstacles (6/10 rated) that will require careful lines and probably put some wheels WAY in the air on that thing (fun!). This is on the easier end of the trails I've run but just hard enough to get "serious" (weeds out stock SUV's).

14:27 Sorry guys, wrong conclusion. The weight is NOT the issue. The front locker is the issue. In a vehicle with limited articulation, the importance of lockers is amplified as wheels lift and loose traction immediately. With a front locker, the touregg would crawl up all these things just as easily as the ruby, lifting wheels the whole way and not caring. The issue with IFS/IRS, is that the threshold where a locker is required kicks in much earlier, but once the locker is engaged, it can go anywhere a rig with a lot of articulation can go as long as the driver has the balls to do huge wheel stands. If you want proof... I'll take you for a ride in my H3 (5000lbs empty as configured, 6000lbs GVWR and close to that with passengers/gear). It has front/rear lockers, skids/sliders, and follows lifted jeeps that weigh less up trails rated 6-8/10 no problem, just does way bigger wheel stands with limited front articulation (IFS).

Have someone cut some 3/16 aluminum plate for the sides on the under belly and riv-nut it in. Then a ladder type skid down the middle with some 1-1.5 inch DOM tubing. A 1x4 steel box tube would work great for rock rails and you could even add tube to the upper side of the box tube as a rub rail. Just takes a little measuring and basic fab skills. You could have that thing clad up under there like a HMMWV pretty easily since it's so flat.

Double check your build sheet there guys (Tommy commented that the Rubicon has 410 gears) not sure about the new JL's but in the JK's the 410's were only standard in the Manual transmission The automatics were 373's even in the Rubicon unless you special ordered it with 410's! Nice little bait-n-switch from FCA I only recently figured out... Also I've really been enjoying these Touareg off-road videos!

How much difference does the rear diff lock make? I own one with air suspension and only centre diff lock. Is the advanced traction control gonna get me through most things?

I had a 2007 Touareg V10 TDI and as far as performance and how much of a tank it felt like, I was never disappointed. I have a few videos of it on my channel. Only took it off road twice and it felt invincible.

Do you get in the US a VW T-ROC ad while watching this too? Touareg was a strong one ... and is as used one here a great car, but deserves solid maintenance to be a good over years or decades.

Just picked up a 2010 VR6 Touareg, we had a 08 LR3 and this feels much more modern. Both are heavy vehicles but the VW actually feels “light” compared to the LR3. The Rover actually didnt have terrible problems until around 130k even with preventative maintenance. Rolling the dice again with a pretty weird vehicle VW, does scare me but time will tell. The battery under the drivers seat is terrible btw.

Roman "I'm gonna hit a tree" Mica finally hits a tree! I still think a cool series would be to buy old suvs every 90 days and showcase their abilities. It could go on the classics or off road Channel. Great job on this video! An off road review that really goes off road! And I think the VW did great!

Hi Guys, great video. You will have to do it again, this time the Rubicon without lockers, just sway bar disconnect. I recon it will still be better than the Touareg. I never used diff lock on my JK rubicon. Eventually sold it because it made off road boring. Got a JKUL Sahara diesel now, love it.
@DriveCarToBar4 жыл бұрын
As long as you're careful, you can keep the VW from eating parts. The part where he was worried about hitting the tree, also shows a huge weak point in independent suspension on larger off-road obstacles. Where the Wrangler came in and zipped right through with its wheels cranked hard to the right, the Touareg could have been in trouble. Having the steering hard over at lots of compression or droop and bashing against rocks is a very good way to mangle CV joints. Isuzu Trooper guys know all about that on the front ends of those SUVs. They're great and you can get lockers and fit big tires without issue, but when you start throwing them with their great articulation, at big rocks, they eat CV joints. Not really a fault of the vehicle, it's just that CV joints aren't really made for that kind of punishment. As long as you don't beat on them too much, they usually hold up.

Does anybody know in which countries the Touareg was available with a front differential lock? Can’t find anything about that.

I say source the front diff and retrofit it in. That Toureag is more impressive to me than the Jeep.

I agree. The Jeeps (jk,jl) are a fashion statements now I love the idea of showing up in the VW and matching them and being very comfortable. Fraction the price.

Once you put an early Touareg's transfer case into low, the ESP/traction control programming changes to off-road specific operation. It will brake the wheel that has no traction to transfer power to the wheel that does have traction. It might not be quite as good as an actual locker, but it's close. It's very highly capable as-is. The front locking differential was never an option in the U.S.. But, the parts to retrofit it do exist in Europe.

Lewis my friend , Base price of V8 Toureg was over 45k in 2005. That’s 59k in 2019 dollars. That’s the comparison. Not a new vehicle vs a 15 year old vehicle.. With your logic , no new car is worth the extra money over a used one , since they all do similar things.

That VW was way ahead of time, an old car vs a new jeep, to be honest I'm very impressed with the VW, it's the best of both worlds, I know for a fact it would behave much better than the jeep does on the high way, and it's just as capable off road, I wonder what the newest VW toureg is like, is it as capable as the old one?
@greenstoic40295 жыл бұрын
Fabricio Vargas Unfortunately for North America the 2nd Gen Touaregs did not come with air suspension or the transfer case, only a full-time AWD system with an “off-road” mode. Still, it is impressive for what it is and is still very much the same comfortable yet capable VW SUV. Also, they are probably the best value for used SUV’s period (especially the TDI’s) in my opinion at least. Hard to beat something with standard AWD, 7700 lb tow capacity, can get 30 mpg on the highway (TDI), and comes with a 100,000 mile power train warranty from the factory.

The Touareg dominated price wise age wise fuel efficiency-wise versatility wise probably reliability wise over the course of maybe three more years. Currently if I'm wrong but it got everywhere that Jeep got correct? I have one question where exactly did it fail next to the Jeep? Yeah I'm a VW guy I'm a VW diesel guy. But I get it you got so much invested in that Jeep so it's hard not to cheer for it and expect to make it the winter right I get it. But in all practicality and reason and money not growing on trees the Touareg dominated hands down! Great video I love to seeing somebody compare the two VW needs giving some proper respect and it looks like some people are going to save a lot of money and make the right choice the first time with your off-road ventures! Good work guys really great video

All my life i was thinking that you decrease tire pressure on sand and on rocky road it should be hard as these rocks. But still Touareg is the winner here. I had one and for sure it’s a good car. Little too expensive to maintain it right but.. good off roader and on highways that 4.2 makes it better than all classic off-roaders
