correction: there are more J-20's in service than the F-22 today...there are over 200+ J-20's and more are being built. While the US has 170ish F-22? and that's it.

@@joosiekawk the J20 is a great fighter but now the challenge starts with the next phase which is monitoring/improving/upgrades/tests etc. Even with new engines this is part of execution & improvement of all human-made technology on this planet. Something that the US has been doing for 20+ years with the Raptor F22 fleet. So China is 20 years behind in this phase in comparison with the USA. Again remember that the upgraded Raptors are 5+ th gen and J20 is still an early 5th gen in development. With development I do not mean production, but test/monitoring/improvements design/upgrades/tests etc.

The J-20 actually has quite a few variants, not only does it have 2 and single seat variants, but it also has 3 different types of engines, when it was first made it used imported Russian engines (cant remember which one) and then transitioned to an upgraded WS-10 used on the J-10C and J-15 and now it uses the WS-15 engine.

J-20's maximum speed is 2.55 Mach when equipped with WS-10C engines(China's state media once reported that J-20's pilot said J-20 flied 52 kilometers per minute. That is 2.55 Mach), J-20's maximum speed is 2.8 Mach when equipped with WS-15 engines. The total number of J-20 in service is more than 200 right now. The J20 has front canards but the F20 and F35 do not use canards. It is a totally different design in aerodynamics. But strange that the commentator keeps saying there are similarities and China must have stolen data. In engineering there is a concept of convergence of design. That is given a set of physical and chemical principles to solve an engineering design problem the solution looks similar. For example bows and arrows. In prehistoric times with little or no communications, isolated countries or communities have bows and arrows. Although different in size, lengths and materials all bows and arrows look similar.

Actually they keep updating the F22. Because of lack of stealth in the J20 is very comparable. With the J20 and F35 hardly have a payload unless they carry under wings and lose all stealth. F22 carries more in the belly. The range of the radar of J20 and F22 are close, F22 has 200km, J20 has 170km. At their speeds that is mute point. I have always said even with crappy range of flight, I would still take a Raptor over the others

Common theme with Chinese and Russian “stealth” aircraft. Have the outward appearance of having stealth features but are missing the less glamorous details such as the correct nozzles, frameless canopies etc. I feel these aircraft are produced for the purpose of optics rather than having a major military value. The reality is the US is still decades ahead in technology and capability.

@@robertm5160 Sir IR missiles don't follow exhaust of a jet engine. It track hot part of it. Part of the J20's engine is exposed and thus easier for IR missiles to track. F35's engine nozzle is also open. ( otherwise how the gas will pass) but beside the nozzle no other part is exposed. So lesser IR signature. I think you also know that.

The nozzles do have stealth features. If you look closely it has serrations to reflect some of the RF. Also it is not like the f22 because round nozzles are more efficient. They are maximizing the power from the engines by leaving the nozzles round.

The Raptor's engines are probably extremely efficient, as well as an order of magnitude more stealthy than any round nozzles out there... which is basically everything OTHER than a -22. If there was any sort of tangible efficiency issue, it doesn't seem that any the countries that are trying to develop rectangular nozzles care much about it.

It's a shame that the true cost of the F-35 extends all the way now into the complete loss of overwhelming dominance, from just a few short years ago. With the MUCH longer-raged J-20, and no F-22 in production, the tech that tax payers have paid hundreds of billions to develop now struggles to stay current in a jet still heavily under development, as J-20 production rates soar. There should be no need for a mad-rush to get to 6th-gen, yet that's what it seems we are faced with - And with quoted costs of several hundred mill a piece, and intended production runs of 200 aircraft, it also looks like the value of quantity in the quality vs. quantity conundrum is heading to near-0. Seems like nothing has been truly learned from the F-35, there's way too much fascination with its wiz-bangs for the powers-that-be to acknowledge that the cost of this program is not an $80M aircraft... It is much, much higher. 4th-gen fighters' service lives have had to be extended to make up for the time spent with a ridiculous all-eggs-in-one-basket approach - As has been said many times before, the F-35 is a great Strike aircraft, with some amazing tech/capabilities - But that tech has come at an incredible price, in both $$$ and time... And production rates now are stalling out as the realization sets in that 20+ years into dev, MAJOR upgrades/tech need to be accomplished just to get to the baseline capabilities that should be non-starters. If the F-35 delivers EVERY capability promised and the J-20 lags behind in sensor tech and avionics as the F-35 Club insists, then there should be no rush to get to 6th-gen. But based on at least its stealthy outline, long range, good payload, good maneuverability, and now engines to challenge F119 engine performance, BOTH of those conditions would need to be met in order for F-35 to cope with the threat of J-20. Here's to hoping the F-35 fan club is right, because if they're wrong on any of it, the J-20 WOULD be a problem.

J-20 primary mission is for taking out US, Japanese and Australian AWACS's and Tankers. WVR or "Within Visual Range" is its second mission and its too heavy and fat to do it well.

The F-35 doesn't even need to ever dogfight, it can destroy threats from an entirely different country before they even know they're under attack, like happened in the Iran-Iraq War. It's like a mini B2 with better stealth, that can use the best missiles the world currently has. I heard it's an absolute nightmare trying to get new-ish missiles to work with old planes, especially the F-16.

This doesn't really tell anything that will make a difference. Stealth and avionics are closely-held secrets. I'm always curious why America made a smaller plane. They probably need a slightly bigger one for competitive range, so they wouldn't have to refuel so often and have that vulnerability. But like Lazerpig said, the F-35 is like a gun, and all other planes are like crossbows. They're not even comparable.
