In Finland we have had something like 3-6minutes idle restriction for a years. What that has lead to ? Nowadays people start their car up and instantly go drive. Moisture gets to the glasses and they have to stop right after start to wait and run the engine so that the moisture goes away.. You can still wash your car here in you'r yard. But in certain degree.

As a retired physician who has time to think, a thought occurred to me. People get these medications that should not get into the groundwater or surface waters because they are very toxic to fish and even to people who do not need these medications. Also cosmetics and body care products have toxic components. So therefore people should not bathe or urinate or defecate because these toxins could get into the groundwater or rivers even if by way of the city drainage system. In contrast I can remember in the late 60s and early 70s when I lived in Germany the Rhein River could be different dye colors depending on what BASF was dumping in the river in Basel. The Rhein and other rivers were real cesspools and full of toxic drainage yet people still swam in their waters. Going from one extreme to the other? It is like here in the USA our town has recycling, yet the "recycled" materials end up in the same landfill as the rest of the trash. I also recall one cheap landlord I had. He did clean his car out of frugality with hardly any water. The car always looked shiny. Said he learned how to clean a car without water during the 3d Reich when he was chauffeur to some general. He also ran cold water through the heating pipes to earn more for allegedly heating the apartment without actually doing so. Heating costs were assessed by measuring how much water ran through the heating pipes not how much actual heat was delivered by that water. Did not tell me where he learned that. Fond memories of old Teutschland.

As a German I can tell you that as long as your neighbors are chill and don't make a big deal out of it, you should be able to quick wash your car. Yes it's not legal but there is a difference between washing your car with some dish soap and cleaning your enginebay with a pressure washer (that would be a real risk for the environment and nature) So you should be fine as long as you don't post any video or picture of doing it (sadly people on the internet are not so chill and might report it to the police if they see it)

One thing that you could do is get some quick detailer and use that to get any dust/dirt/debris off of your car after you get home from the car wash and then use the clay bar or wax after that. At least that way, the paint will be free of dirt and you won't do any damage putting wax on it. There are several really good liquid waxes as well. Not sure if you can get them in Germany, but Chemical Guys here in the States makes really good ones. It's not the end of the world, there's always ways around goofy laws. Good luck!

*According to my Bavarian-born Mom, the groundwater protection law that tripped you up has been in place at least since the 1960s. That is why nearly every Dorf has an auto Waschstraßen. The establishment of Grundwasserschutzgebieten, of which rural Bavaria has many, came into effect earlier than that. Should you ever travel up Bundesstraße 300 northeast of Augsburg you will encounter many signs warning of their existence. You will also pass the Tierkörperbeseitigung but that's another experience all to itself. Also sucks that InSinkErators, kitchen sink garbage disposals are forbidden. Prost!*

I also just learnt about this fun little fact after buying my first new(ish) car over here. My plan is to do at least a monthly deep clean at the Waschbox. I emailed the local operator and he said that hand washing isn't normally allowed but so long as I don`t do it during their busy times (and that I throw a few bucks in the machine for high pressure water and foam) it'll be okay. In between those trips I'll use a waterless wash (McGuires) and microfibre towels to maintain a decent shine.

That the outside carwashing is prohibited is based in the early 80’s, so no green agenda.. the soap or shampoo will release oil from the car and got into the ground, yes it is discussable.. we build a storage hall in 94 and it wasn’t allowed to let the rainwater go into the ground, all the 2000 sqm of the roof had to be drain into the waste-water.. so you see, they haven’t forgotten the rainwater.. I’d think it is everywhere in Europe the same law.. 😢

Environmental threats are real, no doubt. However, the fundamental problem is totally undermined in general discourse, which is that we have a consumer culture where people validate purchasing a new planned obsolescence shit car every two years. Keeping a 35 year old QUALITY car alive is the most environmentally sane thing one can do. Now i don't think german economists and policy makers are very found of that reality, purchase new electric cars instead but for gods sake don't clean them.

I ran into this when I did euro delivery with my Audi. Rained the first few days I was there and the car was filthy. Made it to the Nurburgring ring and found out about about the wash laws and I was not going to take a brand new Audi exclusive purple car through a automatic car wash. At the ring there was a guy in a van that was booked for people to take their cars too and he steam washed it, pretty much sprayed steam on it and wiped the dirt off. Then after driving to stockholm and back to Germany to drop off for shipment, I had to make sure the car was clean, and it was hell finding someone to wash it. Eventually found a detail place and they had it done in a hour or so. But yea not the easiest thing.

Options: Just do it until the Bundespolizei pitch up, then plead ignorance, apologise and say you will never do it again - or - talk to your neighbours and gauge their opinions to you doing it - or - do it at night, very quietly - either way don’t whinge or mention the war.

Now I feel bad because I didn't write about it in the last video I thought you were aware I live and was born in germany, im sure lots of things are weird if you move here that are completly normaö growing up here I bet you've noticed that the TÜV is also much more stict then in the UK (not only about oil leaks but on everything) You have to get speacial permission to put other wheels on your car It's all possible and alright to do it's just a bit more strict and controling So if you want to do something completly wild on your car (like an engine swap) you can do that but you need a "Einzelzulassung" so everything gets checkt if it works correctly and is still road safe. All possible but helps if you have a friend working at a Zulassungsstelle I know somebody but I live in NRW so quite a bit away

Thanks, yes I have some prior experience with the TÜV there are a few videos on the channel, got another TÜV coming up soon, but hopefully they're nice and chill, most people seem to be here in Bayern!

Yes, officially it is illegal, but it really depends where you live. Ask your neighbours about this issue. Maybe nobody cares. I also live on the country side and nobody gives a shit about washing the car or even wash the tractor. In the cities it is another question. You might get fined quite fast. But really, just ask some people around and it might be easier than thought.

Sorry to hear this man. At first I thought you were joking that's absolutely nuts. I bet they don't like dirty cars either. I'm surprised they allow you to put screen wash in your car, or does it have to be pre-filtered spring water. 💦👍
