Matt Ryan honestly deserved better. People forget Matt Ryan used to be able to lead 4th Quarter Comebacks (At this point, I believe he's ranked #4 all-time), even with a bad O-Line. When you think about it, a lot of the reasons why he has that rank is because Atlanta hasn't had a good defense in decades. Atlanta has had a history of getting bailed out by talent on Offense whether it be from Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Michael Turner, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez, the list goes on. When you look at the Defense, Atlanta hasn't had a notable defense since the Grits Blitz era.

Ryan had Shanahan who thinks football is like hockey & the players on the field can *only play* offense OR defense not both. He _still_ coaches like that. As for Rodgers... He has been _cursed_ by having been drafted by the Packers. From Day One they threw him _at_ Brett Favre & said "Go: Learn." Favre humiliated him often. Then when Rodgers _exceeded all_ the expectations the Packers *had* for him _AND_ won them a super-bowl, they simply continued to treat him like a Slow Child & unwanted step-child & never treated him with any respect. Just this week he revised his "top ten all-time QB" list & put Brady on top, Aaron Rodgers on it, but way down on it. He finally succumbed to what he himself has said was stupid, non-thinking reactions & done this. Brady has had many a 4th quarter comeback because he has *always played for teams with defense that* allowed him to play badly for three quarters. Brady has won games where he & his offense scored zero points! I realize that offensive tackles rarely win or lose games in _ANY_ quarter but you _still have to_ give better QBs the same context to measure them from before you can put Brady above them. He himself has made at least three videos about how Brady's teams always keep him in games & how he's benefited from multiple team stats that are outside of the QB's control. Whether or not it's *intentional* (but I have a feeling that it is) Brady slouches through the first three quarters of every game whereas everyone else _has to_ play all four quarters. When the opposing D is tired, Brady hasn't broken a sweat yet. You can't _DO_ that on the Falcons or Packers.

@Gungho73 Жыл бұрын
What he did his first year in the league will probably go a bit underrated in the greater picture as rookie QB's are starting to have that unexpected demand on them to be playoff bound year 1. Reality was, that was very much not the expectation in Atlanta at the time. Moreover, Matt Ryan seems to have healed the wounds of that area post Vick era. For a franchise that has been historically unsuccessful at best, many of the best years came with him at QB. When I look at a player in my era at the position that played for a significant portion of time and was perhaps just as much responsible for success at times with lesser teams as he was a choke artist, my mind goes to (I feel) the very overrated Phillip Rivers for finding ways to throw a bad pick in a bad spot; Ironically a head to header in which Ryan does that was shown in this video. And I still feel that way. Which is an apt comparison, as both will be argued someday for the Hall of Fame and both will likely not get in for their worst moments. But in the long term discussion, Matt I feel is closer to a Dan Marino comparison, then a Tony Romo one in Rivers case. 51 will always be with Ryan, as will some of the teams that should've gone to the Bowl prior. But I'd blame that more in that specific case on questionable decision making on his staff. But there is no doubt in my mind that the Atlanta Falcons best era of consistency doesn't occur without Ryan suiting up for them. I think he's unlucky and that their teams failures ended up resulting in the team to win or participate in the SB. I don't blame him for Indianapolis either especially because I felt at the time he was starting to regress and Indianapolis was a team that had already peaked throughout the last few seasons. I think he went to that team at the wrong point in their timeline and wrong time in his career. At that position people think you can stave off regression with talent around you. You can play better certainly, but true decline cannot be obfuscated.
@Gungho73 Жыл бұрын
I know someone will say Brett Farve as well, for as many bonehead plays he made he made tremendously impossible plays and also went to 2 SBs with 1 victory in town built around football and is a HOF. But I think Rivers is a more apt comparison because these two will have to rest their case on success and failure in their respective careers. I don't think either will get in just to be clear, there's too many potential HOFs or current HOF's in the era they played at position to justify it in my mind. When you actually think hard on players who will or are in, he is the type of player we talk about 30 years as a NFL Films top 10 players of his era player, as a hall of "Very Good-er."

