Slipknot’s drummer story is remarkably similar to Metallica’s bassist story: - An irreplaceable legendary original member who tragically passed away too young, leaving an incredibly legacy. (Cliff Burton/Joey Jordison) - A fan-favorite who was adored by fans yet never really treated fairly by the band, filling impossible shoes and forever remaining in the original’s shadow. (Jason Newstead/Jay Weinberg) - A career musician who’s talent is far beyond the band itself and their involvement brings new life and will see them into retirement. (Robert Trujillo/Eloy Casagrande)

For me personally Jay Weinberg stepped in to fill in some very big shoes after Joey left and I respect what he has done in keeping the metal machine that is Slipknot running until they found the drummer that could bring the original energy and drive that Joey brought into the band from its inception till the day he left. Jay was the drummer who punched well above his weight class in keeping things going after Joey Jordinson and I deeply respect him for it. NOTE: It's really not about Jay Weinberg being the best drummer for Slipknot. Of course, he was no Joey Jordinson or Eloy Casagrande. He stepped in to keep the Slipknot machine running after Joey until they brought in Eloy. And as a Slipknot fan, I thank him (Jay) for it. Some of you mofos are just downright bitter and vitriolic. You can’t really compare the 2. Eloy is just on another level. He makes Unsainted sound so brutal since he plays it on the right tempo. Unlike Jay who always rushes the songs and has sloppy double bass. No wonder Slipknot fired him. Eloy got them back their groove. Sorry Jay fans. Just telling the truth.

Not to diss Eloy whatsoever because he's killing it, but I think this is one of those rare instances I prefer Jay's take. The parts he wrote had a perfect balance that really helped highlight the song. Eloy's take adds a bit too many flourishes that overpower the song. Edit: On second thought... After reading the lyrics more closely, yeah Eloy's flourishes there make a lot more sense and definitely add to something. The crazy fill right after Corey screams, "Reaching out for the hand of God | But did you think you'd shake your own?" really makes sense. That's a powerful line. It's almost as if something broke inside the narrator of the song and Eloy's capturing that. I think I'm just partial to Jay's because it's the first song that got me into Slipknot

All this comparison talk is kind of interesting. Eloy is technically a better player. But let’s reserve our judgment until they start making music. Eloy's writing is a known quantity, tho - just listen to Sepultura's Quadra. It spans the whole spectrum of sounds Sepultura had through their career, from death metal through thrash to groove. The drumming of that album is beastly from start to end, and all of it in service of the songs. Complex yet tasteful parts, simple when needed, super intricate when called for. And groovy AF.

@@NemeanIndustries I do think Jay's simplicity helps aid the song a lot, though. Doing a lot of fills isn't always a good thing for the music. (Not saying what Eloy is doing is bad and I like the flourishes where he added them, but generally speaking, there's a time and place for fills like that.)
