A group of Army reserve recruits became the first to trial a new training pilot which could be rolled out for all reservists undergoing basic training. The programme was put together after the coronavirus pandemic forced reserves to receive much of their training online.
It combines virtual and field-based exercises and trains recruits from the basics up, including more realistic scenarios for reserves to react to. This new training course could replace the current Alpha and Bravo packages which form Phase 1 training, and, if successful, will be introduced across reserve units from April.

A bit of online theory could help new soldiers understand why they are doing their drills and give them a chance to learn at their own pace. It's not always easy to remember stuff you are taught when you are wet and cold.

Yeah but the obvious lack of muscle memory is slowing their drills down. Yes it will come but you can't learn it in the classroom.

Recruits going through depo must use the issued kit not there own as day sacks are not issued they are taught to use rocket pouches, once they are in battalion they can buy there own webbing, day sacks jet boils ext if they wish to do so, but the standard issued kit is not bad it gets the job done.

You've got to wonder what they were able to learn virtually... How can you learn fire and manoeuvre drills, fieldcraft, personal admin in the field, weapons handling, etc., etc, etc, sitting at a computer screen? You may be able to watch demonstrations but that is not even close to having to do it yourself... That is much more difficult, and requires actual in-person training (and always will). Brigadier Butterwick "got it" at the end, Reservists enjoy getting out and doing the practical stuff in the field and they get much better by doing so, virtual training can never replace practical work. One other thing, why was there a trigger warning on this video? Are people so pathetically weak these days that the sight of some ham acting disturbs them?

The webbing is a shambles, the movements are slovenly and lacklustre, the weapon handling lacks assertiveness and purpose. To be fair, it's not the volunteers' fault per se; they have simply been poorly trained. No disrespect to the reservists; their NCOs should have had all of these issues squared away before they were let loose with weapons, albeit with blank ammo.

Training geared for the Playstation Generation? There is no substitute for real training in arduous weather conditions. This seems to be a cost cutting exercise and doesn't constitute an 'improvement.' Some individuals will be fine with online training, then the moment they are put on the ground in miserable weather, their motivation, or rather, LACK of it, will become very apparent. Far better to rely on real world training, which will weed out the non-hackers very rapidly indeed.

It's hard to do 10 weeks training when they mostly have full time jobs. Should these reservists ever get mobilised they will go through full time, pre deployment training beforehand. The basic training has to fit in with the reservists full time job commitments as much as possible.
@gmailalt6928

Reservists aren’t sent straight out. The point in the reserves is basically to have a pool of recruits with a baseline military knowledge that can be quickly brought up to speed before being mobilised.

It is interesting that the British Armed Reserves always try to get a quart into a pint pot. Most other Western Reserve Forces do the same training as regular in the same period of time. If you do basic training as a reservist say for the USA Army you do the full basic 12 weeks, just like the regulars, and same goes for trade training. Instead of cramming the basics into 6 weekends, and then a two week Course. Yes , British Reserve Forces do things on the cheap. The British Reserve Forces deserve better.
