This is a great episode! Derek, you are spot on: the internet unfortunately gives everyone (even morons) a voice and that degrades discourse, but true enthusiasts/nerds/etc. will always seek out the experts (like the Carmudgeons 😍). And Jason, to that end, you will never be irrelevant: an informed, data driven, objective voice will always prevail over the vapid douchebaggery of influencers to the enthusiasts (even if we are in a minority) ✌️❤️

Glad to see a new Curmudgeon. Hyphen noted that he was going out riding and I will say it has been nice up here in the Bay Area getting out for rides, but the few cars that are out have been driving like psychopaths. I saw a guy driving on the sidewalk a couple days ago, so he could turn right on red, amongst many odd things in the last couple weeks. Makes me a bit more nervous when riding, especially up quiet back roads.

There's an "alliance" Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi, with shared and cross ownership of each other's equity with a predominant ownership by Renault, but the sharing out may have changed a bit these past months. So you could say that this group would encompass the 3 main marques mentioned and add to that, on Renault side, Dacia, Samsung motors, Lada (AvtoVaz) and Alpine ; on Nissan's, add Infinity, Datsun and Venucia. But this group is not connected to PSA (Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel/Vauxhall and now Fiat- Chrysler) , both groups are pretty much in competition on the same segments, and try to coexist (or survive?) alongside (underneath? )VAG. Thanks for the show and the great content you're offering us guys. Cheer up and patience for the confining, we're all in the same sh*t.. Online auctions for regular cars (local car auctions and Manhiem) are either not running or running every other week with an actual run. Currently cars that are still under warranty are stable but other cars are wildly low or high since people can't inspect/rig them in person. ACV still seems to sell cars at a premium but they are missing a lot of issues which cost them not the seller. I'm a used car dealer in SC-USA (finance through banks/credit unions) and we're still doing decent business but I'm not going to be spending the same money to buy cars right now. The $1200 check everyone is going to get is going to affect prices on many of the cars I buy since a lot of Buy-Here/Pay-Here places are going to buy up everything

This was an absolutely tremendous discussion of the hobbyist end of an industry, and the experts -- and not experts -- who serve as information sources. I had direct experience in a comparable world for much of my career, and saw exactly what Jason and Derek observed. There was an optimistic view of the eventual outcome and a pessimistic view. I was an optimist, but, sadly, the pessimistic outcome won out. For the sake of all car enthusiasts, I hope the better outcome prevails this time. I grew up with subscriptions to 3-4 car magazines at the same time. My face was constantly behind a magazine if I wasn't doing school work. I read monthlys from MotorTrend, Car and Driver, Road & Track, Automobile, Sports Car International and occasionally some of the British publications. The Road&Track annuals with highlights from reviews of the year were some of my favorites. I loved those magazines so much that I saved them and every time I'd move, a couple dozen really heavy boxes of car magazines would come with me. That ended long ago as the magazines got thinner and thinner and more expensive with redundant content on the web. The shift from paper in some ways is a bummer, but that's evolution. But for me, the saddest part of the disintegration of the media is the loss of original, quality writing. I'm so disappointed to click on Road&Track's web site and find that it's mainly pointing to other sources of video and news. Today, most of the quality content is in videos with writing being a very small, and late, afterthought.

I think the influencers are good way for a type of intro/gateway into car culture. The lack of technical info make the videos more accessible to more people/casual viewers

I think an important detail about the market for Car & Driver vs influencers is that people aren’t buying their cars based on some rich kid with a Lamborghini. The people engaging with that content generally aren’t that fortunate themselves. And when they actually come of age and are in the market for a car, sure, you can check out KZbin reviewers, etc, but the service between Car & Driver compared with people like you guys is functionally the same: it’s the actual information that makes a big purchase a rational one. The choice between a KZbin influencer and Car & Driver is just a question of format. Conflating the influencer scene and the market for buyer information is a bit of a false dichotomy.

Slight correction on that comment concerning older cars entering German cities. There is a beautiful thing called "veteran" or "historic" car, which means that in case you have a car in original condition and its at least 30 years old. Then you may driver it everywhere because its a veteran. Dont know if the US has something similar... but it means you actually can drive an E30 in Stuttgart :-)
