You know it’s sexism when your villain origin story is aging. It’s so dumb how female antagonists revolve around their desire to look young, not even “be young” because of health or something, it’s literally only for the looks. And as these stories condemn women for clinging onto their youth, they also judge the fact that they’re old. Like what are we supposed to do then??

The intersection aspect is a really big point you brought up. POCs tend to be adultified and as a result, are rarely depicted as innocent, soft or vulnerable. Like Tiana is 19 and grinding her butt off like she's in her 20s and then the solution to her overworking herself is.... to get married. Meanwhile white characters get to pick their own path and be seen for who they are at that moment in their lives. 😕

20s being their prime my ass! I’m in my 20s and I can’t stand society saying that a girl is no longer attractive after 30. They make it sound like 30 is old when it’s not; it’s young age. Ever since 7th grade I have had a thing for older women. I had a crush on Gwenyth Paltrow back in 7th grade and still do now. There is this 40 year old girl at my job that I got close to; we made out in the parking lot once. She’s older than me and I don’t care. She’s 40 and she is beautiful!

Agreed. Just like with Nicki Minaj. People were age-shaming her for being 40 which backfired on them. Nicki Minaj looks beautiful as a 40 year old. She still looks the same as she was more than a decade ago. She aged but aged gracefully like wine. 🦄👑🌸💖💜❤

duuuude i've noticed this problem with studios forgetting how old their characters are. From my experience, it does mostly happen with girl characters, but there's a fair amount of boys on the list as well. and when teenage characters DO act like teenagers, people tend to call them annoying. also to answer your question about Vanellope, she abandoned her role as princess for the role of president in the first movie, but the second movie seems to forget about that?? If they intended on just keeping her as a princess the whole time then yea it would make sense to include her in princess marketing

12:50 when I was younger I seriously thought that these Disney princesses was in their early to mid twenties, unless their age was specifically mentioned (such as Anna/Elsa, Rapunzel, Ariel, Moana, and maybe one or two more). And yeah, it was mainly because of their behaviour and mannerisms and outfits

Hearing you talk about how the Disney princesses were adultified despite being teens, and how people though Mabel was annoying because she ACTED HER AGE reminds me of that bitch who called Lilo an abusive brat. Lilo. Is. Six. And she's dealing with the loss of her parents and the fact that her sister is now taking on the role of a parent. You know, massive changes? Changes that make kids her age act out more? She is, in fact, one of the most well-written kids ever animated. And some people speculated that she's on the autism spectrum. But no, apparently she's a brat for being written as traumatized and lonely.

I wasted my teen years on dating apps because I wanted a boyfriend so bad since my step aunt had boyfriends before. As a gay guy, I just wanted to experience that, but other guys just weren't interested in me. I used to get picked on for my physical appearance throughout elementary to high school. When I used to be on instagram back in 2016 (I was 20 during that time), I would get trolled on there. I had a gay couple all in my DM telling me how ugly & fat I was. Then they were sending me pictures of gay guys that looked conventionally attractive and were telling me how much more cuter they are than me. I remember people would comment on my pictures saying eww or gross. This world is just cruel ass hell to you if people don't like your physical appearance. It's crazy how people feel like that's an excuse to be rude to you. It's like you stop being a human to them all of a sudden. It's weird. I'm at a point in my life where idc about my looks anymore.

Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a first Disney prince focused movie?! Cause like for the princesses they focus the formula of falling into some kind of societal gender injustice that causes the to become a princess by meeting a prince. Would a prince focused movie do the same? Or would it just be a story driven movie instead? Ageism as this video talks about would also may not be a problem for the prince as he might be older to make him be perceived as wiser compared to a woman/girl it’s not about mental but physical of being undesirable.

I love Sleeping Beauty, but the beginning where the prince looks in the cradle at Aurora... and she's 16 at the oldest in the film. I think it's real odd how a lot of these stories aren't about adults but their parental figures, guardians, other adults that should be there aren't. Excuse after excuse for why they can't have a strong sense of community (and for all the antisemitism too). I think plenty of younger people (and some older people too) internalize a lack of healthy platonic and familial relationships with others as normal. Same thing with body standards and the disillusion with what younger kids and teens are actually like. And it tracks with social expectations regarding race too; i.e. Tiana and Pocahontas being conventionally attractive and doing the work to serve as a bridge of understanding between different cultures. How tiring.

