I have absolutely no need for a knife like this, but I would love to own one. It's a work of art - beautifully crafted and sharper than anything I've ever seen.

I've lived in Taiwan as an expat for quite a while. I've read quite a bit about these knives. The practice of making them started a long time ago, after the Republic of China came to Taiwan during its civil war with the communists. The outer islands around Taiwan were military installations and they regularly exchanged cannon fire with the communists on the mainland. There was a lot of spent casings and fragments around, and locals took these and began the cottage industry of forging them into knives. They've become famous over time, but they're becoming rare. There's a limited supply of these 50+-year-old casings to be found. Thankfully, the supply isn't being replenished.

@RusLAN-kr4uw2 жыл бұрын
@geniapev2 жыл бұрын

The stronger the steel the bigger the explosion. Those are decommissioned tank/naval armaments (the explosive part) not the casing. Nice to see them made into something useful. Excellent work 👍👍

Tough enough to cleave, sharp enough to cut a single layer of scales. That's a very ingenious design.

Technically speaking these knives are used to deconstruct😁. I agree with your sentiment and I happen to have a couple of pieces of armor from an armored vehicle with which I intend to make a small camping ax/tomahawk, a few knives and woodworking tool blades. Peace.
(Italian language).

I don't question the blacksmith's skill at all, it's beautiful when you can do it with iron and fire. I just have doubts that this steel is really good for knives. The body of the artillery projectile is made of cast steel and it is of a different quality than bearing or spring steel.
@kingsglans16922 жыл бұрын
But again, it is true that cast steel and cast iron about 2% of carbon pass into each other, and this fish butcher's knife can easily have a high-carbon, well-hardened blade, albeit maybe brittle. Here, when slicing fish, the metal of this type of knife is not stressed, it does not have to be tough. Dominantly he must be well quenched and sharp.
@Riyame2 жыл бұрын
The old videos I have seen of them being made they were all forged and machined, not cast.
@kingsglans16922 жыл бұрын
@@Riyame I do not rule out what you say, because there are many variants and combinations. It probably depends on what kind of ammunition it is, caliber, from which time and from which manufacturer. A more special type of grenade and enough time for production (peace period) wishes forging and more demanding procedures. Casting the body and adjusting the dimensions by machining is easier than forging. These pieces of knife-making material obviously come from common field HE ammunition produced in huge series, there must be also a fragmentation of the body, a reasonable fragility. The strength obtained by forging is a redundant parameter. Another thing is AP ammunition and its variants.. due to the penetration of the material, excellent forged and heat-treated steel is used. Typically naval ammunition and antitank, antibunker shells. Of these, however, the fragment used for the knife would look completely different. Cannons and knives, this is a beautiful area of working with "iron" material.

This is Jinmen Island. They are known for forging knives with shells of the bomb. At the end of 1949, kuomintang escaped to Taiwan and the border line defense was the island of Jinmen. After fierce combat, Communist Party of China re-attacked this place with 470,000 bombs within three months in 1958. Since so many bomb shells were left in that small island, they decided to forge knives out of it.
