I hope this helps someone. I am 50. Throughout my life, I practised guitar always trying to get 'better and better'. A few weeks ago, My daughter was singing "Flowers" by Mylie Cyrus. I joined in playing guitar. It was the most fun I have ever had playing guitar. I suddenly realised something: The fun of playing the instrument is not in the 'constant trying to get better and better'. Sometimes you just have to enjoy playing for the pure joy - with your family, by the campfire, at the beach... it's in the music, not in the stress of excellence.

To add to your point : like many guitarists I began playing around other people at friends houses, during night outs, etc, and being the fucking cringey ass edgelord I was, I was only playing stuff that I enjoyed, or the same fucking metallica riffs or solos or whatever, while feeling like "people d'ont appreciate what I do", and that despicable mindset fueled by disdain for folks when they would say "hey, you play guitar ? can you play wonderwall ???" and me rolling my eyes. Now, let's be honest, these people were not really respectful to consider me their personal jukebox ... however, if I'm also honest with myself I was too egocentric to realize that if I want people to connect with me, I also need to take a step into their direction. Years later, after learning blues, funk, jazz ... I began to play and learn a lot of pop and folk tunes, making nice arrangement of hit songs on the acoustic. There is always a way to work on it in a new and fresh way, think about Jacob Collier's versions of Stevie Wonder or MJ tunes ! I realized also that most of the times, me being "yeah this music is too easy or crap, I get bored" is me being lazy af and being close minded about it. Play open chords ? Do the barre chords instead ? Play the barre chords ? Play some closed voicings inversions, or maybe more spread voicings, maybe some reharm ... Tired of chords ? Why not do an appropriate and responsible voice leading here and there ? Maybe some 3rds or 6ths in double stops instead of the full chords ? You play it in folk ? Twist it in Reggae, Polka or Funk or whatever else. There is ALWAYS another way that will enhance the fun if you actually try. My belief is that unless you're an actual genius, you can't be bored naturally : you're choosing to be bored because you harbor some negative considerations towards the piece you're currently playing, which means you're emotionnally disconnecting yourself from it, making it "not worth it". Which is bad considering it's most likely gonna be a big part of professional repertoire IRL. Anyway, after switching eagerly and voluntarily to pop tunes, suddenly, I wasn't the annoying dude playing guitar in my corner, I was the dude proposing songs that I liked and that I knew everyone would love to acoustic karaoke ! I've had since countless impromptu jams or karaokes with friends or acquointances playing a cool version of toxic or having fun singing some beatles, ariana grande, or smash mouth or whatever funny and goofy shit that people LOVE to sing ! Of course you have to read the room and surround yourself with folks that like this kind of stuff, but if you do, man all those hours of hard work will definitely pay off ! Another big thing is being able to quickly read chords so that if someone asks a song you don't know, you can just look it up and play it instantly. Fucking rad too.

I think most of the problems are related to time, but not in the sense of "aging". Mostly because at some point in life you have to manage your income to sustain yourself alone, or if you have kids you had to dedicate a lot of time and money to them and stuffs like that. Also you don't have a lot of time to giggling around on clubs or the patience to know musicians that are truly dedicated and serious about musical projects. Another problem is their time too, unless you play with teens, which is unlikely to happen....summing it up. It's not impossible, but the odds are a bit unfavorable. Also, i don't know about your country, but where I am (italy) there is not a real market for musicians to flourish anymore...expecially live. No one is willing to hire an artist or a band and pay them, with very few exceptions on the very big cities....it's not a joke these days. I wish i could be a full time musician for example, and i think i'm a good level for that, but still i have to attend a normal job to sustain myself or it would be impossible

I started teaching myself guitar in the 90s when I was 13 years old. I learned basic chords and played early 90s ballads along with songs by early Seattle-based bands. Then, I discovered Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai in an old music bar. By that time, I already knew basic blues and how to read guitar tablatures for songs and advanced techniques. I couldn’t play like them, but by the age of 17, I had developed my own style because I didn’t want to be a clone of anybody, I wanted to be myself. Unfortunately, I became frustrated with my music career when I was 21 years old (my country’s musical tastes were terrible during that time). I sold all of my gear and switched to the IT industry, making a living as an IT professional. Still, I played guitar occasionally. Then, tragedy struck. I suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke that I survived, but it left my left limb and my fretting hand paralyzed. Over time, I regained some movement, but I lost the ability to fully play the guitar I loved so much. So, what happened next? In Christmas of 2019, my wife gifted me a Strat. I picked it up and started relearning guitar as if I were 13 years old again. I was 41 at the time, and guess what? I can now play some Paul Gilbert songs from Mr. Big (since PG is considered the beginner standard in this era), including the guitar solos. If you’re 30, it’s never too late. Trust me, man

Pat Martino (one of the greatest guitarists of all time IMO) was 36 when he suffered a hemorrhaged arteriovenous malformation. As a result, he forgot everything about the guitar, and forgot he even played it, let alone that he was a revered virtuoso. After his brain surgery where part of his brain was removed, he started relearning how to play guitar from scratch, even transcribing his old solos, and emerged better than ever. Essentially, he became one of the greatest guitarists in history twice in one lifetime. If that's the case, it's entirely possible to become an excellent guitarist just once later in life for us mere mortals.

