I will never forgive the kpop world for this (both the public and online fans) they went after her weight and I am sitting here like ??? Isn't she like 16? She is a kid, plus going through puberty! I know from my experience that during that time ny weight went up and down alot like thats your body growing, its normal! Besides she wasn't overweight or anything, if she had a bad immune system do you really think she could perform the high kick in wee woo? Looking at her dance, I see no fat on her and I WISH I looked like her at her age, she is a perfect weight. Just because she was built bigger does NOT mean she had no talent and didn't deserve attention. But alas, kpop standards are so deep that its impossible to see an idol who has that sort of body type as well. I blame pledis for not protecting her and instead sort of just allowed the hate she got which we got what we got with pristin =/

I don't understand why the big popular rich companies just don't get them trainers and dietitians. I understand if it's a smaller lesser known company but they should do better for them if they want them to loose weight. It shouldn't be for them to lose weight in the first place it should be for them to be healthy because if they're not healthy they're going to get injured they get injured they loose money and time. Also they get sick easier because their immune system is off.
@ninanano
@ninanano 3 жыл бұрын
right? i know the big ones have the money to hire them, so...? 😐 but i think it's about impatience, koreans who do these diets or companies who force their idols into them want their bodies to look like that FAST instead of putting the effort into it with long term exercising and food managing. it's about looking good enough for that comeback around the corner, that party, etc. so they go through extreme diets to get quick results, and probably go back to eating normally after they got to show off the results. then they go right back to the crazy diet if something else comes up. instead of just... getting a personal trainer/nutritionist/going to the gym for long period and having more permanent results and not having to stress about things at the last minute. and of course some just don't have the money so they follow any crazy advice if they're desperate enough

One more thing I'd like to add is the age of idols. They are normally in their early teens when they begin training and are asked to diet. They debut around 15-22 and are at a low weight. The crucial thing is that their bodies are still developing until around 29 years old. If the body is lacking important ingredients that these people don't eat because of a diet, there can be long lasting problems with their health for the rest of their lives. It's not just "unhealthy", it is so dangerous and can damage the rest of your life. Great video as always, your way of providing evidence to prove your points make your videos so reliable! Good job!

something really sad is when i saw someone make a joke about idols getting periods, commenters were bringing up how they probably don't even have any because of their poor nutrition. I knew that one loses their period if they eat too little, but I hadn't made that connection to idols before and it was a kind of reality check to realize the way the beauty standards effect every single aspect of idols' lives, including things you wouldn't normally think of, like periods.

Most idols start training in the middle of puberty, the time when their bodies are developing, and these diets are slowing the development down for aesthetics... 😤😤🕳🏃‍♀️
@Алёша-н4б
@Алёша-н4б 3 жыл бұрын
I started struggling with an eating disorder (caused by a trauma, my goal wasn't weight loss) when I was around 11 or 12 years old. It slowed down my puberty a lot and compared to the guys my age I still look like a 12 year old. I went to several clinics and most 20 or 18 year old girls I met there looked like they were maybe 15 or younger. The body tries to survive so puberty is hold back since it consumes a lot of energy. Energy that you don't have because you aren't eating enough. So just as you said, early dieting (actually dieting in general because going on an extreme diet is probably going to cause an eating disorder and might slow down your metabolism) is really harmful and it's disgusting that those companies force it on teenagers.

It’s just insane how little health education they have. Any person that exercises even half of what idols go have to do, has muscle. If they don’t, it means that their diet is unsustainable, that will strain the shit out of your body and especially if it happens in your formative years. I have been working out for 4 years and had been dancing 7 before that, i have a very small frame tho and I am just 163 cm tall, but I still weigh 48 kg. It’s harder to tell when people with similar frames have pants on but if their bare legs are showing it’s absolutely clear. You can mostly see it in the calf and how developed the front thigh is, you need to look in profile view not the front tho. I know that these is in general but kpop idols are not so special considering that we know that most of them had average bodies in the beginning.

