I grew up in a muslim family with a passion for art and drawing. From the moment i held a pencil and drew at 4 years old my mother would tell me that its forbidden and I would go to hell. She said that allah will ask me to breathe in them souls in the day pf judgement! and she wasn’t the only one, she told me to draw only natural scenery since in islam plants don’t have souls but only animals do. From the start of my life islam was a prison, i left it and I continued my path to become an architect and a portrait artist.

As an artist I can understand why an oppressive force would want to suppress art. When you're creating you are generally thinking outside the box. You are thinking philosophically about the world around you. It puts you into a meditative state, you tend to think harder about things around you while doing art. And we all know how much Islam loves people thinking about new ideas.

That also might be why creating and listening to music is so haram. I don't consider myself a professional musician but I'm somewhat of an amateur, however I love writing music and it's very relaxing for me. If only I could buy an instrument. (edit as of mid 2022: i have a guitar! been playing for 3 months now) I haven't sold my soul to the devil lol. I don't think he exists.

My 11 year old cousin had an art exhibition on her birthday. Family came round complimented and bought her art. She was so happy , I guess no Muslim kid is ever gonna get that kind of experience.

My 55 year old MIL actually started painting during the corona lockdown. She got basic supplies and then watched bob marley on KZbin. And she has now atleast 500 scenery pictures. They are not amazing but she got better. And we took 1-2 framed and they looked little better. We put them in not so prominent places like the doors to bathrooms. Our hallway. Maybe one or two in kitchen. Not enough to draw attention but to make it look pretty for a side view 😂

This is probably the most vile doctrine in Islam I can think of... and so much ancient art of civilizations past have been senselessly destroyed because of it. Like the Great Buddha statues in Afghanistan (built at a time when Afghans were Buddhists, imagine that!) and the destruction of the temples of Palmyra... we are lucky to still have the Pyramids, but if Islam hadn't existed we'd have much more. I was once muslim. I loved drawing realistic people, even drew them in boring classes. One time my religion teacher saw it and he snapped, telling me it was a sin because it meant I wanted to compete with allah in the creation of life. I had no such intentions, I just loved drawing. I thought if allah really created everything, that must mean he gave me this 'gift' of my ability to draw and paint and it just doesn't make sense why I'm gonna be condemned for using something he gave me. From then on I slowly moved away from that religion.

To explicate for you, your assumption that the Renaissance supplanted the Christian culture of Europe completely boggles my mind. Its as if you have no idea that much of the Renaissance's artistic output was funded directly by the Catholic Church and that religiosity was high throughout the entire Medieval period. Hence, why it is stupid to believe Christianity is the cause of the "regression" of art in the Dark Ages. There couldn't possibly be other factors such as the diminished urban culture and the decentralization and instability of polities during the early Middle Ages, now could there?

My mom loved to draw and paint as a kid, but she always felt guilty about it. One day in a fit of religiousness, her father burned all her works. Now that she lives in her own house, she and my sister do make art from time to time, but that's only thanks to being less religious. I also never listened to any music until I started to disbelieve in high school/university. I feel like I missed out on so much, but at least nothing can stop me or guilt trip me anymore.

I'm Maldivian. Last year the government destroyed a large area of underwater art, I forgot the artist's name but the art was called "coralline" or something along those lines. (Excuse my memory, a lot has happened since then that are way worse than this so I forgot about it) It had been there for decades and it was part of an entire underwater ecosystem. But people destroyed it because statues are strictly forbidden in Islam.

What a completely uninspiring cult. Growing up in a ultra orthodox Muslim home in the USA I didn’t know why I couldn’t be an artist all I knew is that is that they’re would be serious consequences if my work were found. I’d go out of my way to find new hiding places around the house to ensure that I’d be safe. My mom would often instigate and go through my belonging whenever she had the chance. My oil paintings, my sketches, blueprints would be collected and I was severely abused time and time again. I’d watch my family burn my pictures in the backyard bone-fire pit. Sometimes they’d attempt to make light of the situation by turning the entire thing into a family bbq. In their minds I was committing a sin and they’re doing me a favor by steering me into the right direction. Seeing people my age at school compete in art competitions and live a normal life never seized to break my heart. School guidance school counselors turned the other way when I addressed abuse at home because my family is Muslim it “complicated” things. Abuse became a thing of preserving “traditional and religious values”. Thank you for exposing the truth. You are a gem. 💎

