I'm a Yorkie now retired to Lincolnshire and we used to visit Harry Ramsdens frequently for superb Fish and Chips. Here in Lincolnshire the Fish and Chips are lovely but sadly ( for us) they cook 'skin on' not something we like. In West York's where we originate from it was always cooked with skin removed.

Billy Murgatroyd, the founder was an old mill owner and when the mills shut down Billy used his assets to develop this new venture. Hi Brian, you are underselling Yorkshire, something Yorkshiremen, don't usually do. The last three suits I had made, were all Yorkshire woollen worsteds, from mills in Halifax. Yorkshire worsteds, are still among the best in the world and I would always pick them and did for years, prior to retirement. I live in London, so I have never been to Murgatroyd's, but it looked great, you are lucky to have it on your doorstep. I am fortunate to have a few decent fish & chip restaurants nearby and they will have to do, all the best.

There are some terrific fish and chip shops in Yorkshire and I've seen this one reviewed before. I don't necessarily think you need nice surroundings for simple fish and chips, but it certainly seems really pleasant decor without being over the top for traditional food like this. The tea was 'proper' and it needs to be to accompany fish and chips. The haddock looked beautiful and succulent and the batter yummily crispy. And thank goodness for properly thick mushy peas too. Really nice Gary and I think the price was OK for all-in! Totally agree with your 10/10! 👍

Wow Gary and Mr Cameraman, what a brilliant vlog, so many firsts here we need to mention. First impression of the place, talk about clean and tidy, the place was amazingly smart and that always gives me confidence in a place as they clearly care. Food, as soon as it came out it had that wow factor and looked the business, and as for portion size you just can not criticise that. I loved the fact also that nothing was swimming in grease as often happens in a lot of places. Also i know i go on about it, but the camera work here and close up's were A1, it was like i was actually there. Well defiantly a 10/10 for me, especially as it was nearly a tenner less than Blumenthal's place, and with no service charge. Chris.

I live in Leeds and Murgatroyds is the only place I go for fish and chips. I agree with your rating. The other thing is no matter how busy they are, (and it’s nearly always busy), all the staff are so helpful, friendly and kind . Many have worked there for years which has to be a good sign. So glad you enjoyed it as much as I do. We’ve lots of places much nearer but none compare 👍🏻

I went to that place as well following the GaryEats recommendation. The queues are crazy but its a sign that they're doing something right! Baguettes are definitely good - I went for the lamb and onion one. For £6 its great value given how much meat you get and given how expensive most places are in London. I also went there after work to buy some cold meats (Italian sausages, steak etc) to take home and cook. I can definitely recommend them.

Hi Gary. On the strength of your recommendation I've been to Murgatroyds 4 times in the last month, it really is top drawer fish and chips as good as anywhere in the UK. Great value for money especially the senior citizens (over 60) 3 course fish and chips special for a bargain £15.50! And that includes peas 3 slices of bread and tea or coffee. I opted for the prawn cocktail starter which was an extra £2.50 which was worth it because of the generous portion of north Atlantic prawns which were succulent and juicy. I had a slice of homemade cheesecake with cream which was delicious. A proper 3 course meal for £18. Keep up the good work Gary because you're the best UK food vloggers bar none pal. Good timing for me, I'm planning to make some chip shop curry sauce from scratch at the weekend to have with some fish and chips. Hopefully it will turn out as nice as the sauce you had here. The batter on that fish looked amazing and plenty of premium looking fish inside. Should have made a chip butty for Mr Cameraman to help you polish off the stack of bread. As a southerner, I'll concede to the good folk up north, when it comes to fish and chips, they run rings around us on most occasions.

Yet another great review and I totally agree with your marking. You cannot beat fish cooked in beef dripping. Locally where I am only one fish and chip shop still does this and luckily they cook the chips in the beef dripping as well. The fish itself looked really flaky and the batter was just perfection and price wise you just couldn't beat it. As you mentioned you would be paying a lot more in London especially if you eat in. Fish and chips now are classed a luxury meal, I recall it being the cheap meal for the whole family on a Saturday. I worked in the chip shop for some time 1968, loved it! Just 15 but topping up my wages from the bakery that only paid 6 pound per week..

That haddock looked outstanding and even better than the fish I get at my local Traditional Fish and Chips. However they do keep the skin on there which I feel is a bonus. Oh my.....That fish & chips looked absolutely magnificent Gary ! Curry sauce & mushy peas were terrific too ! Yorkshire tea (what ese) to wash it all down with. The perfect meal ! My wife & I had fish & fish 'n' chips 4 times during our UK holiday this year (July-Sept) and loved it every time ! We preferred haddock for the taste. We had never tried curry sauce before but we loved it. Wish they did that over here. We had haddock & chips in Oban & Plockton (Scotland) and Robin Hood's bay North Yorkshire coast & in Falmouth. I don't think fish 'n' chips here are a patch on what we could get in the UK. Batter is never crispy, you can't get mushy peas or curry sauce and you never know exactly what sort of fish you're getting most of the time. Usually is a variety of shark. My word Gary, you have my mouth watering now !