As a korean, I am aware of the toxicity on the topic of weight in the industry and of our own country. One of the reasons many think of themselves as fat is because we do have a slightly more petite figure and smaller bone structure compared to other countries so when we gain weight it makes us look much fatter than we actually are. But thats no excuse for the harsh expectations koreans have to put up with. I, myself, struggle with body weight, as someone who's only 14. In korea, everyone is so slim and pretty. It makes it hard to not compare others with yourself. The influence kpop idols have on teenage girls like myself, is honesty, crazy. Many even acquired eating disorders from following their favorite idols diets. Being skinny is not just normalized in korea, but its more like the bare minimum. They also expect you to meet with the korean beauty standards like double eyelids and slim, high nose bridge. And like being skinny is one thing, but having the idol body? There are many of us that still struggle with our body image even though we are already average to underweight. We wish that our waist was slimmer, thighs were smaller, etc because we want the " golden Idol proportions" I, because of all of this ^^, personally struggle with Anorexia Binge Eating Type where I starve, than binge eat. I just want to say that you are beautiful no matter what. Dont try to live up to others standards. Its going to make you miserable forever really. Stop before its too late. and remeber, that the best body, is one thats healthy. :)

Don’t stress too much about what’s on the idol’s profiles. They’re pm all fake and established idols will readily admit this (usually on variety shows that have a lighter atmosphere or radio shows). Most of the heights and weights are essentially made up stats by the company that they think the public will find appealing to add to the idol’s allure. I know it’s easy to let that stuff get in your head (I’m certainly guilty of doing so, even knowing they’re fake) but just remember it’s all marketing - those stats aren’t real and you don’t need to hold yourself to them. A huge tell is the heights - most of the time they’re wayyy off. So many female idols are listed as 5’6”/5’7” when they’re no more than 5’3”, maybe 5’4” max. It’s super easy to clock when you see them lined up next to male idols (who also lie on their profiles about height just as often). They absolutely aren’t all exactly 50 kg like they all say on the profiles. That’s just pure fantasy. Yes, idols are pm all slim but they do not weigh exactly the same just like they do not all have the same waist measurements. Once an idol debuts, it’s up them to self manage usually (crap companies will overstep like with 9 muses, for example, but that’s not really the norm). They aren’t having weekly or daily weight checks anymore. That alone should tell you the profiles are completely bogus or, at the very least, super out of date.

the weirdest part is when idols are praised for not meeting the standard but in a really weird way. the most recent example is when purple kiss debuted, their comment sections were flooding with people being weird about swan’s body. they weren’t hating on her, but all they would ever talk about was how she was ‘breaking the standard’ or ‘beautiful in her own way’ bringing attention to her body where it isn’t needed. this is a 17 year old girl, she isn’t just an outlet for your toxic positivity. idols like hwasa go out of the way to break standards but swan is doing nothing but existing, just leave her alone

I also want to talk about skinny shaming since it’s so normalised. Just because being thin is considered the beauty standard in Asia doesn’t mean skinny shaming isn’t real. Sunmi had to binge eat because of those comments she received. Ofc ppl can be worried for them but shaming their bodies ain’t it, saying they look sick and ugly is not “caring about them”. Sometimes, they are naturally thin (Lisa, rose..) and Asians are just more petite and I feel like some westerners fail to understand that. I know fat shaming is a big problem and bigger people go through more (at least in Asia) but it doesn’t mean that skinny shaming should be ignored.

I think it's great you brought this up. I have a female friend who is naturally thin and eats all the time, but her mother accused her of being "anorexic", "bulimic", unhealthy, picked on her for how she ate, etc. for her entire life starting at 4 years old. She obsessed over her weight to the point where she doesn't even like eating with people anymore bc she's traumatised from being accused of having an eating disorder and having her portions policed by her mother. Even today she eats more than enough and is just naturally thin but wishes she would gain more weight. If we're going to condemn fat-shaming, as we should, then lets also condemn thin-shaming. It's possible for someone's lifestyle, metabolism, food choices/allergies, work, etc. to cause them to be thin. You don't need to tell someone they're "too thin".

