I'm Nigerian and I was in Lagos during End Sars. I vividly remember what happened that night because I had friends that protested there and lived around the Lekki tollgate. And I remember the two weeks govt. imposed lockdown that followed. The scariest two weeks of my life - things that happened in our homes, our businesses (I lost a lot during that period but at least I'm alive). It was the tipping point that made me relocate from Nigeria, I just couldn't take it anymore. Some people are being really silly in their defence of this issue and I am not going to turn this into a diaspora war but some of you hmmmm......... To be Nigerian is to be in constant threat of violence by people that look like you, by Nigerian political elites that work for and are supported by post colonial capitalist interests. I don't care for the outrage tbh, people will do whatever they want to do and hindsight is always clearer than foresight. I don't know Jackie's intent so I can't speak about that but it is disheartening to see people become xenophobic in an attempt to support Jackie and dismiss the valid criticism she's getting from Nigerians online.

"And other thing" (LOL) Even if she had been outspoken during the protests, I still think those "Soro Soke" candles were a bad idea. Nigeria has such a vibrant culture, you don't even have to be Nigerian to know this. We're the largest black nation in the world and we have over 200 languages. - She could have done a collection inspired by Adire fabric, recreating the textile patterns from artisans on the candles; - She could have done a collection inspired by Yoruba mythology - Osun, Ifa, Esu etc. - She could have even created something inspired by Benin bronzes and Nsibidi symbols. I'm not sure why Soro Soke was the first thing that popped into her head.

Tope, I'm Ghanaian w/ some Nigerian ancestry and lived there for part of my childhood. The last time I was in Nigeria was before these events. I'm so sorry for all the traumatic events that led to your leaving. I'm horrified by what has been transpiring in general. The last few years on 1st October, I communicated via WhatsApp to share my prayers and hopes for Naija and her people. But before and after, I'd weep. The corruption, exploitation of ethnic, religious differences are a microcosm of what's plaguing the continent. The enemies from without find literal and figurative purchase for their crimes by the enemies within and the masses suffer. I send good intentions and prayers for health and peace your way - it's no small thing to leave home. After independence (such as it is), many of our folks returned to build. Even in cases of the brain drain, children of such folk left the West for some place on the continent again to build and contribute. This wasn't/isn't without the class or sometimes ideological issues, but most wanted progress. Especially those who by choice or circumstance never left. The indomitable spirit, innovation, profound faith in The Divine, hard work and perseverance as habit has been their norm. Leaving home under such circumstances is heartbreaking. I continue to believe, hope and trust that Nigeria and Africa shall thrive despite all efforts of bad actors. May joy, mutual support and harmony be the characteristics of Nigerian community you have wherever you are.

I struggle to balance my thoughts on Jackie, because on one hand, in comparison to her white beauty community peers she definitely gets her feet held to the fire a whole lot more and so much more is expected from her. Also society can't wait to humble successful black women. And then on the other hand, where there are valid criticisms or concerns raised to her, she handles it so messy.

I've watched "Black Girls Deserve More Than Luxury" five or six times, it's one of the best messages I've heard on For Harriet BECAUSE I see so much of my culture in that video as well. I think about so often how as a child of immigrant parents, who worked so hard to pull themselves up from nothing, the part where if my family has a bad day, we're all broke again. It's so true, it resonates with how nervous I am with money so badly. It has nothing to do with material possessions or "nice things", it's about having equity and being able to be comfortable without thinking you're gonna be miserable if you can't keep up. Just wanted to write how much I appreciated it, so thank you. I liked your commentary for this topic as well.

