The roof it’s easy to do , ripped of and seal / weld or do whatever it takes to cover the holes and just buy the skin … The roof skin just gets glued on … you will have to remove the windows trim to tuck the material in .. As for the headliner it’s the same process as the Chevelle or if it gets folded with the belt line strip in the inside it would be the way headliners are done on 60’s mustangs .. cake work man .. don’t pay no $3000 that’s crazy

Vinyl roofs are an on and off thing. My dad use to own an Australian 1974 LTD in Monza Green, so was the Vinyl roof and it was a pretty boss car. Curvy and mean looking (unlike the US Fords of the time) Eventually, the vinyl needed replacing and he took it to a "professional" needless to say, when my dad picked it up, he was not happy as the dude who replaced it put a Cream roof on top when my dad wanted it stock and he just could no longer stand to drive it any more and soon sold it. It was one of his biggest regrets ever and when we got the call from the auto wreckers a year or two later the car was there, he went to go pick it back up, but they had sold off the original engine by then and broke his heart even more.

Many years ago I owned a 1974 Torino Elite. When I bought it, it was about 5 years old and the roof had rusted so badly that it was opening gaps in the vinyl. I drove that car for years and loved it. Baby T-Bird.

I love that car. My sister won a pagent in 1974 and the local ford dealership gave her a loaded baby blue one for the year. Boy that car was great on the hiway. Couldn't even feel the steering. It's worth keeping.

We had a 76 version of this many years ago. Ours was green with a half vinyl top. It had a 351 m and it blew a rod and we put a reman. in it and drove it a few more years. Ours had tilt wheel and we had it a couple years before we figured out the turn signal worked the tilt wheel. Keep up the fun Scott

Chris I have painted entire cars with that Raptor Liner and it seems to hold up VERY well to UV rays and it protects the body fairly well. It's subject to pebble chips and whatnot as with any other paint, but not as bad as regular urethane. The key to it adhering properly is good prep work, and I'm sure they did just that beforehand. It looks night and day from before.

Since you are asking about the sap from pine trees and what not, I would like to contribute a tip that I have used on that very same problem. In Florida, there are many sap trees, pine trees. The tip is to purchase a can of that keyboard can of compressed air at Walmart. Turn the can upside down and the fluid that comes out will be very cold. Go to a sap droppings and apply the fluid to each one for about 2 sec. What that does is freezes the sap to a low temp that makes the sap become very brittle. Now get one of those plastic spreaders used on the body fillers bondo and scrap the now frozen sap off the paint finish. The sap will come off as chips in brittle slices. Try to keep from getting very cold fluid on the paint. Most of those cans have a short tube to direct the spray right on. You could get frostbite from that fluid coming out so give some caution there.

I grew up in a berm home that sits 3/4 below ground level. My sisters ford granada parked up top on the driveway jumped out of gear one day after driving us home from school and almost ran me over as i walked towards the house. Sis screamed I jumped out the way and we both lived to laugh about it now. The car slammed into a sidewalk down below and took a small chunk out of it. The car barely had damage at all, bumper was a little crooked and the lower fender slightly bent. Dad fixed it with a chain and tree of course.

I've done so many of these it's scary. At least 3/4 of my 44 Gran Torinos had the stupid vinyl top on it. None of my roofs had holes in them but some had some bad scale rust. What I did with the scale rust is sand down the roof really well. Blow it off very well, treat the whole roof with a rust stopper. Then I pour a whole can of POR (paint over rust) on the roof and brush the whole roof. After 24 hours and it is dry I sand the roof with a mild 100 grit to take the shine off. You will see lots of shiny craters on the roof telling you where the low spots are, very handy...then, Use an ultra fine two part finishing putty where the craters are and board sand and guide coat a few times. The whole roof will be sealed with the POR which is a plastic paint. No water will ever get in again and the stuff is 1,000 times stronger than normal paint. As for the sap on the paint, Wax and grease remover from your local auto paint store with remove them with ease and if it doesn't come right off, it will make it so soft it will wipe off. The window trim is held on from the outside with clips, the drip rail snaps on. An interesting story about the vinyl tops. Some torinos were meant to have them, some when they were being inspected down the assembly line, if a flaw or two was on a car that was not supposed to have a vinyl top, they would mark the car and it would receive a vinyl top to hide the flaws and down the line it would go. Love your videos buddy.

Rubbing alcohol is definitely the best option for dissolving fresh sap, or dried sap that still has pliability to it. But any sap that has been baked on (possibly for years) and completely dried out can really only be chipped or scraped off like you were doing. I own a 1974 Mercury Comet with a vinyl top, and large pine trees over my driveway - I feel your struggle!