about Kyla: "she's definitely not average" (trigger warning for ED) this person is talking about a child and this person is no doubt a grown man. also Kyla is maybe a size 6, which honestly could not possibly be more average for a 14 to 19 year old girl in South Korea. the standard for kpop idols is not "average", it's borderline anorexic. medically speaking, anyone who is consistently more than 10 pounds underweight is usually evaluated for disordered eating, and the vast majority of idols would fall into this category, since 120 to 140 pounds for young women/girls that are approx. 5'2" to 5'6" is considered healthy, and a lot of female idols are taller than 5'6", and are around 100 to 108 pounds. that's 12 to 20 pounds underweight, and it shows. even though these girls work out constantly, they have zero muscle mass, and you can see how atrophied their muscles look - this is because their bodies are eating up their muscle tissues for energy since there is no more fat to consume on their bodies after years of daily starvation. this is also why some female kpop idols have admitted to no longer having monthly cycles - another huge red flag for starvation so severe that it could be deadly. the body can't spare the cellular energy to perform these basic tasks because they aren't absolutely essential to continue life for the person in question. when you're starving for a long period of time, the body shuts down all processes that aren't absolutely essential to keep the heart, brain and organs working, including monthly cycles for girls. the body will also eat up every single bit of body fat, even in female areas - this is how some female kpop stars can go from being busty as trainees to an american A-cup after debut. this is so unhealthy, both mentally and physically, in ways that I can't even describe. this "forcing idols to be severely underweight" contractual clause is not just for the look of being starving, it's for control. someone who is consistently starving often can't think critically and is very pliable, simply from mental fog and mental exhaustion. I'm consistently disgusted by this issue - these are not "beauty standards" they're thinly veiled control mechanisms to keep idols under the thumb of labels, and they are poorly disguised methods to create public punching bags for the emotionally repressed Korean public to openly shame and feel okay about doing it. in a repressed society, people need excuses to let out their worst impulses, since they are forced to be so reserved in public at all times. insisting that idols maintain anorexia while still maintaining a higher activity level than anyone else is society is obviously impossible, but that's the point - it creates a rat race where those who fall behind at this impossible task are publicly hated and shamed, for a reason that has been deemed socially acceptable, which serves a greater purpose for the Korean public. it's literally like a dystopia, and it's honestly so terrifying and traumatizing for the idols who get entrapped in this system, all the while thinking they are doing it to achieve their dream of music artistry. it isn't about music, it's about money, control and serving a greater (evil) purpose for repressed Korean society.

I want you to explain that to me, and I want you to define ableism in the context of ED diagnosis. do doctors and nurses (heroes) also HATE and discriminate against people with ED for using physical criteria to help diagnose them..? are doctors and nurses, and other medical professionals like myself, the worst kind of discriminatory scum for using physical markers in combination with behavior markers to diagnose mental illness..? you honestly make me sick. not only are you most probably lying about having serious ED (because you didn't have it until I brought up my own experience with anorexia), but you're also shitting all over the entire medical community and how we diagnose patients who are not in their right mind to answer questions honestly and fully. how dare you, especially during this pandemic when those with my degree are developing vaccines to save your sorry ass, and doctors and nurses, the same people you're calling ableist for having diagnostic criteria for anorexia, are literally dying in an effort to treat people with COVID. you seem more and more like a horrible person every time you reach out your hand to type another ungrateful, accusatory reply. you're full of garbage, and you're just another lying, out of control, disconnected from reality kpop stan, based on your other social media. I can't believe how rotten kpop stans can become. you're really out here shitting on doctors and medical professionals who diagnose ED because someone is WORRIED about a kpop idol. if you actually cared about the idols, which you clearly don't give a sh*t about their health, you would also be concerned about girls that weigh 85 pounds at 5 foot 4. but you couldn't care less if they're suffering or worse, potentially looking at organ failure from severe malnourishment. here's a quote from one of the several articles I will be linking to debunk your selfish bullsh*t because blatant lies like "you can't be diagnosed with an eating disorder by using weight as an indicator of disfunction" is what leads girls to NOT SEEK HELP or delude themselves into believing that they can't die from being underweight, or that they don't have anorexia, when they clearly do. "Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as anorexia, is an eating disorder characterized by low body weight, a distortion of the perception of body image, and an obsessive fear of gaining weight. As previously mentioned, the diagnosis of anorexia often requires multiple approaches, one of which is provided by the BMI Calculator. Is that what people want? For everyone to quit on their dreams because they get too bullied to go five seconds without their weight being brought up? And what message does that send to viewers of these people? They see they people who they deem to be beautiful being harassed/bullied and that makes them feel even worse about themselves. And social media makes it so much worse. I hope that we as a society can move out of this mentality.