The day this happened I listened to a twitter spaces where Nigerians were recounting their experiences during the end sars movement. It was truly heartbreaking & familiar given America's policing. Just horrible, violent, & traumatic. What's even grimier about this situation is I don't think Jackie did this unintentionally. There's absolutely no way (in my mind) she didn't consider this being a possible outcome. She's not uneducated & she's done so much championing for black women in the beauty guru space. I think she did this on purpose to create buzz. She's had some questionable moments/scandals in the past, but this is very shocking for me to see as a fan of hers. A friend of mine lost her best friend at the protest, and his family was lucky to have been able to bury a physical body (the army literally took away people who they sh**t. I will never take away what Jackie Aina what she did for the makeup industry, but I think we need to stop ignoring Jackie has shown that her activism only matters when it’s suitable for her since she hit it big. Don’t forget how she refused to say anything about the Rich Lives Matters thing with Too Faced because she had a complexion line with them. Or that she copyright struck Petty Paige when Paige called her out for not clearly labeling affiliation codes in a kind manner then months later made a false fraud accusation against Paige for no reason. Then how she dragged Juvia’s Place for thanking J* for his review, falsely accusing the owner for sending him PR when she didn’t and accused her for shunning black influencers but never apologized when the owner was gong to announce her first collab with a black influencer just before that blow up happened. Then Jackie agrees to do a palette with Anastasia Beverly Hill when Norvina was literally one of J*’s pals and had a long history not working with beauty gurus of color until Jackie and still have bad shade ranges for darker skinned folks at times. But this Sore Soko candle is worse than those incidents because Jackie blocked Nigerians who asked for her support during the EndSARS movement and only said something when the backlash didn’t go away (and she used the Soro Soke phrase back then so she absolutely knew the context of that phrase). Then she does this? At a certain point, we have to stop making excuses for Jackie. I can’t support someone who made their whole brand around inclusion and activism for them to use it when it seems fit. And I can’t really support anyone who does these slights towards a community that are her biggest fans and supports several times with no change. I know people are saying “well the White influencers get away with everything”but they are not getting that it’s a problem that needs to be rectified. It’s all about educating yourself on the issue then you can understand why people are outraged. No one was expecting her to speak up, she is not an activist or the spokes person on behalf of the Nigerian community. But she didn’t when the end sars movement was happening, she instead blocked people that were looking to her to lend a voice. It was all about using her platform to spread awareness on the brutal killings going on in Nigeria for someone who claims to be Nigerian and has had no issues calling out people and brands in the past. However “Soro soke” has been tied to the incident that took place Oct 20th 2020 because a lot of people lost their lives for standing up and peacefully protesting which literally created a shift. I think it would be interesting to analyze this situation with Fanon in mind. In his book on the Algerian révolution (don't know the english title, sorry), he wrote about his experience in a Congress gathering black people from across the world (US, Gabon, etc). He expressed how race does not negate class and national interests and questions (meaning : Black Americans don't have to solve the same issues as a Nigerian basically). In this regard, this situation highlights how diaspora has to know its place, and be careful not to have a purely aesthetical relation to their origins whilst people still there have to lead the political battle. Sorry if it wasn't clear, it's just a vague thought. I do think that Fanon foreshadowed and exposed clearly those issues.

For a little minute I was a fan of Jackie but I started feeling iffy about her after seeing her reply to a comment in one of her makeup videos where someone commented that people can't really afford the "luxury" brands she uses (now it was just in a joking, casual manner, crying emoji and all) and she responded rather rudely that people buy some other luxury brand and all the comments after were like "If we can't afford Brand A, what makes you think we can afford Brand B??" I feel like Jackie just forgot she came up from essentially no money and now she's just obsessed with money and luxury and lost all connection with reality.

I had no idea who Jackie was prior to this incidents. However, I must say the bigger issue is the cultural disconnect and her influencer status just heightens it. There's a lot to say about this, but I think if she created a full campaign, storytelling, with the launch it would have provided greater context. The words have positive meaning but the End SARS movement is too dynamic which is why people called her out.

I think it’s valid that people are concerned about that. I don’t know what she was trying to achieve but as a Nigerian I feel like it was a bit greedy of her to try to make money off of something she never even fully (publicly) supported. Business is business but it just isn’t ethical or even intelligent to act like there isn’t going to be an emotional response to ‘SORO SOKE’ as a name for a candle line, clothing line, whatever she’s selling. She shouldn’t act surprised, it literally means Speak Up. She should’ve explained what we need to speak up about. What’s the context?? What’s this candle even about? I immediately thought of your post on black women in luxury when this story came out. This "movement" or "trend" will burn itself out because no matter how well these black women play dress up, the reality of being a black woman within a patriarchal and racist society will always catch up with them no matter how much personal work they think they have done to escape by being beautiful, rich and respectable.

