We forget about all the trials and troubles we went through back then and only remember the good times. I don't know how old you are but think of what all you have learned and seen in the last 30-40 years. Think of all the people you met in that time. I was a teen metalhead in '86 when this song was new. But I dug pop music too, and this video always made me feel good. Janet's music and image had a way of reaching people that may not have naturally gravitated to this style. I even saw her live in '93, one of the best shows I've ever seen. God I miss this era. Only about 3 edits...when they say smile and the men appear on steps...when she goes through the door and maybe one more when she slides down the stairwell and lands. But even though there are edits, it actually was shot in ONE take them they re did a few to smoothen them out.

This is such a striking difference between the 1960s-90s and today. The potential of new acts to reach beyond the border of their genre, their core fans, and impact people who are into quite different kinds of music - whether those people are fans or musicians - that ability has practically disappeared. And it's not because "today's musicians and artists are so much worse" but because the methods of the industry, the channels of markering of today, pretty much block that kind of wide, genre-crossing breakthrough, and the mixing of different backgrounds.
@fuzzo732 жыл бұрын
@@louise_rose I agree, though there are perhaps a few exceptions. Lady Gaga has a lot of respect and genuine fans in the rock and heavy metal community, myself included. Some of them might be afraid to admit it, lol. I know there are other examples but that one jumps out.
@louise_rose2 жыл бұрын
@@fuzzo73 Also, this is a nice homage to old Hollywood musicals. The instrumentation is modern soul/r'n'b of course, but the settings, the Technicolor-style photography, the obvious "studio look" of the set and the entire tone of the film are very reminiscent of the "Singing in the Rain" and "My Fair Lady" era ( I used to watch those classics on TCM) :). Even the song , with a different (orchestral) arrangement wouldn't have needed a lot of rewriting to fit into a 1950s film. Janet was aware of this for sure; she invited Cyd Charisse for a well-placed cameo in another video around the same time.

Michael and Janet Jackson kind of ruled the 80s music scene in my opinion. The mere fact that their fans weren't just Black folk, but people of all races, nationalities, and colors, made it bangin'!

I am so glad that I was young and in grade school when this song came out and was all over the radio because it captured the essence of innocence, joy, happiness of that time and era. I could sense this song was about the purity of love even as a child who wouldn't know how to articulate that through words which goes to show that Janet's music was so impactful in feeling to young, impressionable ears

Music that makes me genuinely smile. Why doesn't pop music do that today? It's catchy and light hearted. No vulgar language. Today's music is too serious, hostile, and crude.

I know it'd been a while since I'd heard it,but I remembered it starting without that woodpecker-like sound at the beginning,just the piano-ish two-note sound,then the bass...until the other synths and percussion kicked in,followed by Janet's vocal.

Not just the dancers up front, even the folks in the background have their own characters and dance moves. The sailors meeting up with the streetwalkers is a nice touch. Plus a few older characters to make a full neighborhood. Although done to appear like one long shot you can see the breaks if you look. The cameraman saying Smile, Janet sliding down the railing

This is one of my favorite Janet songs and for me one word and emotion sums it up. Joy. This video always seemed like so much fun and the spirit of Janet Jackson is signified in it. This song sounds like her megawatt smile. She sings with happiness and exuberance and it is this sound that is invoked in her trademark hits. Years later you will hear it on "Escapade", "Alright", "Miss You Much", "Because of Love", "You Want This", "Go Deep", "Together Again", "All For You", "Island Life", "What's Ur Name", right on up to "Dammn Baby." Consistency in her craft is what makes her a true legend and a real artist. This is why she can still make hits today. Her talent, recognition and artistry goes way beyond her famous last name and family.
