And a major problem with Hadith is that memorisation can not stay stable for multiple generations.

The problem is that modern Sunnis (influenced by Salafism even though they don’t realize or admit it) are hyper militant about Hadith and completely misunderstand how Hadith were utilized in the first centuries of Islam. Early-medieval Muslims were far more flexible with their understandings of Hadith. This goes back to Terron’s excellent point about early Muslims being much more heterodox

Hmm Joshua when he was young and on YT was a passionate critic of Islam , today calling himself a Islamophobe back in the day is imo making appeasement to those he has to work with today , and in doing so he does a disservice to all of us who are not bigots against Muslims but merely critics of Islam. Also he was not right wing , he was in fact very left wing . We all grow up and change that is natural , and like most academics in his field he has to walk on egg shells, but I do find his re-branding of himself and his framing of those of us who are still openly critical of Islam as problematic is just some ivory tower b.s.

Generally, in my experience shia tend to believe that Aisha had many failings as a person and her belief is also in doubt but they don't subscribe to the idea that she was unfaithful to her husband because they consider it to be an insult/blemish in the prophet which will jeopardize his position as a prophet since it is imperative for god to send forward someone who doesn't have apparent blemishes which could be pointed out by his people. They have arrived at this theological position also for all wives of all prophets. There are extreme shias who hold that Aisha wasn't faithful and they do that based on a plethora of hadiths which exist even in sunni sources where Aisha appears to engage extensively about sxul stuff, ad*lt br*astf**ing and all kinds of crazy stuff. I don't personally have an opinion about it being an atheist. It could have been later fabrications or even truth.

We've got a FB group called Islamic Origins and we are having one discussion about understanding Islam from the perspective of the Bible. One of our group tells the story of how his granny was a Christian, but he (I think) is from a Muslim area and at one point about 10 years ago was considering converting to Islam. So he has a deep broad appreciation of both worlds. His final 'take' is that much of Islamic lore, the Hadiths, and possibly even the Medina verses of the Koran are later additions to earlier texts. If you take just the Koran, Mohammed was a "warner" or repeater of earlier monotheistic lore which was getting obscured, in particular by the 'Trinitarian' Roman (Nicene Creed, Father/Son/Holy Ghost) credo. Mohammed wasn't inventing a 'new' religion. If you look at the Geez Ethiopian Bible it has many chapters which are not in the Catholic Bible for example. Not all Bibles are the same (eg Peshita or Syriac Bible) So Islam then becomes a form of Christian restatement of 'true' Christianity'? And during early Islam, there was actually much more interplay and discussion of ideas amongst Muslims, and between 'Muslims' and Jews and Christians than happened later. Later Islam, including Hadiths, are possibly an Abbassid or similar overlay to forge a separate 'Muslim' identity and create clear blue water between Muslims and everyone else that was maybe not present in the very early days. I have heard other Muslim contacts talk of Muslims using the Bible in the early days, if the Koran verses were not clear ..... Historic research seems to be showing that the Jahiliyya idea that there were not many Christians, Jews or other Monotheists in Arabia pre Islam, and that Islam was a fight against Polytheism is historically not very accurate. There were in fact many Christians and Jews in Arabia, and Monotheism was the most prevalent form of worship when Islam was born, which is what rock-carvings seem to suggest, Polytheism having faded about 100 years before Mohammed? Do you think this, for want of a better phrase - Christian-centric view of Islam is considered by the Islamic community in general? How is the Bible viewed by modern Muslims ? A source of inspiration, or of kufr?