! tw // ed ! this video's a few months old, but i wanted to mention a few things. (rant warning lol) first, NONE of these are diets! these are glorified eating disorders, and it's heartbreaking to see so many young people being influenced by these unrealistic standards. second, iu mentioned she had an eating disorder around the time of her "diet", and she has struggled with bulimia in the past. honestly, this makes it so much worse that people were so eager to try it, because not only are they hurting themselves, but they're kind of glorifying eating disorders as well (all k-pop "diets" do). also, these diets are (obviously) really dangerous! i've struggled with eating disorders in the past, and i just overcame a particularly difficult bout of anorexia/bulimia a couple months ago. being a k-pop fan, seeing these extremely underweight idols fueled my disorder and made it severely worse. i used to think i was fat and ugly because idols that were my height were so underweight and they were praised for it. i thought i had to be underweight, too. i really hate how companies force their idols to be so incredibly underweight to make them feel "beautiful", and how idols are constantly shamed for their weight, even if they're average. even if companies won't stop starving their artists, i think they should at least stop broadcasting dangerous diets to the public. it influences so many young people (like myself), and eating disorders kill (but obviously they should also stop starving their artists). it's awful how the artists get praised for being underweight; for having a disorder. from experience, i know that eating disorders/starvation gives you this sick thrill, and you feel proud of yourself for having "self control", when it's really nothing to be proud of. i know these idols are exhausted, but they probably also have that awful mindset of "i did it", and they can never truly recover because of the extreme standards that are constantly being pushed on them. i also really hated that clip with momo (?), where she said she was worried she wouldn't wake up when she went to sleep. no one should have to go through that, but i think her members' responses were also really bad, commenting on "self control" and almost making it sound like something to be proud of. tl;dr i agree with everything said in this video lol sorry for writing an essay, but thank you for reading it ^^;

That’s pretty unhealthy for my height. I got down to 97 pounds at the height of my disorder + addiction to dr*gs, and everyone said I looked amazing, and so small 😔 I had an intense weight gain a couple years ago bc of PTSD and the meds I was put on that all caused me to gain weight rapidly. I got up to 185 pounds, but am back down to around 135-140 now. I still feel horrible about myself, bc of the standard I’ve placed on myself, but heavily influenced by being a kpop fan as a teenager and wanting to look like Yoona from Girl’s Generation 💔 I wish I’d never developed Bulimia and anorexia (at different times I’ve struggled with both) bc now I know what I CAN look like, and bc I’m still not the healthiest in my mind, I want to get back there. I’m trying to get better though, and eat when my tummy growls and I get pains and stuff, but it’s hard. I feel like I’ve “let myself go” when I even eat 2 bowls of soup and some crackers in a day 😢 I wish I could afford counseling, I think that would help.

this was a very informative & well structured video, good job! :) it honestly makes me upset what idols have to go through just for their job. and it's even more sad when it comes to underaged idols who are just teens and who are still developing (physically & mentally). for example, it's quite hypocritical that chaeryeong & ryujin had to diet in order to debut yet they gave itzy the "i love myself/i'm so different" concept ugh. chaeryeong once told on a vlive that her and ryujin used to eat secretly in a bathroom of the company until they got caught one day :(

idols get hated on if they weight "too much" but they also get hated if they are "too skinny" could people just like... not? also so many people assume that really skinny idols have eating disorders(??) which is like... ok if someone loses a lot of weight in a short amount of time i would be a little worried but,, you can't say someone has an ed based on their appearance. you can't know unless that idol opens up about it.

Tw/ ed When my ed was at its worst i was in high school. My diet was similar to these( not saying these idols hace eds ofc), the goal was obviously to eat as little as possible. I was very strategic about it, there were days when i only had 250-300 calories.( Which felt like a lot to me tbh. My goal was usually around 100-150 but it's hard to find snacks with that low calories). The thing is, it's so hard to keep that up when you have to go to school, study, walk home, basically when you have to function. I was also excersizing heavily, at times overdoing it. With all these activities i was feeling all dizzy and just pretty shit. I cannot even imagine having the schedule of an idol with this type of diet.

Being underweight can be dangerous, I had to be told I might die at age 18; no one should have to go through that. 2018 I was working out in class and after we finished I collapsed and passed out after P.E in school. I was taken to emergency where they said my lung had ruptured and I wasn't getting enough oxygen and that is was due to being underweight. I was hospitalized for the weekend but had to recover for 3 months at home missing school and not being able to dance which is something I enjoy. It took another 2 months after that before I was allowed to do normal stuff again. When I was allowed to start working out again my doctor recommended that I needed to gain 12 kilos to make sure it doesn't happen again. To other girls out there, please take care of yourselves. You can look as stunning as the idols being a healthy weight and working out.