I mean there have been some caliohates which were really into art and sculptures of living things,for example the mughals and ottomans made paintings of living things and most of the scholars at that time had no problem with it,also the palaces in al andalus (which used to be Islamic Spain) had statues there as well.And there is a difference of opinion on whether figures of a living things are prohibited,for example Ibn Hibban (who is a classical Muslim scholar) said that the angels don't enter a house in which the Prophet (P.B.U.H) went to if it had figures but if there is a statue or portrait in a normal Muslim's house he said it would not be problematic,there are also some scholars which say that statues and drawings of living things aren't haram if they are not made for the intentions of challenging Allah or for worship (some examples of these scholars I refer to are Al Qirafi,Muhammed Imarah,and Jadul al Haqq etc.) And they base this off of a hadith which is reported in ḥadīth qudsī: “And who is greater in injustice than one who goes in order to create a creature like My creation?” “goes” here can be interpreted to mean “aims”. According to this, the forbidden thing here is related to the intention of the maker [of the statue, etc.], whether the product is a statue or a hand-drawing of any image. Also the scholars who say statues and drawings (of living things) are not haram mention that if someone for example was going to sculpt an exact model of the moon (or any other spiritless creation of Allah) and seeing as the moon is Allah's creation they say that that would be imitating Allah's creation but the person doing the sculpting wouldn't be sinned for it so they say statues/drawings (of living things) aren't prohibited if the intentions of the person doing them is goos ,also early Muslim rulers minted coins with figures of living things on them and this was during the time of the Salaf (the standing caliph coin is an example of this www.ashmolean.org/standing-caliph-dinar) and when the Sahaba went to countries that they took over when they encountered statues,they only destroyed the statues of worship not statues for decoration or other reasons and this is evident in countries like Egypt and India etc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH3ZoH6fptiVjsU (I'll give some examples of the companions tolerating statues and drawings of animate things for clarification,when Saʿd bin Abī Waqqāṣ (the conqueror of Iraq and one of those promised Paradise) entered the palace of Khosrow II in al-Madāʾin [Ctesiphon, the Persian capital, near modern-day Baghdad]. In that palace there were many figures on the walls and many statues. He did not destroy any of them, in fact they remain where they are to this day. None of the Companions criticized him or anyone else for this and poems were written about these statues and paintings and how realistic they were. A number of companions themselves also entered the palace and they never even thought of destroying those statues/drawings,when the companions went to Egypt (The number of the Companions who entered Egypt was greater than three hundred, as al-Suyūṭī confirmed in Ḥusn al-Muḥāḍara (1/166)) The first city they besieged was ʿAin Shams [today a suburb of Cairo] as is mentioned in Ibn Kathīr’s al-Bidāya wa-l-Nihāya (7/98). It is filled with large statues as ʿAbd al-Laṭīf al-Baghdādī mentioned in the sixth century [of the hijra], saying in his travelogue (p. 96): “Of that [type?] are the antiquities in ʿAin Shams. It is a small city the ruins of whose surrounding wall are visible, it appears that it was a place of worship. In it there are enormous statues carved from rock. The length of a statue is around thirty cubits, and its limbs are proportionally large. There is much writing on those rocks and figures of humans and animals of the unintelligible [ancient Egyptian] writing.” and thing is none of those statues were removed and there is no doubt that the companions saw these statues as Ain Shams was a small area and there were hundreds of companions who entered there but none of them were bothered by those statues/drawings because they weren't being worshipped so that's another reason why some scholars say statues/drawings of animate beings are permissible if they are made with good intentions) and btw all of the companions were ordered by the Prophet Muhammed (P.B.U.H) himself to destroy all timthal and suwar (the scholars who say statues/drawings of living things are permissible under certain circumstances say that tamathil and suwar are images of animate beings which are bworshipped and not statues and drawings of living things in general)

When I was little, I love to draw.It was when I heard a sermon about art being haramI had a conflict inside me. I can't live without drawing because drawing is my life. It's how I cope. Even when there were fatwas saying that you can draw, as long as it's not human, incomplete human, drawn as moral lesson, yada yada, I still can't feel true to my heart when I drew using those guidelines. As I grew up, I just don't care about those anymore and just draw draw draw to my heart's content. There were times when my mother would bitch at me for drawing, and that since I take commissions, she said that the money I received are not blessed. But I don't care.

it was the same for me with music. since I was a kid, I knew I had musical talent. i started singing when I was 6. i could learn to play songs on any instrument just by ear since I was about 10. I started making and producing music (albeit amateurly) in 2018, when I was 15-16. but yeah, there was so much inner conflict. I loved music, I love making it and listening to it. I can't live without it, it's such a huge part of who I am, one of my biggest talents (all my talents are artistic, like writing and drawing lol so I am fvked either way). until I left in 2020, I was in a huge inner conflict. now i make music and upload it on youtube as a hobby, as well as playing guitar in my free time. and it's something I really enjoy.
