My favorite part of these games is how the in-game language is actually just character-swapped English. When you decode it, you can find some fun easter egg text on ruins/signs. Ex. In Jak&Daxter, the button you stand on for some of the elevator platforms have a ring of text around it that you can only read in full by staring straight down and spinning the camera around and around. The text? "You are getting very dizzy"

Great video, the first Jak and Daxter is criminally underrated. And I agree with you saying it's one of if not the best platforms of its time. I wish it stayed true to its more traditional routes instead of adding Grand Theft Auto and rachet and clank mechanics. Thanks for the video.

I love your vids man. Cant upload fast enough imo ahaha. The History series is the BEST workday companion. Oh my god, the OG commercials just gave me MEGA NOSTALGIA. I was the EXACT DEMOGRAPHIC for the "edge-y sequel", I was a young (not sure if I identified as fem tbh) enby and I was SO INTO the edgy crazy stuff at the time. Turn a character from a quiet good boy to a gun-toting "I can be your Angle or Demon" -- I was utterly SOLD. Plust even more edge-y experiments / creature feature stuff. Naughty dog as per usual was ON ONE. And the gameplay of Jak 1 and 2... MAN. The MUSIC in Jak 2... I still have dreams of the gun sequences and that triple spin jump in Jak 2. Just pure bliss of a platforming shooter. Thanks for the trip down memory lane....Just THANK you!

Jak and daxter was my first game on a real console. I loved every minute of it. While I was a little shocked by Jak 2, after giving it a chance I even liked it more than the original. And Jak 3 became my favorite because the story was less about the adventure and more about the personal growth of Jak as a character. Jak x was fun too but the story was too predictable for me at the time as I was then older and had developed pattern recognition. After seeing some gameplay and hearing about story elements for that Vita game I simply chose to end things on a high note and didn't play it.

I really gotta say, Jak and Ratchet were NOT the only huge Sony-exclusive platformers of the generation to choose from. Sly Cooper is the obvious other name in the game and it seems extremely strange to leave it out of tbe conversation. Also, strange to not see PlayStation Move Heroes at least mentioned.

I have a somewhat tragic story involving Jak & Daxter. When I was a kid, I saw ads for the first game, but didn't get a copy right away as my mom didn't often buy new games. But when I saw ads for the second game, I absolutely hated it, and wanted nothing to do with it. One day, my mom called me at the store and offered to pick me up a new game, and one of the games she suggested was the first Jak & Daxter. I actually begged her *not* to get it! We got Hot Shots Golf 3 instead. And yes, to this very day, I feel bad even thinking about it. I actually want to go back and pick up this game just so I can right that wrong stupid younger me committed so long ago. But your comments on the tonal shift and the general fan response to it at least give me a bit of solace knowing I wasn't completely alone.

Actually, little did you know Ratchet, Jak, Clank and Daxter appeared in Everybody’s Golf 4 (Hot Shots Golf Fore in your country). Ratchet and Jak are playable golfers while Clank and Daxter are non-playable caddies. Their voice actors even reprised their roles. Depending on which version of this game you got, each version have different golfers and caddies. For example, an Ape Escape character appeared in Everybody’s Golf 4 (as it’s known in the UK, Europe and Japan) as a non-playable caddie.

I didn't mind the transition from Jak to Jak 2 because it reminded me of the jump from Crash 2 to Crash Warped, where in addition to the regular platforming you also had plane dogfights, motorcycle races, jetski levels, animal mount sections, etc. While they definitely took inspiration from GTA3, that sort of gameplay DNA was something Naughty Dog had already experimented with to a degree. I feel like GTA is what gave them the focus for how to bring some of these different elements together, as well as inspire them to add guns to create more of an actual combat system.

Awesome video, currently in a Jak and Daxter marathon and this was an awesome watch. I forgot how good those old commercials were. Hope to see something new with the Jak universe. If I were Naughty Dog, I would have totally created that racing soundtrack for sell to the public. What a good line-up especially for that era of music, they missed that one. Big time. I wasn't into those games but I was into that kind music heavily and would have bought it for the names alone, those musicians were on fire at the time. Again, they missed that chance completely.

Great video! I've never played the Jak games, but ever since I dug my teen-hood launch PS2 out, I've been looking for more great games to play on it. Back in the day, i was more about Ace Combat, Midnight Club, and Time Splitters 2. Never really played any platformers then. Well, aside from Croc on the Saturn and Bonk on the Turbografx. I'll definitely have to give these a try!

I must of been 9 or so when Jak and Dax came out. Ngl I couldn't put that game down as a kid. Rachet and Clank along with this series were so amazing and ground breaking I feel like growing up in the early 00's of the ps2 era. When Jak 2 came out and finally heard Jak speak for once still hits me the same everytime. Idk something about video games and tv shows/media from late 90's early 00's hits so differently

I was in the same camp. I loved the first Jak and Daxter as a kid, but was less fond of Jak 2 for the change in setting and bleaker tone. Still, Jak was probably the first open-world-type game I ever played and I remember being so impressed by how seamlessly all the areas flowed together. It's still an awesome game, definitely one of my favorites of PS2, along with Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank series.

the J&D franchise is a masterpiece with exceptions of all 3 spinoffs (X, Daxter and TLF) no matter how biased your point of view is, they're masterpieces from music to storytelling to gameplay. If you can only see "its potential as a purebreed platformer" that's your lose mate

To me the discarding of the original Jak's gameplay (which was polished to perfection IMO!) felt like how in Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts the intro tells you 'people don't want to play 3d platformers any more' and I was sitting there thinking 'yes I do!' Incidentally there is another game similar to Jak 1, believe it or not it's Disney's Treasure Planet! Obviously it's nowhere near as good but it does use the same game engine so it could potentially be used to scratch that itch!

For me Jak 2 was a huge improvement in terms of scope and sense of wonder I used to get from playing games. It's the third one where things got a bit too on the rails to reel it all in I'm guessing. The first two games felt like such big (epic?) open worlds that you wanted to explore (abeit for different motives perhaps), you still get that sense of being 'lost' in the world.

Nice one! I found it really hard to complete them on vita. Like the stadium races are so laggy in that version and the times are strict enough under the best of circumstances.. And Jak 3 has some broken hoverboard physics I can't get some of the orbs in the open in spargus on th grind rails because they don't work properly (i've tried light jak, slope jumps too). I've noticed almost everyone uses orb glitch (or debug mode now) to complete them and then pretends that they didn't :P

Never saw Tomb Raider as a platformer to be honest, more so an adventure action. I mean sure you jump around and being an acrobatic badass is the entire point of Lara's character, but where Mario and Crash were all about fluid free flowing controls and constantly being on the move, Tomb Raider, with its tank controls and more emphasis on exploration, was more about carefully planning your route ahead. So no, while jumping on platforms is an elements, I wouldn't call TR a platformer.

I forgot if it was one of your videos, Did You Gaming's or Guru Larry's but regarding Jak X and the memory card glitch, Naughty Dog was running low on time and didn't make sure that the game was "optimized" for all 7 models of PS2. They tested out on most "fat" models and only 1 "slim".... well, a friend of mine had one of the "faulty fat" and ended up losing all of his saves on his memory card, while I got one of bad slim. "Fortunately for me", it just affected the Jak X save and not the others, but the game would constantly freeze and crash especially during the auto-saves, meaning that I couldn't play the game for long as it would corrupt the save everytime in the process.