I put Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers in the same category. They were both excellent QB's, who put up big numbers but both of them struggled to control the momentum of important games. They both played great with a lead.... as long as it wasn't too big of a lead. But neither one of them were very good at mounting comebacks. I actually think Rivers and the Chargers were more unlucky overall. Ryan definitely experienced some bad breaks, but the Falcons defenses weren't as bad as the raw statistics might indicate. People need to consider the fact that during the Falcons best seasons, the defense allowed a lot of garbage time stats in games they won. I forget the exact details, but during that Superbowl season, the defense was stifling in the first 3 quarters. They held a lot of teams under 250 yds of total offense until the went into Dime or Prevent defenses in the last 10 minutes. They also ended up on the field more often because the offense was either scoring quickly or committing a horrific turnover. All things considered, they were pretty solid, but circumstances weren't in their favor statistically. Even in the Superbowl, they owned the Patriots. In the 3rd quarter, they even managed to force the Pats to drain 7 minutes off the clock for a measly 3 pts and then got a missed PAT after another long drive at the end of the quarter. If the Falcons could have managed a single FG in the 2nd half, the game would have been over. The fact that every drive ended in a punt or turnover, is what lost the game.... not the defense.

When it comes to wins, people always seem to fall into the extremes of "Wins are a QB stat" or vice versa. In reality, it's more of a case-by-case thing. Can't always give one guy on a team of 11 all of the credit, but you also can't blame everything on them either. SB 51 and the Colts vs Vikings games were mostly out of Ryan's control, coaching is a major factor in those losses. Sort of off-topic, but I think the 2023 season showed how important coaching is to player/team success. One guy can't do it by himself.
@pozziboots2608 Жыл бұрын
Biiiiig disagree. Ryan threw 1 TD in that game vs the Vikings and then proceeded to be basically non existent the rest of the game. If anything I put most of the blame on Ryan for that one. He did fine in the super bowl though.

@@pozziboots2608 Brady was in a similar situation in 2021 vs the Bears, they were up 35-3 at halftime. Yeah he contributed more to the lead, but both him and Matt putt up the same number of 2nd half TDs...zero. Both squads only scored a single FG after building the big lead. The difference being the Bucs defense held Chicago scoreless while the Colts defense completely collapsed. Brady didn't even have to finish out the game, he got to sit and chill for the 4th quarter because the defense was playing so well. So just like Brady isn't the reason for Tampa Bay holding on to win, Ryan wasn't the blame for Indy blowing it.

Allow me to throw some stats at you: You want to talk stats. Let’s look at Matt Ryan. He is 8th all time in passing yards. It would take less than a thousand more passing yards for him to be ranked 6th all time. He is above Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, John Elway, Matthew Stafford, and Russell Wilson. Pretty good company. Ryan is also 9th all time in passing touchdowns. He is above the same people except for Aaron Rodgers. He is 18th all time in Passer rating. 12th all time if you take away guys who’s careers aren’t 10 years long or more. He is above Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisburger, and Matthew Stafford in that regard. So is he a hall of famer? He has many awards and accolades including MVP, OPOY, OROY, and 4 pro bowls. He was also snubbed of an MVP in a season that was better than his 2016 MVP season. He has 4 4,000 yards seasons, which is tied for 6th all time. In two different seasons he was less than 100 yards away from having 5000 passing yards. Which would’ve made him one of only 10 players to do it. He would be in the company of Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Patrick Mahomes, Ben Roethlisburger, and others. He would’ve also been one of only 4 players to do it more than once, being tied with Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes with 2. And I know it ain’t fair to talk about what ifs. But come on…that’s pretty damn close. If all of that shit isn’t Hall of Fame worthy then I don’t know what is!

