Is university worth it for the creative industry? I asked a few industry friends!

I had a great conversation with Lesego Tlhabi (Coconut Kelz) about how she broke through the entertainment industry and she spoke about the fact that she studied so much and she doesn't feel like it was worth it. We had questioned if going to university was worth it as we know so many people who have succeeded without it so I decided to ask a few friends and share their responses with you! I think getting a degree in general is a worthwhile investment but I don't think you need to get a degree in the arts to work in the media/arts/entertainment industry. I'm actually really glad that my degree is completely outside of the creative industry (Economic Science) because it's given me additional insights and skills which I wouldn't have learned otherwise.

So true on the additional insights. I would actually recommend someone in the arts to study some kind of business skill because that comes in very handy. Thank you for sharing!!

I personally think it would be great to go to school for a creative career especially if it was more experiential as Lesego mentioned as in more hands on to refine an existing talent or hone a skill, however because of the cost not only of the education but the extras you also need to create your portfolio or thrive in that space it’s not really accessible for the majority. I also think the relationships you would build in a creative university would be so beneficial because the people you are studying with will be the award winning directors, producers, actors etc of the future and networking is extremely key in the creative industry so having those solid relationships built from a genuine place as opposed to networking for the sole purpose of networking to get ahead, would help in the future I think.

Mhm this is some very interesting insight and there really isn't one answer to it. I did Accounting at school right, whilst I was at school I started exploring digital marketing which lead to me starting my YT channel and doing social media content creation as a side hustle. I now work in marketing, I'm studying UX design and I'm slowly focusing on building a career in tech. What I do on a daily has NOTHING to do with Accounting but I wouldn't be here had I not gone to University 😬 so the qualification is a ticket for me and it gets me into the room BUT my experience and work (as a digital creator) are often the ones to speak on my behalf.

That's amazing that you've gone on to do what you enjoy and didn't confine yourself to just accounting. Yeah, many people aren't doing what they studied in university but getting a degree (if you can afford it) can definitely get you through the door! Thank you for sharing :)