Nothing will burn out. It just evolves with the times. This luxury movement has been around since the 60's. It was just limited to pictures and articles in magazines. White people are called out all the time when they misappropriate, when their dishonest, and so forth but the white apparatus protects them because they’ve normalized that form of cruelty and harm. When black people are holding each other accountable its not asking too much. It’s asking our people to not mistreat us in the same way. I’m sick of the white ppl do it so why can’t we excuse! Jackie is facing valid criticism, particularly from Nigerian community (who is most intimately affected by her marketing faux pas), just like other Black influencers and celebrities that are silent about Black issues but don’t hesitate to use those same issues to make profit. I think it’s more an issue of her just being a first gen immigrant-a half immigrant at that, and that’s no shade but not having two parents of the immigrant experience further exacerbates this issue…and I say this as a first gen immigrant myself (both parents from the same nation). Because of that, you’re gonna miss things and just possibly not have as nuanced a take as people from the country would. To that end I think it’s also important to see why she may lean more into luxury…especially as a kid of immigrants. Your parent(s) sacrificed everything and now you’ve made it made it, flexing seems appropriate in this sense. I agree about the nuance of politics with luxury, and I can’t fault Jackie for it, and luxury just isn’t my speed, or many other peoples (but we’d be remiss if we acted like she didn’t have part to play in the mainstream rise in popularity of perfumes and luxury consumption by black women. I find that interesting). I also wanna say, it’s no longer 2018, I’m no longer 20, I no longer see an apology and say, “this is bs they’re just doing it cause xyz…” I have no space to say that that well written apology was fake-cause if she didn’t issue one it’d be a problem. I follow Jackie but I don’t really pay attention to her (nor do I pay attention to Instagram in general). What I do see her leaning into (luxury, “luxury”, and scents, etc.) doesn’t entice me, but I would be lying if I said that this is what I usually see and expect from this group of first gen women. Jackie has flown too close to the sun several times and unfortunately we have to bare witness to it. We’d be remiss not to recognize her impact but we’d be equally as remiss not to acknowledge her missteps and her occasional loud and (unfortunately) wrong behaviors. Hope she bounces back without too much strife as her white peers have. Also Kim that Luxury video is the shit, man. Loved the hell out of it because yeah, it hit the nail on the head. I am not Nigerian and cannot speak for others who have seen pain during this time. But I do have conflicting thoughts. I like that Jackie, a black woman is giving the white influencers a run for their money and she’s always championed diversity of all kinds - religion, race, ethnicity, body size. But I officially stopped following her when I saw she was besties with scammers. Not for me. I still sometimes check out her content because again, she’s always championed black women. This seems to be a learning curve and could’ve sparked real conversation for change. And I don’t know that it has done? (However, because of it I’ve gone an learned more about SARS for sure!) at first, I thought, okay what’s the big issue? Of course she knew what those words meant in this climate. That’s why she chose them, surely! She’s trying to bring light to these issues, using her platform and it’s Nigerian saying first and foremost before these incidents. I even thought, she’s clearly giving the proceeds to the movement! But from reading the comments… it doesn’t seem like it. It could’ve done with a proper campaign - a social justice campaign even. Someone else said it in the comments, some storytelling, the background, the movement and why she’s named it that way. As a Brit, I’ve been so shocked at some African-American mercy that say “I can’t breathe” or the more appealing “say her name”. I thought they were on the same line, as a sort of empowering message, but I still can’t look past it, because, I too still catch myself falling on my words after I’ve said “get your foot off my neck” or something of those lose because it was a saying FIRST before George Floyd. So I do understand, Nigerians point of view a lot clearer. Language is powerful and we shouldn’t abuse it, especially for capitalism. Thank you for everyone in the comments who has shared their experiences - even though it’s a comment section you can still learn something new everyday!

I'm Nigerian and was a movement organiser. While I think people were ridiculously harsh to Jackie, thematically the Soro Soke candle does not fit with the other candles that are more about enjoying life and living in the lap of luxury, so there is a major disconnect. But I think people responded the way they did in part because things are especially bad in Nigeria right now. A lot of people are very sensitive towards wealthy diasporans who seem disconnected from their reality, people who seem to benefit from Nigeria culturally, wearing it like an accessory but never having to deal with the actual serious hardships that come with being Nigerian (and it is hard out here if all you have is a Nigerian passport, even coming from a relatively privileged background). I give Jackie grace and I think a lot of the response was projection and the climate, but I get why people are angry. I don't think people really took into account how vocal she has been for black women and how active in trying to do good. I also think some of it is just the fact that people feel a way once they start to see black women actually enjoying luxury (which is not to say that that's the only thing we should aspire to).

I think luxury is definitely a political statement because of the sociopolitical and economic factors that determine who achieves it and how long it's taken for some groups of people to attain luxury🤔. We would need to have a deeper dive into that on the other hand, I'm not entirely against it but it brings points of moral contentions to bare with how it encourages the consumerism and show off on them lifestyles. I think it's wasteful and further oppresses those who for reasons beyond their control, aren't living a decent quality of life due to their economic hardships.

