I appreciate how much attention to detail to paid to this video and the jeep. I know from my own projects that covering everything would make the video many hours long. You hit key bullet points and I feel like people that have good mechanical inclination can ascertain just about all of what actually went into it. Rock crawler or overlander, built jeeps are always respected when done right!

I appreciate that. This was an overwhelming project. Definitely my most in depth project so far on this jeep. Feels good though. I did another updated video the other week. I go into depth on the adapter kit because after this video it nearly destroyed my transmission. I am running a doomsday diesel adapter kit now

This is insanely cool. I am a bit late to the party, but this has to be one of the cleanest, best swaps I have seen. I would love to do something like this, but I am afraid it is above my level. I may end up just going with a Golens 4.6 stroker. Regardless, great project! Thumbs up!

I did the same swap in my tj. I went with a mercedes4x4diesel adapter and was a little underwhelmed with the instructions (or lack thereof) and the quality of the materials. In 3 years and maybe a couple thousand miles, I’ve been through three pilot bushings. The engine also feels very unusually...shakey when revved up. Not like other on617’s I’ve driven. I see doomsday diesel has a better quality kit and a thicker adapter which brings the trans back a bit. Your swap looks terrific and I can really appreciate the work that you put into this. This inspired me to get back at it

Thank you for making this video! Because I've been going back and forth a about either a mild built 318 v8 or do a 5 cylinder mercedes diesel engine. Its for a 88 Dakota.. ( wich they did not ever put a v8 in those trucks, the v8 ones where 1990 and onward and had a different front end/radiator support and frame/ mounts are all different) the trucks built 86-89 where shorter in the engine bay meant to fit the LA v6. My saving grace is that the truck has a jeep 5 speed transmission in it and transfer case wich opens me up to any adapters for the jeep to mercedes conversion (yes I have a welder and can fabricate this truck to the end of the earth and back including making my own oil pan thats not a issue) but its nice that I can order the adapter parts, and just make mounts. Good information so far on the little details to think about. All good bush vehicles are diesel, thats all I know for certain that and the old Benz engines were built very well.

Technically they did in the 89 Shelby Dakota. All they did to fit it was remove the mechanical fan for an electric one.

So. Just curious if you’d admired the “Black Smoke Racing” drift cars” Mercedes 123 and 124 wagons? OM606 engines are crazy sturdy. I’m had several with 300K +(miles)that ran like new. I’m wondering how you get through PA inspection/emissions without a functioning OBD2? I too live in Northeast. PA

ive had to rework and build a 100% custom rear sump pan, and a pickup to make use of the pickup. i have built a number of 4.5-4.7l jeep inline 6 strokers. they really, really do a good job putting the basic 4.0 ho to shame. on adding the lift, look into the stock pickup 8 lug front and rear GM axles, theyre commonly swapped out. the stock limited slip is junk, but stock gearing was 4.56 so itll take to tall tires well. im following.

Start filtering wvo and wmo. Save yourself at the pump by running a 50/50 mix. 50 filtered waste oils and 50 diesel. If you run a hose in hose (coolant heated fuel lines) with a coolant heated hot stick in the fuel tank and a heated fuel filter. You can run straight veg oil year round. Just a thought.
@KeystoneCarry
@KeystoneCarry 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly WVO doesn't appeal to me at all. It causes so many issues over time and diesel is cheap in bulk and plentiful. I'm going to focus more on overlanding modifications than veggie oil, at least for now
@bladenrexroth2555
@bladenrexroth2555 5 жыл бұрын
@@KeystoneCarry I've been running it in an old 6.2 diesel CUCV for 8 years. 20 gallon diesel tank, 42 gallon heated waste fluid tank and a 200 gallon bulk bed mounted tank with a 150 gph centrifuge system. When it comes to overlanding? It's a stress relief to not need to worry about where to fill up or how frequently you need to fill up. Meaning to explore more, travel further distances without letting your tank determine your trip. Took a trip from Pennsylvania to Florida and from Florida to Colorado and still had roughly 45 gallons in the bulk tank. Averaged 17 mpg pulling a 19 foot camper.

In the UK the Jeep Cherokee XJ came with an option of 2.5 litre turbo diesel from VM motors Italy, the WG, grand Cherokee was launched with the truly awful 3.1 VM TD, 5 cylinder all noise and smoke, after 2 years jeep switched to the Mercedes 2.7 5 cylinder cdi engine, and later the 3.0 v6 cdi merc engine, the VM engine had individual cylinder heads and would crack heads for a pass time, worked in jeep dealer, replaced hundreds of heads! That said they pulled like a train!