I think it's just cause Disney Princess movies are meant to be escapist fantasies for very young children, whose fantasies don't involve parents being around usually. Also what's this about the anti-Semitism of the Cinderella stepfamily? I see it for the witch characters but why the step sisters?

My experience with sexism and ageism on media is really weird for a young person. When I was a kid my favourite Disney channel princess-related movie was Cinderella... But it was in part because I related to the step sisters with their big noses and huge feet, I could see myself in them (even though they weren't portrayed on a dignifying light). The sequel always stood out for me, as the step sister got to have her happy ending in despite of her being considered ugly by the majority of the society. That warmed my heart as a kid, but now I see that her "happy ending" was still rooted in being chosen by a man. These movies give the message that being desired is the only way of being worthy and that your attractiveness is what makes you lovable. Also, the baby faces and the smooth skin of all this princesses make me feel older than I actually am and that's alarming (I'm 19 years old). You could find me feeling sorry for Pearl during X. Because, she is just a woman who yearns for being wanted, but society gave her the cold shoulder and punished her for not "being pretty" under their standards. Women don't owe pretty to anyone. We are lovable because we exist, not because we are hot.

I recently discovered the webcomic The Glass Scientists. It starts off as a queer retelling of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde mixed with Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Moreau. But in the later chapters, I was surprised to see issues of racism and colorism be brought up. And this takes place in a gaslamp fantasy world a la 19th century London. There is also the fact Jekyll/Hyde are bisexual and in love with Lanyon, who is biracial and gay. The creator actually worked on some of the Disney cartoons like Gravity Fals and Star vs the Forces of Evil. I am a white guy, but I think the comic does a decent job on some of these issues. It's still ongoing, but what I saw so far was fairly good in ny opinion. If you're curious, I do recommend it.

I am painfully cis-(woman)-heteronormative-passing but even at a young age, I never saw myself as a Disney Princess. Everything they embodied, the grace, the poise, the elegance, the daintiness, the soft and feminine presentation - these things were never me or what I could have hoped to be. I always saw myself as Ursula, not that that there's anything wrong with that.

I think for most of the princesses whose movies take place in the distant past, it makes sense that they would have all that responsibility because kids were expected to grow up faster and marry younger back then. That being said, some of their ages don’t make sense… like why did Snow White and Tiana have to be as young as they were?

Great video. I hate Disney/fairytales ageism stuff. I understand it was probably a different time and trying to set girls on beauty standards, but it’s the 2020s, it’s time let teenagers to be teenagers. I doubt they’ll ever do it, but a good subversion is to have a princess trying to meet the standards but realize it’s not right and that deserve to be a teenager. You made good points about Tina and POC princesses. I hope we hear more about the Tina series because it’s years and all we’ve heard is the latest live action movie. Speaking of it, I’m sorry for being off topic, I know you said that Nani’s live actress being non Native Hawai’ian? I know some people are upset and feels like whitewashing given how Disney is willing to back pedal after the Little Mermaid reaction. To me, those who give diversity are the animators, directors and writers. The executives are always willing to back pedal if it causes them problems. Nani in the original movie looked beautiful and it’s disappointing to see them change that. Thank you for another amazing.

I had a pretty negative view of Disney princesses in the early 90s. Sleeping Beauty had the personality of a stuffed animal & no agency whatsoever, Cinderella could have married literally any commoner at any time to get away from her family but held out for the richest guy in town, Ariel, a teenager, abandoned her home & family for a gamble at a romance with a total stranger whom was an adult, Snow White was insipid, bland, & forgettable. I guess Jasmine, Bell, Pocahontas, & Mulan were the only good role models.

While you talked about how younger women/girls are casted on contrary to older crew members, I got the thought that their younger age also almost automatically puts the actor in a 'lower rank' than the crew and especially the director. This lower rank would thus allow older people (especially men over younger women) to have control over what the younger actor will do in a scene and how they're treated on set Of course, I have nothing to back this up as I don't have much knowledge of famous or commonly known actors and actresses that have said they were treated poorly on set, but ageism is still a big element in our current society so I wouldn't be surprised if this is partially true
