Just discovered Margaret Lockwood.......watching movies from the 40's (British) with Margaret Lockwood. She was so beautiful and was really good in this role. She outsmarted that mean old man.

Love seeing a woman in a leadership role that shows her resourcefulness, strength, character, confidence, who knows her own heart and mind not succumbing to the fear of the tyranny of a man's 'spoiled child' temper tantrums.

Maybe in those days you could get away with marrying someone and not sleeping with them, but not these days. You can divorce some one for that, alienation of affection.
@florarix22105 жыл бұрын
Many were arranged and married for other reasons than love and romance. They usually had their romantic encounters on the side. If the husband did sleep with the wife, it was usually just to produce an heir. This has been going on for centuries, unfortunately. Got to keep the money and the power in the ' right ' hands.
@manichairdo63465 жыл бұрын
No, even in those day non consummation of marriage could legally be annulled. Other causes for divorce were, having lied and deceived someone in order to manipulate into marriage and other deceptions that came to light.

I think this is a novel by Nora. Lofts...
@danacarpender22875 жыл бұрын
Yes, by Norah Lofts. Softened quite a bit. Among other things, the situation at the girls' school was that Miss Twysdale was a lesbian, in love with... What's her name, the head of the school, and desperately jealous of the attention she paid to Jassy. Plus the Hollywood. Happy Ending was just that.

@Iloveflowers20242 жыл бұрын
"too" distracting, Really? you can't get past it and just follow the actual story and the actors performing? Stage performances in live theatres have painted backgrounds so why is the movie a problem? It's just art and entertainment. As long as people are acting and creating a story then what does it matter? Many of the movies back then used painted backdrops in certain scenes. To me it's kind of fun to notice and pick out and even a little funny sometimes. It is part of movie history and very common. It is a shame you'll dismiss really good films just because of what's in the background. Next you'll say you can't watch silent movies because there's no sound. Or you can't watch black and white movies because there's no color.

Great old trashy dumb-fun Gainsborough bodice-ripper mellerdrammer, not to be confused with either quality, good film-making or intelligence, as the reviews of the day were quick to point out (it was panned: look it up), but I'm a softie for REAL Technicolor (also not to be confused with anything colorized)....and this was the only Gainsborough job to be photographed in Technicolor. And it has Margaret Lockwood (albeit in a badly written character, with a terrible makeup job and about a decade to old for the role). And about as close to Dickens as Li'l Abner is to Shakespeare, but so what? Great crap. And it made money. Presumably the matinee ladies of the day swooned over the story.
