I must be the only one thinking that the gen 2 is the better option. Especially with it being the same price as the gen 1. The factory MLOK handguard is a great upgrade considering a lot of gen 1 owners replaced their handguards for either a RS Regulate or Midwest Industries handguard (which saves you $200+). And the AR buffer tube is a big upgrade over the gen 1 stock which didn't have the option for you to change stocks due to its proprietary design. Sure the gen 1 sights were nice, but the standard today is adding an optic to a rifle.

I guess it depends on what you want it for. If it’s to collect militaria, Gen 1. If it’s a tool, Gen 2. I think IWI actually just listened to their customer base. Everyone was swapping out the handguards anyway, installing the ALG trigger, and the front sight post on the Gen 1 was imprecise due to width. Frankly, I’ve shot both, and liked both. The Gen 2 is definitely an improved version. My only gripe is that Micha’s right in that the bolt is not as “ornately” milled. I prefer the original bolt. Everything else, I’m good w the improvements. She’s a tank.

Got my 16” Gen 1 556 a few months back. Absolutely love it. I HATED the trigger tho. Luckily Dissident Arms and a few other companies shape out ALG triggers to fit the 556 variant allowing you to keep your bolt hold open. Just make sure you use your original trigger spring and hammer spring. Oh and don’t forget to remove that little block that’s at the front base of the hammer so your hammer actually makes contact with the bolt. Just remove the polymer lower and you’ll see a little screw you remove with an Allen key. Boda bing boda boom reassemble and you’re good to go!

For what its worth? I agree with your 2nd/updated plan. An Ace willl never truely be a classic Galil, really not even 100% as a Micro. So what people are doing is cutting up an Ace to make a hybrid or mutt gun. Sometimes we just need to realise the good in what we do have vs worrying over what we don't have.

And, call me old fashioned, but I'm not really a fan of mlok and prefer good ol' 1913 rails on both my AR15s and my AKs (if I have rails at all on my AK). @SOBIsHobbies
@SOBIsHobbies 2 жыл бұрын
To answer your question I believe there are couple of reasons. And the very first one being that Gen 1 is now discontinued. Since there’s no longer production of gen 1 Galils it’s more of a rarity to find one than the current 2nd gen. Second point, gen 1 Galil was a copy of actual military version of Galil. Consequently it’s more desired by collectors and military firearm enthusiasts. Thirdly, gen 1 Galil was more refined and had more unique IWI touches where you could tell right away that it was Galil ACE by looking at it as opposed to gen 2. And Misha mentions those unique things in his video. Second generation Galil looks more like mixture of couple of firearms (AR, CZ Bren and etc) but certainly doesn’t look like a Galil that everyone was used to seeing. Granted it does have some added modularity features but that’s the only advantage that goes towards gen 2 Galil’s way. Otherwise, gen 1 Galil ACE has lot more personality than gen 2. I was on the verge of “upgrading” my gen 1 Galil ACEs when IWI introduced gen 2. However, after seeing how gen 2 looks and what kind of reception it received by enthusiasts I quickly realized that I should keep my originals. Demand for gen 1s is keep on rising and I think in few years time their values will only get higher.
@mikewatson1517
@mikewatson1517 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Misha, do you think there are any other steps IWI took to cheapen the gen 2s that are a bit worse than mere cosmetics? Ignoring the removal of the irons of course. For instance, Inferior materials? My concern is one that you voiced with where this road typically leads manufacturers. I'm willing to ignore the removal of the lightning cuts, in particular if they've already hit their weight requirement(s) through the new handguard and what not. Lack of irons isn't great, but fine. Losing the texture on the charging handle also sucks. But are all of the same parts still forged? Is this Americanized crap or is it a real workhorse identical to the original? Sidenote: My guess as to why the pistol version of the Gen 2 has a one slot buffer tube for its stock is purely a risk mitigation measure with respect to the BATFE. Perhaps it's easier to sell it as a 'brace' vs a stock if its not adjustable.
@misha5670
@misha5670 2 жыл бұрын
I have no evidence or reason to suspect that IWI is making the barrel or receiver out of inferior material. Saving a few lightning cuts is one thing, but setting up a whole different productionline to make US guns would seem to cost more money, not less.

13 inch 7.62x39 is the best choice between size/weight and performance. You almost don't lose any velocity from 16 inch, but you do lose quite some weight and length. Valid points. Gen 2 will be difficult for it to compete against the AR15 for the price and weight. I am wondering how much more muzzle heavy Gen 2 is with that chunky rail.

The gen 1 is in the desirable original military configuration - adopted by quite a few countries (Chile, Vietnam, etc.) and now that its gone forever, highly collectable. Killing everything that makes it a Galil is dumb (iron sights, weird handguards, proprietary buttstock, etc.) and makes it not as collectable, unique or fun. The gen 2 is just a boring "AR-ified" Galil Ace that might appeal to a few AR guys. Not everything in the world needs a buffer tube stock and ugly metal handguards for mounting every accessory under the sun. I think IWI should still offer some gen 1s along with this - why force the consumer into a corner and not give us options? But this is a clear case of tyranny of the majority, manufacturer practicality and profits of course.

I don’t think this review is accurate at all. Whoever wants an AK but doesn’t want an old Soviet platform buys a galil. The way Mish is saying it is “whoever buys this doesn’t want an AR” since when did galil ever compete with a DI AR? You can’t compare a piston driven AK platform to a “perfectly good ar” there is NO di ar chambered in 7.62 that can shoot like this. And if the buffer tube is the issue just change it they cost little to nothing. This gun is NOT cheaper than the gen1 in quality and the price hike can be blamed on inflation. I really didn’t like this review at all, you’re not looking at it through the eyes of someone who wants to spend 2k on a SAM7 but decides to invest it in a better more modular AK style variant.
