I think it is just a problem with semantics. Although Van Damme speaks English, his native language is French, so there probably was a problem with translating what he meant to say. I think the proper term he should have used is leverage not power. By raising your knee above your foot you get better leverage to generate power from the hip and project it thru your knees.

I am a grown woman and I have never taken martial arts (apart from kick boxing aerobics) but have always had a deep interest in it. I learned something from this video. The power is in the knee. Keeping the knee high, blocking. I loved this short lesson, and it's really too bad that the boy was not very responsive, but he will never forget this day. JCVD is a class act from the inside out. What a beautiful man, and a really good actor. He has evolved and his theatrical work is inspiring. I have been a fan since the first film released in the USA, I loved many of his movies, Bloodsport was epic, Lion Heart was a beautiful film, but my favorite was Double Impact. I know a lot of people will disagree, but I liked the story, I thought it was ingenious, entertaining, and a challenge for an actor to play 2 characters. What could be better than double Van Damme? Anyway, I love you JCVD. Je vous aime beaucoup, Vous êtes le package complet.

Hilarious, loved every second. I haven't ever commented on YT before, believe it or not, but I just HAD to right now. I used to do martial arts and the weak looking kick the kid does is a TKD kick, with the knee brought right up from the floor, and the instep turned at around 45 degrees (i.e. not fully turned). The correction from Van Damme is to make a Karate kick (roundhouse) with the knee brought up first. It's a stylistic difference and Van Damme didn't realise this! Funnay!