The Passing Yards Stat Leading Super Bowl Choking Boston College Graduate Guy who was a step below the GOATS but could compete with them. but BAD TURNOVERS Let his opponents back in games which should have been a LOCKED UP-Win. 1:43 Boston College Matt Ryan 3:05 "You Blew It." 4:37 2015-2016 Matt Ryan was Great until the very end of the line. 6:37 8:45 THE COLT MELTDOWN IN US BANK STADIUM, MINNESOTA. 9:33 Those gaudy numbers of Matt Ryan. Superbowl calibur QB without the Rings to show for it.

I've sat through a lot of Falcons "Quarterbacks" over the years. Matt Ryan, as much as he is a New-Century Dan Marino, is a top-3 QB for the franchise. Not a high bar to clear, tbh, but he clears it more than most.

I appreciate this video. I am a huge falcons Homer and was a big Ryan fan. I still respect the dude and was really hoping his trade to Indy would prove a lot of haters wrong. I rooted for him to succeed in his new home... but history is history.

Highly underrated. He's past his prime now unfortunately. His career was wasted with poor defenses and run support.

If you are a falcons fan 💀 he was nice because it went from vick -> jail, to a rookie in the playoffs and 11-5. That superbowl was soul crushing tho. Not his fault imo. Being a qb is tougher than a $2 steak

Matthew Stafford was always known as Unlucky. Matt Ryan was always Matty Ice. Marino got dissed for not getting a ring and Elway was accused of choking before his final 2 seasons. Ryan’s in good company.
@CONSOLETRUTH2 Жыл бұрын
Not Ryan's fault that the Falcons blew a 25 pt. lead to the Pat's as he didn't play on defense which, as we need to remember, is the half of the team that is SUPPOSED to keep the other team from scoring.

its a little bit of both when you look at it. dont wanna be cliche but as the qb its all on him.

Feel bad all you want. He didn't do a single thing that second half. Julio bailed his ass out. He choked that game as much as the rest of the team did. He's a great qb but a perfect example of having every trait but that clutch factor.

As a lifelong falcons fan this video was hard to watch. All I want is a SB win. I got one from the braves last year, and now that’s all I want.

If blame could be placed on one person not named Ryan, it is Thomas Dimitroff. For all that he did to surround Matt with offensive weapons, he knew nothing about building a defense. So many top picks went to guys like Peria Jerry, Duke Riley, Takk McKinley, etc.

I will always remember Ryan for seeing him in his first career start as a rookie when, with his first pass, threw a TD. I can't think k of any other QB who did that yet I. An name 2 QBs whose first pass was a pick 6 and those 2 are Bretf Favre and Sam Darnold.

As a falcons fan, I’ve shit talked “Matty Ice” since his rookie season… but lowkey, watching him in indy this season hurt my heart. He’s a good dude and he doesn’t ever give up. It’d be so cool if ATL could get him back on the roster for one last season.

Matt Ryan had all the talent in the world and his passing stats are a reflection of his ability. He had arm strength, extra zip on deep passes, IQ, pocket awareness, and good throwing mechanics. He truly became a top tier QB in 2016, his MVP year, and peaked in that season. His 144 passer rating in the first half of Super Bowl 51 was insane! However, Ryan's team had the lead in both playoff games and he never had to play from behind. The Falcons defense collapsed against the Patriots, but he did have the ball in his hands in the final minute of SB51. He could've challenged Kyle Shanahan's playcalling and called a running play instead of a passing play to potentially win the game, but he didn't. With his career stats, MVP season, 4 Pro Bowls, & Offensive Player Of The Year award, he'll probably get into the Hall Of Fame on the second or third ballot, but not on the first. He isn't on the same level as Tom Brady & he never will be.

Matty Ice is our Dan Marino. He's 7 in all time passing. I remember when he did pass Marino in yards I thought it was spectacular. Matt Ryan Deserved more than he was given for sure, and as a falcons fan I'll always say he's been our best quarterback in history.