Nice work. The Cummins 4BT would work better in a Landcruiser, as they have deeper engine bays. That gasoline engine radiator is more than big enough for that turbo Diesel engine. The turbo Diesel engine converts more of the fuel energy into kinetic energy, hence less heat is purged to the cooling system.

How do you ever expect to be able to adjust your valves with all of those hoses and stuff going across the top of the valve cover? They need to be adjusted every 12,000 miles. I have an extra 617 out in the garage and was looking for something to put it in. You have done a great job with your swap. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
@KeystoneCarry
@KeystoneCarry 5 жыл бұрын
12,000 miles to me is excessive. I plan to check them every year, but I run high quality oil and this motor is completely rebuilt. I don't anticipate a ton of adjustment being necessary. With that being said, the only hose that impedes removal of the valve cover is the AC high pressure line. The wiring harness can be moved about 6" out of the way. The high pressure line isn't an issue: I simply remove the AC compressor and set aside with the lines attached. I have had the valve cover off in the jeep multiple times. It does take some extra work, but it is still very doable. Thank you!

On a cherokee you just need to trick the cam sensor signal. I sent signal from the crank sensor to the wire that feeds the computer cam sensor signal. Boom! Tach will work as it should. People WAY overcomplicate their tachs on cherokees. I'm not sure about a ranger.

Thumbs up. I have never seen such a clean motor swap. You've done the most beautiful and smart job. By saying smart I mean from engineering point of view. Everything was done with extreme precision and thought after. I wish this world had more people like you working in mechanic shops but unfortunately it is mostly dirty lazy and careless disappointment with limited mindset. You have done something that most of those so called professionals would say impossible. Now I'm going to ask you a question after I expressed what I think about your really nicely done piece of engineering art. What is acceleration is like and I'm not asking time for a quarter mile time or precise 0 to 60 . My question is more about how car responds to right pedal for example when you go for overtake or entering fwy. Did that engine make it quicker. And another question why did you go with such a complicated swap when you could have built stroker out of original 4.0 which would give you 300+hp and close to 400ft/lb of torque and it would be more budget friendly build which also has tons of potential for tuning like supercharger or turbo. You can get even close to 400hp and 450ft/lb with ported head with proper valve train and custom intake and exhaust manifolds .

For the glow plugs why not but a dash surround from Europe or Australia with the diesel lights in and then hook that up to the factory glow plug contoller 662 545 30 32 then it would all be like it came out of the factory

The om617 is reliable, bullet proof, but underpowered. I had an 85 merc w123 turbo diesel so I should know, best engine I had cuz of simplicity but also slowest.

I haven't seen a production kit for rear sump. One of my friends made a custom rear sump though.

I bought some of these headlights for my 1999 XJ from Amazon in 2018. So far they are performing very well. Hello, how did you get the tachometer signal so that it works with the original tachometer?🤨

The welds on your oil pan look a bit rough, you welded a little hot. Maybe 5 volts lower it would of looked better. Nice big though and major props

I know this is not related to your diesel swap, but could you give some info on your rock slider setup? I am interested in doing the same thing with the rocker sliders.

Great video. Are you closer to the east or west side of the state? Jeff Daniels in Harleysville (suburbs outside Philadelphia) seems like the closest diesel swap shop in the northeast. Would love to do a 4BT swap without getting in over my head.

Did you balance the flywheel? If you didnt, how did you determine you didnt have too? If ya did balance it, what was the process?
@KeystoneCarry
@KeystoneCarry 5 жыл бұрын
Mine is neutral balanced. I got "lucky" with this motor. For whatever reason however this one was balanced at the factory resulted in the mercedes flywheel being a neutral balance. Definitely made my life easier. The correct way is to mark the stock flywheel and stock crank location with a punch. Remove stock flywheel and bring your flywheel and the stock one to a machine shop. have them "match balance" the two as a pair. The result should be that your jeep flywheel matches the balance of the stock one.

The million dollar question is what did you do with the 4.0? I wish jeep would put a 4 cylinder diesel I the jeeps. A European diesel engine or Australian. My 96 Cherokee needs a motor not sure which way to go $ is the issue. Sweet ride
@KeystoneCarry
@KeystoneCarry 5 жыл бұрын
I sold the 4.0 after I got my jeep running and driving. Cheapest option is replacing your motor with the same model engine.