I def understand the anger and hurt from the people offended by this candle, and I'm glad she removed it from the collection and owned up to how messed up it was to exploit that movement for profit. But...I really struggle with the idea that people with platforms MUST make public statements in a certain timeframe or it's a problem. As a human being without a platform, there are issues I share/ post about and some I don't. Sometimes I don't feel I have anything to add to the convo. Sometimes I feel too uninformed. Sometimes it's too emotionally upsetting. Sometimes it just takes a minute to gather my thoughts and decide WHAT I even want to say. Sometimes I don't want a comment section full of folks who wanna argue about whatever it is. People with platforms are still people. The idea that because she didn't immediately say something on social media, she just didn't care - that's just not fair. And if she was blocking people for badgering her about not posting fast enough....I'd probably do the same and most of the people dragging her would too. Like, you're not finna rush me to speak publicly on something so serious in the timefrane YOU think is best. It's just unfortunate how we don't extend basic human grace to influencers. It's like people just be sitting in the cut waiting for any sort of misstep from influencers so they can drag and I haaaaate that mentality.

I completely agree! It’s dehumanizing to not allow people (who aren’t politicians) to make statements about things that aren’t even in their field of work! I’ve noticed this trend in 2020 during the protests and it set a bad precedent in my opinion! People need room to digest the news, they need room to remove themselves if they want, they need room to learn… this is why a public apology is never satisfying because it’s coming as a result of public shaming rather than from a place of self reflection!

Agreed. During the End Sars movement, Jackie admitted that she didn't know about the movement and just wanted to read up and educate herself before making a post. I think that's fair, but she constantly gets dragged even though I remember her posting something, just not as fast as people wanted.

Jackie notoriously blocks people, she is not good at emotionally processing criticism, so if she doesn’t have anything to say or she feels like she’s being attacked she will block you. However I’m sure the intent was not malicious even though the out come was insensitive.

When is everybody actually going to realize Jackie is a scammer? who the hell sells overpriced candles when you can find better for less elsewhere. Also She is not for inclusion, she does not care for anything unless it actually benefits her pockets! She also doesn’t know what accountability is. She is only Nigerian when it’s convenient.

Honestly... anything she did would be met with "This doesn't feel genuine" "Don't apologize now" ... there really is no path back to redemption that most folks wouldn't interpret as self serving PR rehab. She'd be better off moving on and continuing to supporting culture, as she has always done.

My only issue with us as a population is that we are our own worst enemy. We can sit back and judge and say what a person should have done, could have done etc. We get mad when someone makes it and don't want to admit being jealous and envious. Let people make their money and live. If she made a mistake, so be it. To err is human...Do we always have to throw stone? and if so, don't forget, we too will be judged? Live and let live. That is why we are a race is stuck and will always be stuck. The expectations you put on others, put on yourself!

The comments here are weird it’s giving let me minimise the feelings and valid outrage of a group of ppl because it doesn’t impact me directly. The outrage is warranted because it was tone deaf and disrespectful to those that lose their lives. Jackie Aina is not above correction and although I doubt she did not know what the phrase meant I can understand if in her ignorance she missed the mark.

I love Jackie and the black girl in luxury movement, I’m pretty sure all the rich black women know they will still face injustice and racism no one is delusional but if a black woman can get out of the hood where she’s being murdered every 5.5 hours by some dusty and can afford good access to health care and safety and enjoy some of the nice things this shitty world can offer I’m not mad at all and I think more black women should become comfortable with the idea that luxury can mean to them whatever they want it to mean and they can have some of that too if they want to and it doesn’t take away from their blackness.

I watched for years as Jackie stole from smaller Black KZbin MUAs. They all opt to stay silent to not be labeled "hater" and have her fanbase swarm them. Also, her mother is African-American when she first came online she 100% marketed herself as such. She scrapped that channel and came back as "Nigerian". Bottom line she's always been self-serving.

Immigrant perspective: it’s really common to misunderstand the movements and the ongoing cultures in the countries we came from. I see this in a lot of my 1st gen friends, I have to remind them that we don’t understand what is going on over there. Additionally we have our own culture here that develops in that intersection of class, immigration status, race etc that is very different. I’m not really that surprised about the gaffe, but it is unfortunate no one on her team noticed or did the due diligence.