Just want to say for anyone else out there thinking about starting, I'm in my 40s, picked up guitar last November, and I'm absolutely head over heels in love with playing guitar. I play and practice every single day because I love it, I love holding a guitar, I love feeling the strings, I love clean, crunch, and crazily distorted tones. I've been sick, I've been hurt, I've had surgery and I still have played every single day for 11 months. I don't care if I'm good or great, I can play songs I love like Man in The Box, Nutshell, Mayonnaise, Cherub Rock, Wish You Were Here, My Own Summer, Outshined, Pure Imagination, stuff I NEVER thought would be possible in less time than I thought it'd take. Guitar never feels like a chore, it never feels like work, even when I can't get my hands to do what I want them to, it's never frustrating, it's just more things to do and learn and more time I get to invest playing. I cannot express how much learning guitar has done for my emotional well being, I understand it won't be for everyone, I understand not everyone will have the same passion or obsession, but I would recommend learning music, whatever the instrument to anyone of any age. I have never loved any thing (persons excluded) more than I love playing guitar and I would wish that same love to anyone else. Oh and this channel has been an AMAZING resource for understanding how to improve technique and understanding core concepts. This channel is the only one where that got me comfortable holding a pick. A million thanks you Bernth 🫶

You are never too old and you can always improve by practice and effort. I think Bernth is right about timing though, that's everything. Alot of self taught bedroom guitarists miss this, but it's critical. When I went back to guitar many years ago I had to go to first principles again, literally playing the simplest things, but to a metronome. Massive improvement though, with time.

I'm 34, I had a rough life growing up. always wanted to play guitar, had a cheap chinese acoustic guitar when I was 21 despite everything I learned how to play on my own from youtube. then life happened and stopped playing guitar at about 24 years old, had to take care of things, then I got an ok yamaha acoustic guitar at 28, but I felt like I had lost my touch, fingers got soft and lost my callus, didn't feel like playing. now at 34 I'm doing a bit better in life, I got an ibanez electric guitar and a line6 helix, and started learning to play all over again because it's the one thing that I've always wanted, all I do is go to work and go home to practice guitar. moral of the story is that it's you who decides if it's too late for you. you decide if you wanna keep on going or not. Started guitar when I was 29. I've played bass guitar since I was 22 like in an on off relationship. I've played a bit in country and rock bands and it was okay. I've picked up the Cajon at 27 and I already had the rythm. I started singing in my early 30s. To be honest, I miss the discipline to just focus on the guitar. But spending hours and hours and hours and even more hours really helps to get better. Spending time with your instrument will help you progress. If you want to become really good, you will need support, or spend even more time with your instrument. Learning new patterns over and over again. Starting in a young age definitly helps, but it's possible to learn new tricks, even if your over 30 or 40 or 50...

Age isn't a limiting factor when learning. A 15 year old with a blank slate on the guitar and 12 free hours per day is obviously going to learn faster than a 30 year old who either built up bad habbits or overthinks things and has to work 10+ hours per day. I've been playing since I was 15 and got really good really fast (I had time to practice over 8 hours per day). I hung the guitar up for 3ish years when I was 18, picked it back up around 22 and felt pretty much platued until a little over a year ago (31 years old). I feel I have made almost the same amount of gains this past year as I did when I was a teenager because I decided to approach practice in a critical way, actually paying attention to little things like pick slanting, dedicating an hour of my day strictly to drills to improve my alternate picking. I'm not where I want to be yet, but I'm playing things I've never been able to play before because I'm delibritely practicing specific techniques consistenly. I know I'm not THAT old, but I refuse to let age determine my success in something. TL; DR - Practice

Shout out to emphasizing how important timing is. I've been playing guitar for close to 20 years and while my technical skills are vastly overdeveloped, my timing is almost worse than a beginner. That's partially due to the physical limitations of my body, but bad timing is definitely something that will always make you sound like a beginner, no matter what your skill level is and that's where I'm spending the most time now.

