Good informative review. I purchased the LP1 pro first then later invested in the PL2 variant. While impressed no end with the LP2's desktop engraving performance for it's small footprint, it's not as genuinely portable as the LP1 pro variant, primarily because it requires a bayonet type, not USB 5v power connector. And is not supplied with an appropriate lead for powering via a standard USB power bank unlike the LP1. I also purchased the brass gnarled rollers and like you found they constantly slipped and ruined the engraving. However, instead of adding elastic bands to the item, I disassembled the rollers, cut grooves into the ends of each brass roller and inserted rubber o-rings at each end. They've not slipped once since. 👍😉

Is there a way to engrave fingerprints with the these machines? I'm starting a permanent jewelry business and want to use it for fingerprints and initials, etc. If so, how am I able to do it? Is there an app I have to download to get the fingerprint to transfer it over?
@robdewberry258729 күн бұрын
Really depends on how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go… get a detective kit or ink pad, make fingerprints, take a digital photo of them, upload that image to the laser engraver from your phone and crop where needed and then just laser engrave that b&w fingerprint image using the engraver. I’m sure there are much more expensive ways to do it, but I doubt the results are that much greater.

Wish I had the Budget for the LP4, but I think the LP3 is going to have to be my choice of tool. I'm mainly looking to engrave different metals, so the LP2 isn't the preferred choice going by the video, and the ability to cut thin wood stock is also handy.

Thanks for the great video. I'm looking to buy my first laser etcher. I was wondering if it possible to seamlessly stich etchings if that's a thing? so etch part of an image then move the machine to etch the section next to it, much like you can get image stichers to create 360 scenes. essentially making an infinite work surface.

Hi James, good video! Quick question here: I am interested into using it for metal, stainless steel and similar rings in particular. For this material I understood it will etch it, but not really engrave it. Question is, does the machine generates any sort of residue that we need to vacuum later? I have pets around and I want to ensure no residue is generated that I have to worry about, or otherwise ensure to isolate the area with the the container box as the brand also offers. Cheers!
@JamesBiggar11 ай бұрын
Thanks. True, the IR laser will etch and mark metal and plastic (ie score and discolour), but not engrave it (remove material). You will need ventilation depending on the materials that you're working with, specifically any coatings or paint that's on the material. Bare metal isn't usually an issue, but fumes are generated when coatings are involved. If you want to actually engrave into metals, check out my channel for another option that I featured recently.

Hi James, Questions to ask I have a horse halter business and add a Ritchie dual colored tag for ID. Would this laser the LP2 make these kind of tags? Ritchie dual colored tag.
@JamesBiggar10 ай бұрын
Not for plastic, no. Diode lasers don't work well with any plastics other than black acrylic. You would need either the LP3 or LP4 which have the IR laser for etching metals and plastics. Bear in mind that I said etching and not engraving. The IR laser is only 2W so you can't do any cutting or engraving (ie remove material). Etching just lightly scores and discolors the surface (black acrylic turns white/grey, for ex, white turns black/grey, etc). It's more durable than paint, but not as permanent as actually removing material. The multi-layered plastic Ritchie cow tags are really meant for engraving with a rotary tool like a dremel or cnc router machine so there's no discoloration of the lower layers. If you used an IR laser powerful enough to engrave a yellow on black tag, for ex, you might end up discoloring the black after burning through the yellow and end up with yellow on white instead. You can get a small cnc machine for the job that's actually cheaper than the LP2, but it's noisier. See one of my latest uploads for an example.

I understand that LP3 can etch more metals and plastic surfaces but is there any advantage of getting LP2 over LP3 other than price? Is LP3 the better machine?
@JamesBiggar Жыл бұрын
They're different machines that work different materials that the other can't (covered in the video). LP2 is a 5W blue diode. LP3 is a 2W IR. Two different lasers with different wavelengths. One is mostly for organic materials, the other is not. The only metal that the LP2 can etch is stainless steel or coated (ie painted, anodized) metals. The LP3 can etch all metals, bare or coated. One isn't any better than the other in general, only in terms of what projects you intend to make and what materials you expect to make them with. LP2 is good for general hobby crafts and woodworking. LP3 is better suited for a jeweler's shop, for example. LP4 does it all.

what is the depth of the etch? let say if I was engraving on plastic how deep can I go without cutting all the way through the material?
@JamesBiggar Жыл бұрын
Depends on what laser you're referring to and what your power and speed settings are. Blue diode can cut through dark plastic, engrave it to a desired depth or just mark it, but it can't work light/clear plastic, and it's really only good for acrylic (other types of plastic can just melt or catch fire as opposed to vaporize under the laser like they should). IR can mark/etch almost any metal or plastic, ie either discolors (low power) and/or lightly scores the surface (high power). LP2 has 5W diode. LP3 has 2W IR. The LP4 has both lasers - 10W diode and 2W IR.

@JamesBiggar5 ай бұрын
You will need ventilation (use next to an open window with a small fan is fine) and they will produce noise. How much depends on the power level for the job and how hard the cooling fans need to work. The IR laser is the quietest. The diode laser in the LP4 is the loudest at max power. Expect anywhere from 40-70 db. They're not really loud, pretty tolerable imo but some people can be fussy and annoyed easily. You would probably need to work something out with your roommates when they're home even if they're generally decent people, just to say you did and avoid annoying someone on a bad day, or use it when they're not around.

Hi, I am wondering how this will do with longer designs all the way around a tumbler that does not have the same width from top to bottom.
@JamesBiggar Жыл бұрын
Should work fine as long as the surface isn't too curved. Surfaces with deep curves/contours require a laser with a motorized z axis to adjust the focal point accordingly as the laser moves. If the tumbler is just angled from top to bottom and the angle isn't too extreme and the surface is reasonably straight, then just use the tail stock for the chuck rotary attachment to angle the smaller end higher so that the top side is parallel to the base and remains that way as the chuck spins. I can't recommend attempting it with the roller rotaries, though. Maybe wrap some rubber bands around the smaller end, but I've only etched straight objects on the rollers so I can't say how they would work. The chuck rotary works great, though.

Can the LP 2 engrave letters into exhaust piping which is made of steel, but can be aluminized steel tubing, or stainless steel? I need an engraver that I can hold in various upward angles.
@JamesBiggar Жыл бұрын
Only stainless, and bare in mind that it only etches the surface, it doesn't engrave. Etching involves melting the surface just enough to cause a raised texture, while oxidizing it (which produces the color). Engraving is just as it sounds - removing material to create a groove. Since an exhaust pipe is prone to discoloring when it heats up for the same reason the laser would color it, anything you etch into it might disappear sooner than later, so I would opt for engraving instead of etching. For that you need a fiber laser, and there are portable fiber laser's available. I can't name them here for obvious reasons, but they shouldn't be too hard to find. These LP lasers are IR and blue diode.

The IR laser etches (ie scores/discolors) metal and plastics. The diode laser engraves wood, leather, stone, and other natural/organic materials (ie remove material), and etches stainless steel but does not work on any other metal without marking agents. LP2 is diode, LP3 is IR, LP4 has both. If you want to do 2.5D or 3D engraving in metal, check out my channel for other galvo fiber laser options that do exactly that.