Just an amend about BMI, asian BMI it's calculated differently a normal BMI. For an east asian a "normal BMI" can mean obesity since they have more visceral fat, so yes it's normal to them be asked to have lower weights, but not exactly super underweight like is expected from idols. Also it's common that companies release an false weight on the idols profile, usually one to five kilos under the original weight or that idols go on diets before being weighing so they be skinnier and then go back to their original and more healthy weight, some idols have a lot of muscle too, even some girls so even if they look thin, they hardly weight something like 45kg, especially the tall ones. One way of see if an idol it's ok on that side is look their muscle definition, since they workout and dance a lot, it's normal for them to have some muscles, especially on their legs. Jihyo and Joy are good examples of idols who are really healthy even when they look skinnier than before.

For me Jennie from Blackpink has a normal weight. Like she is 1.63 and 50 kg is normal. I'm 1.60 and I weight 50 kg. I eat pretty much everything I want and don't exercise. She probably can eat even more since she also dances and is more active.

Still, you have to see the amount of sports (mostly dance practice and flying yoga) she does. Her body fat percentage might be pretty low at athletes level, so she is actually slimmer than average. It's not good to have to little body fat either... Also for the height and weight thingy: I'm from Germany (so yeah different genetics) but all of my friends usually were at about 54-57kg at a height of 163cm. If you (@Melania Arce) are 50kg at 160cm than you are quiet lucky because your metabolism might be quiet high. I'm the same weight but 4cm taller and I was like the rare insect for being that weight...

@@raba9_7 Jennie has definitely more of a healthy weight She doesn't have much muscle tone (which isn't bad) so she most likely has an average body fat percentage. I have a pretty similar body to hers and usually a person with her height and weight would be considered perfectly healthy. For example I'm like 168 cm and weight around 51-52kg right now and I still don't look as skinny as most Idols and in terms of BMI and health checks I'm considering slightly underweight but healthy.

I remember when I got into kpop. I was about 10 years old and saw how skinny idols were, so I starved myself a lot… I’ve never really been “skinny” and I was ashamed of being a little chubby when I was younger. I also got bullied which let me to having an ED (I’m still recovering from it) Now that I’m older and grew up to like my body, I look back at myself thinking how ridiculous I was back then.. I really hate the beauty standards because they destroy us. Wanting to fit in or- what ever reason, it’s just stupid…

In regards to BMI, it says that Asians BMI healthy range is up 23. This isn't due to a body standard just Asian people need to be a big skinnier to be healthy This is due to genetics not beauty standards. Check the NHS website. That being said, yes they do take weight into extreme.

I would also like to point out about the negative image that is given when some female idols gain muscle. Though it is not very common it is still there, some female idols are called "too manly","weightlifters", or "very intimidating" due to their muscle gain. It breaks my heart every time a female idol is mocked instead of encouraged to show another part of her that is not just "feminine", "cute", or "sexy". I know there are other things that are mocked or discouraged as well but muscle gain is one of the things that I usually see spoken less about.

ok so here’s something that happened with me. I kinda got into bts last year, have only been a fan of taylor so I guess I am what kpop fans call a western stan but yeah anyways, so we’re talking about mid 2020 when dynamite came out. for the first 4 months that I spent slowly getting into their discography (yup im more of the music > artist person), it was pretty good but after that when I was keeping up with what they are doing or how they look, I didn’t realise how I was gradually starting to compare myself to them. I would look at their arms or collarbones and wonder why mine wouldn’t look how their’s did. also, quick reminder - I struggle with an eating disorder so that gradual process of comparison was somehow pushing me to start starving again. thankfully I realised what I was doing was awfully wrong, stepped back from engaging into that action and now just for the sake of myself I try my best to not get into kpop. the fact that this was with a group that I was told is allowed to have some kind of a control on their diet was truly concerning because I can’t imagine this very situation if it was one of these girl groups. I can’t help but hate how these toxic things can lead new casual listeners or gp to steer away from that whole genre or industry. idol or not, these are real people not a mannequin. they should be healthy, moreover they shouldn’t be restricted to take pleasure from food. sincerely hope this questionable view and criticism tones down and people stop hating women as well as men for having a normal healthy body.