The only limit is kids naturally have no idea "I can't do it", so just apply until they are able to finish the exercise. As adults we have that voice saying "you can't do that, your fingers are not normal, you can't do it" that makes things harder on us. But if you know that, and do constant exercise, never give up and understand the difficulty is key part of the process of learning, you can be the guitarist you have in mind in say, 8-9 months. Trust me, I am 42 and as I can't speed up my fingers on final coundown solo I gave up guitar and started flute instead. It's just too fast, I can't do it, my fingers must have something wrong. Flute is easier.

Which of these courses are best for an old person that likes hard rock and metal.

@BERNTHGuitarAcademy My question is: how do you know when to do triplets or eighth notes when soloing I’ve never really paid attention to that and I would guess that this is why my solos sound so bland and don’t really go anywhere

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, and he will tell you that. With Bernth Channels get what you need, when you need it. Doesnt have to be 10 hours a day, but You MUST spend time, once or mulitple times each day. I practice 10 minutes 5 times a day w 20 mins at night. We ALL have 5 and 10 mins. Thanks Bernth!!

The only reason this video showed up in my recs is cause I've turned 30 and am looking to get a guitar+amp for Christmas lol. I think I'm finally getting over some of my ADHD to where I can finally start learning. If anything, it's finally the right time .

I don't really understand how to make this exercise work, I think 🤔 Do I need to write some specific drums to make this work? I mean I have guitar pro, so I could make it work easily, but I don't really know how. Also my rhythm is probably one of the things I should work on the most in my musicality, so I'd love to learn more about this

I’m 36, been playing for 22 years, and I say: if you play guitar as often as you breathe, guitar will be like breathing. And if you play guitar as often as you don’t breathe, guitar will be like suffocating. It’s not about the years, it’s about doing it every day with consistency. If you play for 25 years and hardly ever practice, you’ll still sound like a beginner. But if you play for five years every day for 15, 30, 45 minutes or so- you’ll sound like a virtuoso.

As an older guy I’d like to point out the pitfalls we tend to get caught up in. If you want to go on tour, being a virtuoso is actually a bad thing. Listen to top 40, and tell me where you hear a shredder. Nobody goes home, and puts on a shredder album. If it’s your passion, you should work toward that. But otherwise the guitar player tends to be the composer for the band. Serve the songs, and stop trying to impress. Nobody cares. Find ways to make it not just another rock song. Be different, not faster.

I would suggest you before playing anything, learn how to hold the guitar, how to hold the pick, how to pick correctly, how to fret properly, fretting hand form and so on. Just the very very basic things, that's what I did, it'll only take you very little if you pay attention and from there on everything will fall in place.

Funny enough I think many Bernth's followers are 30, 40+ just like me so I'm glad he debunks it ;) Usually there is the need in us to get rid off bad habits we would learn throughout the years, and Bernth is teaching people how to do it. Also he has this perfect balance of fun and mature attitudes towards music which appeals to older audience even though he drill freaking holes in guitars xD

If you're reading this thinking that your own troubles are insurmountable: I'm 31 and realized recently that I'm a lefty guitar player. I've been playing right handed guitars for 18 years as a hobby. It first clicked for me when trying to play a lefty guitar. If I'm fine, you'll be fine. I can play some chords left handed, and I'm playing them better than I ever could play megalovania right-handed, or several songs from mega man. Go, enjoy your life, do what you want and prosper. Life is too short to worry about missed opportunities. Seize them instead.

I think, why you have to be a great guitarrist, you have to enjoy every down strock and every up stroke and chords, for me the key is love your guitar and the music, play 9999 times good, enjoy, and improve you guitar level. This channel also can help you to start and improve, enjoy and play! It is important to play more giving a sense to each note than to start playing a scale super fast without sense, this is also why people get stop to play, and many only focus to play a scale very fast

Wow, I’ve just pressed play, maybe this video might give me some hope. I’ve been told exactly what’s mentioned in the title, with the added challenge of being a woman. I got my first guitar as a gift at 15 and played consistently until I was 18, then I stopped because I had to work to support my mother and save some money. Throughout my twenties I kept trying to get back into practicing, but I could never stick with it for more than a week. Now I’m 30, and it’s really sad to realise I’ve forgotten everything, including the creativity I once had to come up with riffs and melodies. Ugh it’s so frustrating

imo even though these exercises are cool and might be tricky even for an intermediate player, the one in his/her 30's (tbh the age doesn't matter here) who took a guitar for the first time will unlikely get the point of it and in the worst case can lose the interest. if the main goal is to become technical player asap, the best decision is to find a skilled mentor who will guide you from the basics and deliberately practice everyday

I was just trying to learn a song that has a triplet and sixteenth note passage and noticed how much of a difference being in the correct timing makes specially on faster tempos. It doesn't sound correct at all if you don't play with the proper timing! In fact is sounds so BAD, timing is so important!
