This is the Eurovision song I can't get out of my head. If you'd asked me to make a list of top 3, I wouldn't have picked this one as the ear-worm, but the "they poisoned your ground" and "your rhythm is rebellion" will NOT leave my brain. It probably helps that the lyrics on this one are quality. Song on repeat!
@dutchafrikaner12042 жыл бұрын
He sings in Sranantongo. One of the many languages in Suriname (and the Netherlands). Wether this is the reason why Macrooy had such a low score, I don't know. Personally I like the song and it shows that Suriname and the Netherlands are actually pretty close countries. (About ⅔ of all Surinamers live in the Netherlands because back in the day, most Surinamers didn't want independence.)
@TheReviewDesk3 жыл бұрын
To whoever's wondering: he's singing in English and Sranan Tongo, the language of Suriname. He's saying yu no man broko mi, which is Surinamese for you can't break me.

i think it's very powerful how jeangu has chosen to take a risk twice with his songs. i feel that both grow and this song are very personal and express hope and optimism. they're very different from each other, but i actually like them both p much equally. they just have their own unique vibes. perhaps too unique for eurovision, but that's all right! host countries rarely win twice in a row, so taking the chance to put out something close to your heart is a great way to make use of that certified spot in the finals

@@Th3Snipe Because the song is l i t e r a l l y about the effects of colonialism and how many black people were forced to abandon their cultures when they were taken. Their names, religions. It has everything to do with it, and it is beautiful to create such a powerful song of resilience.

@@Th3Snipe because it might be directed at the experience of people of color, but even ** I **, a classic white american man can find incredible liberation in it's message. @KathrynSrce37193 жыл бұрын
When I heard this the first time, I knew he said something like that but didn't know how to write it. And, knowing that he's from Suriname, I thought that this might be in one of their languages. It was definitely not Dutch. Some people still think that he says "you don't want broccoli" though. Sorry if you can't unhear that now.
@SuperPassionflower3 жыл бұрын
@@KathrynSrce3719 first time my son and I (and we have no Surinam ties btw) heard it we also immediately took it for "you don't want broccoli" and to be honest, Jeangu realised this would probably happen and it does make him smile. The phenomenon itself has become wellknown in NL as "mama appelsap"-moment when years ago a Dutch dj Timur Perlin misheard a line in Michael Jackson's "wanna be starting something" ('mama se mama sa ma ma coo sa', he heard 'mama say mama sa mama appelsap')
@KathrynSrce37193 жыл бұрын
@@SuperPassionflower Lol yeah and when that happens, it's hard to unhear. Hopefully Jeangu thought "oh wow, adding "yu no man broko mi" to the song sounds like "you don't want broccoli." But I'll keep it anyway because it's the language of where I'm from." So he probably will smile at the fact that many of us misheard that for sure.

For people who are saying: we want some songs who promote european culture and not culture from another countries/ continents. As I understood this artist is from Suriname, an ex dutch colony so this sound is a part of European culture as african sounds as many european countries had in the past african colonies as France/ germany/ Holland/ Portugal etc... ( Suriname is in America we know it but I am speaking in general view of Europe history). So I am so glad that this artist make us know or refresh memory of some european people who seems to forget their own history and horrible part of history because slavery/ colonization was no joke! This song is a very good choice! Thank you Holland!
