Sailing Soulianis

Sailing Soulianis

Күн бұрын

This is our third time launching the boat after spending time on the hard. We’ve figured out the routine, for the most part, and each time has been easier than the last. But with so many moving parts, literally and figuratively, it seems like there’s always a new surprise or challenge.
During our first haul out, we rebuilt our feathering prop and put it back together with the wrong pitch, leaving us without any propulsion, in forward or reverse. The second year we scrambled to reinstall our 300 lb. centerboard at 6AM, and this year it was managing to do everything while caring for our baby during covid.
It all went fairly smoothly, and we even decided to throw in a few last-minute projects! We got a crispy new mainsail from Precision Sails which required a bit more rigging work to install than we anticipated. Kirk also tackled a plumbing project - one of his least favorite duties - to fix a leak in our freshwater system that had been causing us grief for years.
As with most things sailing related, even ordinary tasks can quickly require extra-ordinary effort, but as long as you’ve got the right attitude, it’s this extra bit of excitement in the daily routine that makes sailing such an enjoyable lifestyle.
Much love,
Lauren, Kirk & Renata

I hope you find the boat like Project Atticus did….The boat manufacturer is in North Carolina where they are now….installing a new bow railing that holds two large solar panels and their communication gear. I forgot the name of it….like New England but not that…..has a birth by the stairs and shower…40’ which is 12 meter….if you go big….I hope you can find a 48’. They paid $205,000 and had some strange fixes to do which did not cost much…almost like somebody played pranks on the previous owner.

I noticed you was having some issues with the black slime that grows in diesel fuel. At a business I formally worked at before retiring I purchased a fuel polisher system that ran off 12vdc and it worked very well. It was small but could handle a lot of fuel very quickly. The unit was made by Algae-x and I would highly recommend their products. The replacement filters are a little expensive compared to an automotive oil filter but if something works well a few extra pennies is well worth it. The Algae-x unit can be mounted permanently connected to the fuel tank so you can turn it on from time to time and polish your fuel any time you feel the need to keep your fuel in tip top condition.

just watched Ep 88 again. Love your videos. Unfortunately, tightening the backstay does not lean the mast aft without lengthening the forestay. it compresses the mast and causes mast bend forward. Remember mainsail flatening . Mast rake has to be set up when stepping the mast. The center of the mast may also be pulled forward using a baby stay.
@artsmith103
@artsmith103 2 жыл бұрын
Racers have high ratio adjustable backstays. More bend is put in the top of the mast. The top of the mast bends aft and down following the arc of the forestay. It does depower the main. Like a mini reaf. In big wind racing, tighten backstay upwind, release down wind.
@michaelmerrithew4042
@michaelmerrithew4042 2 жыл бұрын
@@artsmith103 On a masthead rig the masthead can not move fore and aft without lengthening the forestay, which is not done. With more backstay pressure, the rig tries to compress, bending the mast forward in middle sections, flattening the main. Therefore, the mast does not "rake" foreward and aft.
@artsmith103
@artsmith103 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmerrithew4042 That's what I said. If the mid section bends forward, the top bends aft and down. Main is flattened, depowering like a mini reaf.

re other comments this may be a useless comment.... many sailing channels remove ALL labels and cardboard from ALL food to prevent latent bugs from suddenly appearing. Apparently "bugs" can lie unseen and asleep and "come out" and ruin food of all sorts. These boaters use a thick marking pen and mark cans.... and put stuff like cereal and flour etc into sealable plastic containers.... not glass of course.

Only problem is that I just turned 64 and could never ride my younger brother's regular skateboard. I never put an effort into it either back then, many moons ago. I've had visions of my lab pulling me around and I think that would be pretty cool. She's going to have to heal from her surgery next week, torn acl. Every time I see people carrying their baby in that front strap I think of the movie Total Recall when Arnold meets the mutant. As far as your fuel tank, try pulling off the very bottom a quart or two. Also there is gunk stuck to the sides of the tank so polishing will be in your future for a time. I ended up removing our tank and pressure washing it clean.

I wanted to add that I've been a diesel mechanic most of my life and can pass along a few helpful tips. Clean fuel is very important to a diesel engine, or any engine as far as that goes, but dirty fuel or fuel with moisture can really damage a diesel engine. I would highly recommend purchasing a tube of water detection paste to test your fuel tank with especially after refueling and having a fuel polishing system on board.