One of the best Fish n chip restaurants I have been to is ‘steels’ in Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire. They are excellent and come with bread and butter and a pot of tea as part of the deal.

Absolutely right Clive... If you were to take the Harrods Fish & Chips Meal... And the Murgatroyds Fish & Chips Meal... And you had a hundred people try both of these meals... And then asked them to pick their favourite out of the two... I would hazard a guess... That not one single solitary vote would go to the Harrods version of Fish & Chips... Harrods seriously need to up their Fish & Chips game.

I've got to say I am a bit disappointed the chips are not cooked in beef dripping. There used to be a shop down here in Nottingham that did it until the vegetarians ruined it. The chips were gorgeous. However next time I go to Leeds Airport I shall give this place a go.

There's an old style chip shop located in the Black Country Living Museum, they have a sign in the window saying "Fish & Chips cooked in Beef Dripping" which was the old way.

Vegetarians don’t ‘ruin’ anything, I just want to be able to eat haddock and chips cooked in sunflower oil, because as a vegetarian/pescatarian I can’t eat them cooked in beef dripping. If you want it your way, cooked in the Sunday Roast fat - just ask them, as I would ask for mine to be cooked in sunflower oil. If they refuse, and only do your way, I’ll go elsewhere. Okay?!

G'day from Australia!! Hi Gary. I'm absolutely hooked on your channel and your honest, friendly reviews. It's like having a mate have a chat with you. I'll never get to try any of the places you visit, but I can actually 'taste' the food through your descriptions. Here's my challenge to you when it comes to fish and chips: come out to Australia for a visit and you'll find excellent fish and chips with large portions for 50% of what your're charged in the UK. Our fish is all locally caught and the snapper and barramundi is just superb. We eat a lot of gummy shark and whiting on the east coast and more exotic fish (like the barramundi) in our northern states. Congratulations on the channel, keep on providing honest reviews and I'll be watching from afar for a long time to come! Cheers, Wayne.

I’ve eaten here a few times. I don’t live in the area but know people who do and whenever I visit we usually have a meal here. It’s clean,the staff are lovely and the food is delicious.😋. It’s certainly one of the best fish n chip restaurants in the country. Highly recommended!👍🏻

Gary this is awesome and so thorough. Meant to reply to you before. I'm the person who has stomach cancer but it's responding to treatment so I can eat again. The restaurants I have listed to visit are below. I am working through all your old videos and I can develop my list further. Margaritas Fish and Chips- The curry sauce looked amazing. It the fact the batter did not overwhelm the haddock. You said the portions size was good. Aldo jut greasy. Goldman's - I love my steaks medium rare. So I liked what I saw on your plate. Liked the look of the chips and massive fan of peppercorn sauce. Which you gave the thumbs up. Hinds Head - service seemed good, considering you had not booked. The crunch in the chips as you but in!!!! The curry sauce also liked a winner here. The crisp batter was shading, liked they get their fish daily from Cornwall. Plus: Regency Cd Paul Rothe and Son De Vine E Pellicci

So glad you enjoyed it as we weren't disappointed but as for the best in the world ? They are up there but 3 miles away in Guiseley there's The Wetherby Whaler and they're pretty hard to beat with slightly better ambience in my opinion. I'm a Lancashire lad and we prefer cod which sadly seems to be quite hard to find in Yorkshire preferring the cheaper haddock but that doesn't deter a true fish and chip die hard 🤣 You're used to Southern prices so I'm not surprised at your enthusiasm for the price you paid but we recently visited Mother Hubbard's and had this very same meal (minus the bread) for two people for less than £20...not each , that was the bill for the two of us 😁 Awesome vlog and love the real world presentation 👍

Good to see a southerner experiencing yorkshire fish and chips. Mugratoyds is very good, but blakeleys in brighouse just nips it for me. (ive tried loads of them all over yorkshire). ten a penny in yorkshire in beef dripping shops and trounces anything in london (tried loads there as well). Its the beef dripping that makes all the difference to the taste and batter crispness. One thing missing gary was a portion of scraps. Glad you gave it a 10/10.

Looked great but I hate vinegar. After my paper round at 13. I got a job at my local chippy. I took the eyes out from the spuds out of the peeling machine. I did on average of 4 dust bins of spuds a day. Curry and fish has been on my list since 1973, you can’t beat it. Great video Gary
