Jackson Browne performs "Farther On” with Greg Leisz for the Jack Barton Entertainment SummitFest. Thank you Triple A Radio!
This performance is dedicated to Al Schmitt, who recorded “Late For the Sky” with Jackson. Al was a legendary recording engineer who won the most Grammys, and worked with Steely Dan, Jefferson Airplane, Henry Mancini, and so many more, everyone really. He passed away in April 2021 at age 91.
Filmed, recorded and mixed by Kevin Smith

LYRICS:
In my early years i hid my tears
And passed my days alone
Adrift on an ocean of loneliness
My dreams like nets were thrown
To catch the love that I'd heard of
In books and films and songs
Now there's a world of illusion and fantasy
In the place where the real world belongs
Still i look for the beauty in songs
To fill my head and lead me on
Though my dreams have come up torn and empty
As many times as love has come and gone
To those gentle ones my memory runs
To the laughter we shared at the meals
I filled their kitchens and living rooms
With my schemes and my broken wheels
It was never clear how far or near
The gates to my citadel lay
They were cutting from stone some dreams of their own
But they listened to mine anyway
I'm not sure what i'm trying to say
It could be i've lost my way
Though i keep a watch over the distance
Heaven's no closer than it was yesterday
And the angels are older
They know not to wait up for the sun
They look over my shoulder
At the maps and the drawings of the journey I've begun
Now the distance leads me farther on
Though the reasons i once had are gone
I keep thinking I'll find what I'm looking for
In the sand beneath the dawn
But the angels are older
They can see that the sun's setting fast
They look over my shoulder
At the vision of paradise contained in the light of the past
And they lay down behind me
To sleep beside the road till the morning has come
Where they know they will find me
With my maps and my faith in the distance
Moving farther on

The genius of Jackson is that wrote a song at 25 that sounds more appropriate for him to singing when he’s in his 70’s. He’s now farther on. Just beautiful.

Totally agree. His use of lyrics is masterful and his older songs are so bittersweet and beautiful they have nowhere to go but straight to your heart. My friend once told me that I love JB’s music so much because I recognize a truth when I hear it, and I totally get that. (I sound like such a Valley girl, and that’s a truth, because I am!) BTW Jackson if you actually read these comments, I’m going to offer my unsolicited opinion. I miss your trademark hairstyle. I have always loved it💖

@@garylochbaum5253 At the very least he didn’t feel the need to contort his voice to get people to notice , like Dylan did. There are plenty of examples that show that Dylan had a fine voice. Start with Johnny Cash’s TV show. Jackson’s voice is just fine the it was and the way it is. No pretense or ostentation in his voice. Thank you Jackson. And by the way, on this point, has anyone tried to find out why at times Bruce Springsteen wanted to purposely sound like a country bumpkin , especially from New Jersey? I don’t get it and I don’t like it. This is apart from his songwriting. Just his singing abilities.

I lost my younger brother to a brain tumor, when he was 24, and I sat in a dark room and played this song over and over on a record player (circa 1981) and as difficult as that was (and still is) the line about "with my maps and my faith in the distance, moving farther on" helped me immensely. The wording on this song is unbelievable and the line that "the angels are older" I take to mean that time passes but the memories have no time limit and simply stay the same forever.

I love your songs they help me on most days, and make me smile too on some days. " For Everyman" is really a great one thank you for playing your music. I will hopefully be there in San Francisco on The 29th of October. Already have the tickets looking forward to it and seeing James Taylor also.

This song was so relevant to me at 14! Lost my parents. Sad souls so young. But you knew it too. Thank you for this album. Thank you for your music. We were blessed to live when we did. There will never be music like this again. Love you always.

Gosh. He sounds just as good as he did on the 70s. I’ve seen him on concert about 15 times, but boy, would I love to meet him. My life long crush.

I have met Jackson several times. briefly.. before shows is the best bet.if it is a small venue and you know where the stage door is just get there about 3 pm.. he would usually be going in about 4..for the sound check.. he is quite friendly and will do pictures and one autograph per person.. he also can be shy and is very smart and serious.. the way you would expect him to be.. i also saw him at an airport in st. louis.. i spoke to him very briefly a couple of times but didn't want to 'bug ' him.. I hope you do get to meet him.. good luck..... .

Oh my.... Saw him do this in Manchester just a few years ago but really this takes me back to 1974 and one of the greatest Albums ever made. Late For the Sky is still timeless, play it and see. Every track is Magnificent. Thanx Jackson xx
