Ureter and kidney issues are VERY common in male cats because of the narrow width of their urethra - I'm so glad he's starting to do better. I'm sure you already do this/talked to your vet about it, but a wet food diet, especially a *prescription wet food* will help minimize crystal build up in urine if you haven't made the change yet. (Edit: Not a professional, but I have a cat who's experienced two urinary blockages. If Artemy starts to lick his gooch a bit *too* much, squish his lower stomach and check for any hardness. Catching blockages like this early could save his life going down the line if you choose not to get the surgery.) Edit 2: Surgery for urethral widening fixes one problem and adds another. Most vets advocate for not getting surgery in the last few years due to data showing the increased risk of kidney and bladder infection. Not getting the surgery IS the ideal option here, even if it means more due diligence with monitoring.

Yeah, Royal Canin Urinary SO (with vet prescription) is what I feed my dog (she just turned 13 years old) who has had bladder stones herself too (she had surgery to remove them when she was around 2 years old). I think Royal Canin makes cat food too.

Would like to add that perscription foods can be very bland and some cats/dogs don’t like them so doing either the wet food or mixing the dry food with warm water or if your vet approves, a broth, might make it more appealing.

@@ciani2396 Ideally, for cats, you shouldn't be feeding them dry food at all if you can afford it - hence why I said "prescription WET food." Dry food is a lot of the reason urine crystals are as bad of a problem as they are - most if not all hydration for cats comes from the food they eat. They don't have the same drive to drink water that dogs do and that makes it incredibly rough on their kidneys over time. Even if female cats don't have as many issues with blockages, kidney issues are very common in both sexes of cat. Males usually just reach blockage first or as a consequence of kidney issues. But! You are right that if you *must* use dry food, those are better ways to make it more palatable to your pet. From my personal experience with my cat, I'd say it is way too risky to use just dry prescription food - it's not enough to stop an eventual blockage. I'd even go as far as to say a good wet food does more than a dry prescription food.

I have a super old cat who was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease a couple years ago. The following year he got his annual bloodwork and he no longer had the markers for kidney disease. His kidneys completely recovered which his vet had never seen before. He is 21 years old and his name is Nosfurcatu

Genuinely glad to hear this! I have been lurking for a while because I appreciate your perspective. When I heard about the emergency vet visit it really hit home with me. My calico Trixie had an emergency visit 3 weeks ago. She lost a lot of weight in just a month despite eating plenty. Then 3 weeks ago she started having emergency diarrhea wherever she happened to be standing at the time. Turns out she had a bladder and bowl infection, and has seriously elevated thyroid function. She is doing better but not bouncing back like Artemy has. Hope he comes home soon, I know all to well how anxiety inducing it is when they are at the vet. They are not autonomous decorations you keep around the house, they are an extension of the family.

My big cat went through the same thing some years ago, and he had emergency surgery. His creatine was over 16 because he didn't pee for several days, and we didn't notice because we have 3 cats and the other 2 were using the cat sand. He nearly died.. I am so grateful he survived, and wish all the best to your little kittie.

just saying. you can have guinea pigs that leave a strong impression. I had such one out of the many that I had over a decade. he didn't just leave an impression on me, but on friends too, because this odd fluffball had not just no fear of humans, but was the type who came to you for a cuddle if you felt like shit. he was the only emotional support guinea pig I've ever seen. well, as in guinea pig. when I was a teen we had a bunny and that guy was my mom's soul bound animal you could say. he was so used to just getting carried around in her jacket, never even tried to run off when any of us approached and literally always b lined for my mom. it's rare, but you can have these odd cases amongst prey animals and the fact that they don't run and hide will teach you so much more about their personality. Dino, my guinea pig had this weird skill to just calm everyone down the moment he sat on their lap. well, at least until he pooped or tried to jump up, because he preferred to sit on my shoulder, like a parrot. that weirdo

Glad to hear he's gonna pull through. My cat had a similar problem earlier this year (also orange tabby). ITS SCARY. And they wanted to charge me 5 grand just to have them hold him overnight. Ironically, I just picked up my kitten from the emergency vet. My vet thought he had a intestinal blockage, but after the ultrasound it appears that he was already puked out whatever it was that bothered him and he's going to be 100% ok. But he's 9 months old, not an older cat like Artemy. It's really stressful to have a sick pet.

I genuinely can't believe it... Vaush had the exact same thing happen to his cat at the same time frame as mine (just a few days apart). Unfortunately my cat did not pee normally and I couldn't afford the surgery or the expected upfront fee, so I had to put my precious boy to sleep, I even had to bury him myself... I'm still recovering from it.

I've had a few cats in my life. I know how hard it is to have a deathly cat. One I had narrowly survived kidney stones like artemy. Which was thankful since we don't have the means to have the kind of surgery you could have done on him. He had a similar miraculous remission. So eager to see him back on the streams and do take your time. Remember the lessons from your trip to Europe, irl first !

Apparently boy cats are prone to having urinary problems. My big fat baby boy got the calcium crystals, he literally was fine one day and like two days later he was hiding in the basement, barely moving, wouldn't even come out for wet food. Luckily the emergency vet took care of him, got him all fixed up, and he had silly little shaved spots all over him. He's been doing great ever since, no more problems with that stuff (knock on wood). We need the ACA specifically for boy cats. I swear, every cat I've had has been female and we never had to take them to the vet ever except when they were literally dying (one cancer and the other when she was 18 years old) but this fat cat has to go like regular visits or he's dying like wtf just be healthy smh

My orange fluffy Yoda had real bad indigestion and blockage, and couldn't crap. Vommed bright yellow. Took him to emergency vet, and they needed to sedate him TWICE to get a proper diagnosis. So glad he pulled through that, and the mineral oil stopped a relapse.