Put in A/C, defrosts better, all mechanical normal. A stereo with Bkuetooth but looks old. Then. Maybe dual exhaust, a 4 barrel intake and a Sniper. Just like VGG says: it's your going to town car. Love it! Always liked these Ford's from the bleak malaise era. They were more reliable..IMO...lol than some of the late 60's and early seventies. Electronic ignitions worked wonders for making them run reliably, but the cars just did not have the performance of the 60's cars. And better rust prevention helped save more of them. I'm super duper glad you kept this elite. I subbed when you got it in hopes you'd keep it and make more videos. I've been collecting elites for 20 years, and have 15 of them myself. Yes, they do like to pop into reverse from park randomly. You DEFINITELY should replace the steering components asap too, the car is very front heavy and they wear fast. Get new strut rod bushings while you're at it and sand and rust proof paint the rods while you're down there too. Trust me. The light sockets were ubiquitous on nearly all ford's at the time so they are easy to find and replace and give a lot more cred that a hillbilly screw ;). Give this car the love, time, and money she needs and it will be with you for life. They are nearly indestructible, even the rusted out ones. I'm hoping you DO put that headliner and hat tray back in though, she deserves it.

@@tryduck5571 bondo also sucks moisture, so it makes the rust worse. fibre glass takes more work to smooth but is strong, and waterproof. where there is a hole, a mesh and a few layers of fibreglass will be stronger than the steel it replaces. and given the area, fibreglass isn't affected by salt nearly as much. if i lived there, i think i would be spray foaming every little nook and cranny, and bedliner sprayed over the bottom third of the car.

I'd definitely put some of that heavy mat on the roof, otherwise it might resonate something fierce, though the bed liner helps with that too. Makes sense not to insulate the front though. Maybe some flocking to make it look nice?

If you blow those out and use a heat gun on low, then clean and heat gun dry it again. There's a spray can you can buy thats a rubber spray. It works well, flex seal is a brand name but I think 3m has one too. Its like the rubber on the 1990 ford ecm/computer.

I had a 64 Elcomino with the white bedliner top. I kept it until the late 70's and it was still shinny and bright.

Super satisfying to see it cleaned up. Huge fan of just making something nicer looking quickly and cheaply vs total restoration ala Derick with Vice Grip.

I was given a 72 Pontiac some years ago that was sitting under a tree for many years. Sap for days. I scraped it off over many weeks with a bondo scraper and brought it back. Elbow grease.

That "jumping out of park" issue may not affect your car, since the key is in the steering column. If there is a key/shifter interlock (i.e. the shifter is locked in park if the key is off), you have nothing to worry about. That problem only impacted cars without the interlock, and those usually had the ignition switch in the dash. My grandfather had a 75 F100 that had that weak detent problem (had the key-in-dash setup), and the detent spring was so incredibly light, it was almost imperceptible when you shifted between shifter positions. And you didn't need to pull back on the shifter to get it out of park... really obvious that it could slip out of park on its own. Also, most of those affected vehicles had stickers put on the dash warning drivers of that problem (somehow Ford got out of issuing a recall by sending out those stickers to owners). If yours doesn't have those stickers, it's more evidence that it isn't affected.

3k for a top isn't bad but when he said, "nah fill the hole with bondo".... I would've walked away. Shame people still do shitty work like that. I would weld it and patch it.

My 1974 LTD looked almost like that under the vinyl when we peeled it in 1984. It wasn't worth anything except as a running beater, so I sanded off the loose rust and covered the pinholes with fiberglass. I never got around to it, but I was planning to paint the roof with hammertone spray paint. I got almost three years and another 30,000 miles out of it before I scrapped it.

The greatest caulk I've ever used it solar seal 900. Available in 200 colors, paintable, lasts almost forever and sticks to everything. It will stick to wax paper. It's stronger than wood once it sets up fully.

My 70 Thunderbird (150 bucks in January 1981) had rot in all the usual places but the vinyl roof was perfect. We just pretended we didn't see the rust. Typical for cars living in New England. Perfect mist green paint still shined, perfect black vinyl interior. I still miss that car 40 years later.

I Have same roof problems on my 67 Pontiac Lemanns ,Man that rhino lining on the top is right on time and got me thinking of doing instead of putting a new roof skin on ,I bought all new interior and was ready to put it all in and found a puddle of water on floorboard ,so glad I decided to take the vinyl off