Not quite sure about the hall of fame take here. A lot of people don’t think Phillip rivers makes it. Rivers has more passing yards and touchdowns than Ryan and was a pro bowler 4 more times than Ryan. Since 2000 Brady, Peyton, Brees, Big Ben, Rodgers, Eli and Mahomes all have a better hall of fame resume. Stafford and Rivers maybe too. Hell andrew luck retired before 30 and has just as many pro bowls as Ryan.

Many people forgot that K. Shanahan lost his entire Playbook for 30 minutes during an interview on the Friday before Super Bowl. At 8:25. You also forgot to mention how Devonte Freeman BLATANTLY missed that block that got Matt Ryan sacked out of FG range. Couple plays back M. Sanu wasn't supposed to make that catch so they called a penalty. By the way, did you know M. Ryan's headset was strangely malfunctioning all of a sudden during the 2nd Half. He ran to the sidelines taking his helmet pointing inside to the officials something was wrong. They showed it Live for about 5 seconds and then quickly cut it away. It wasn't Matt Ryan fault. More like the NFL , Commissioner Goddell, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Coach Bellicheat and Tom Shady had dynasty of deceit to uphold. 🤷🏾♂️ A lot of under the table deals and silent-lip contract happen in the sports world. The Super Bowl being the biggest of them all, is a ocean of them. 🤷🏾♂️

I have these types of debates all the time about what makes a player great. Was Jerry Rice an amazing WR because he had Montana and Young? Or were they great QBs because they had Rice? Was Brady an amazing QB because he had Belichick or was Belichick an amazing coach because he had Brady? The key is to see what happens without that player. Brady left NE and still won a SB without Belichick. Belichick has a losing records as a head coach without Brady. The fact that a Brady never had a losing season speaks a lot about how key he is. Some teams win or lose as a team and you can’t point to a particular player. Some teams lose despite having a Hall of Famer. Barry Sander, OJ Simpson, Dan Marino, JJ Watt. So you know it’s not on them. Some teams are stacked to the rafters with talent and can’t get back to the Super Bowl in 28 years of trying, so it’s hard to blame the players. I think Ryan is on the cusp of it’s his fault. Not just in the SB loss, but in the Falcons having a losing record for so many years. He goes to IND and throw 14 TDs and 13 INTs and brings the Colts down. Granted they weren’t a strong team, but it had been a couple years since they were a 4-win team.

8:40 bro, if you know anything about Kyle Shanahan, you should know he does *not* let the QB audible out of most plays. Matt Lafleur, who was the QB coach in Atlanta from 2015-16 and worked with Kyle before and after that, when asked about the offense they ran said, and I quote: “We’re running a system I first picked up while working with Kyle (Shanahan) in Houston a decade ago, and we’ve never really had a quarterback who’s had complete freedom to change plays at the line, because that’s not really the way the offense is set up.”

Unlucky. Haven't even watched the vid yet, I'm not a Falcons fan, and even I can say that Matt Ryan may very well be the unluckiest star in NFL history. He should be a first ballot Hall of Famer, but I honestly don't think he'll make it in because his reputation is as one of the greatest choke artists ever. It's such a disgrace that he is seen that way.
@darkhawk4863 Жыл бұрын
Is Matt Ryan... Dan Marino? Unquestionably great passer who missed out on a ring because, despite their obvious talent, they never truly had a full team around them. Peyton Manning almost fell into this camp, as well, but managed to escape it exactly twice. Marino and Ryan never quite got there, but their arms still got them pretty darn far.

Believe it or not, there was a time when Matt Ryan constantly made 4th Quarter Comebacks, even led the league at a point, mainly because Atlanta hasn't had a defense in decades.
@greenswamponion7330 Жыл бұрын
Nah definitely unlucky. His defenses were almost always bad. When they weren't actively being garbage the falcons made the playoffs. If he had those Patriot squad defenses that Brady did the falcons easily would've had 2-3 rings with him

dude gave the falcons a 25 point lead on the patriots, but it's still his fault they lost.
