I lived and worked in a small town in Nigeria from 1979-81, and rode a motorcycle to get around and also travel around the country. "What did you bring me?" is like a common greeting. I asked my Nigerian friends how to answer it, and they said to laugh it off as Noraly did, or respond with a joke, or say "Next time." Everyone who goes from point A to point B gets asked that, not just white women! And obviously people can't be carrying around gifts for every single person they meet, especially on a motorcycle. Nigerian culture is very "in your face" and extroverted compared to other countries in West Africa, which I also visited. I had to get used to it, but it was a relief to return to my introverted side when I left.

As a Gambian residing in the UK, as I watch this video from an unbiased standpoint, it is evident that there are still exceptional and courteous police officers who warmly embrace everyone, as showcased in these videos. However, there are still many corrupt and morally compromised individuals in the police force, hindering the progress and growth not only of the country but also of Africa as a whole.

I had the exact same experience at Abuja International Airport after arrival. An official (lady) at the final security check just before the airport's exit confiscated my suitcase and said "Give me something". When I told her I don't understand, she said again, "Give me something, anything", and refused to release my suitcase until I complied. All of this happened right in front of several heavily armed security officers (maybe military), all of them heard this, but none of them interjected, even when I protested. Apparently this is perfectly normal in Nigeria.

I am Nigerian. I was traveling out lately and I was asked for money by about 5-6 different staffs at different checkpoint. When I told my friend about the experience, he told me that they were all in it together. That at the end of each work day, they split the money they have collected from "tasking" travelers among themselves. In the meantime, I would like to ask you a question. Are you born again?

@@DrDingus It's a longer story as I was also held up for about 2 hours by a guy in passport control who confiscated my passport to solicit a bribe. I refused and when they changed shifts, the next passport control officer took my passport out from under the counter where the previous guy put it, stamped it, and let me through. It was a business trip and I was concerned that the shuttle sent by the company to pick me up would leave without me. My phone couldn't connect to the local network so I couldn't call. So I did what I had to to get out of there. It was a gaunlet of bribe solicitation to get through that airport. The rason I commented here was because the same term "give me something" was used by the second person, so I wanted to share.

First, I'm so happy your channel found me. I'm a Black American who just returned from visiting Nigeria for the first time two weeks ago, and I fell in love with this country. Yes, there is "police corruption," but I learned that even that problem among some, not all, officers, as the video shows, is due to economic issues. No excuse, just a reality. Beyond that, this video actually proves that the vast majority of Nigerians you encounter are grateful, peaceful, and welcoming people. Noraly did not encounter any threats at all... something I found to be refreshing while there. I live in a large, modern metropolitan city here in the U.S. and trust me when I say there are neighborhoods here that Noraly would not have been safe traversing through with such amazing technological gear. In fact, her Alaska would probably have new bike owners. Facts. Again, Nigeria is a place to be loved, honored, and respected as a country with great culture, beautiful land, and a developing economy. I can envision how living conditions there could only improve with care and support from the world community...not disdain and ignorance from those who only grab a few negative snippets from a short video. Keep up your pilgrimages, Noraly. I will also be watching you now. One Love.❤

It was also nice to see how almost every single person she met in Nigeria was warm, friendly, pleasant and welcoming of her. I travelled many countries in the world and have never seen this level of hospitality and openness from the local people. In other countries I don't remember people asking me where i was from or how my family was and where i was going. All you get is the occasional stares. Kudos to Nigerians. One love.

Exactly. But she chose to remember the one that begged her for money. And there are nigerians in this comment section sheepishly condemning the entire police force because of that. I have personally experienced police brutality in nigeria but that doesn't mean I should just condemn the entire police or entire country all the time just for the sake of it. A lot of us clearly have inferiority complex with white people. This comment section shows that clearly.

While in college I had several classes with a guy from Nigeria. His name I believe was Bolaji, but I can’t remember his last name. I still remember how pleasant he was and was always in a good mood. He was always dressed in the finest clothes, as if he were meeting someone important and always, always had the best smelling cologne. He was working on his bachelor’s degree to get into med school. I have no doubt that young man became a doctor as he made straight A’s. He not only was going to school full time he also worked at a minimum of 40 hours/week for his Uncle whom was sponsoring him to be in the US. I asked why he would work so much and he said he did not want to dishonor himself or his Uncle for allowing him to live with his family for free while going to school. So he worked to contribute to the household out of respect and honor. Just wow.

Don't worry. The UK police do it too. Here in Britain, they don't expicitly ask you for money for themselves, like we saw in this video, but they try to find something with which they can "fine you" with - any excuse to claim you are "breaking the law' so that they can collect revenue from people. And, it's not just police - traffic wardens, environmental enforcement officers, council workers, etc. do this also. Corrupt people are everywhere across the face of our beautiful earth.

In the normal countries the officers policies take care about other things. 1. This barrier is to stop people and ask for something. 2. This is very disrespect to any travelers. The Africa problem is not poorest place but poorest mentality. If changes this poorest mentality, the countries can change from they poorest in prosperity.

As a good Nigeria....you learn not to wear the outsized image of the Country.....if you are good as it is traded then assumed you are not corrupt or living it. Often collective bashing is as a result inability of people not reading right....at least knowing how to infer.

That was an embarrassment for an officer and frankly, disgusting. Carrying oneself in such situation by standing your ground without invoking aggression in other people is a skill not many people possess and you clearly have mastered it. I strive to achieve that skill day because I'd lose my cool as soon as they try to extort me for money. Be careful out there, Noraly. I wish you a safe journey.

In Cambodia I was alone at the top apartment of my soon-to-betray-me "friend's" place when a big Khmer guy appeared and tried to get in. He told me to open for him, but I was not going to open for a total stranger, so he got furious, and in his clucking language said he wanted to kill me. I know the word for kill. He tried to reach through the window bars to no avail. Frustrated, he left but I stayed inside until the next day in case he tried ambushing me later. I regret moving to Scambodia. I could write a book about how horrible this place is.
