This wasn't a bad job. Total time is a couple hours and that included messing with my new press. Need a good slide hammer and access to a press. (Amazon- OTC 4579 9-way slide hammer). I highly recommend, it is a high quality tool and not terribly expensive.
I used a 20 ton HF press, worked great. If you don't have a press, take the axle to any auto center, they will probably do it for $20 or nothing at all. Checked the rear differential, it was really low. Must have lost majority of the oil in the case. I have only about 10K on the oil in there, once the seal goes, the synthetic oil I used went in a hurry.

Thanks for posting. My Grand Cherokee Limited is leaking like crazy. I have it taken apart now. Waiting for parts. Without your video I couldn't have done this. I'm not much of a mechanic but with your video I think I can do it. Thanks.

Thank you man, glad I helped. I'm not much of a mechanic either, I usually do a little research first and then jump in. I'm thinking of doing a transfer case rebuild next, but have to figure out how I'll get to work for a few days in case! Most of these things I've never done before, I video them and hopefully people learn from me or from my mistakes. Good luck and don't forget to refill the differential.

Hey thanks a lot. You will either see oil on the back side of the brake shield or oil on the inside of the wheel. My rear seal went and I didn't get to it for a few months. What happened was the oil leaked out of the differential and I had next to nothing in the pumpkin. Change them before they really start leaking, its a messy job and will really wreak havoc with rear braking. Slide hammer I got off amazon and it was a beast!

Mine is a 2003. The WJ's seem to go through axle seals every 100K. I haven't yet replaced the passenger side rear, its not leaking, but I watch it. Its best to replace as soon as you notice it leaking or prior. Once you start seeing the grease coming through the wheel, you'll have an incredible mess on your hands. And, likely starve the pumpkin of diff oil because driving heats it up and it really starts coming out quick. Thanks for the comment.

I recently started a rear brake job on my WJ when I noticed this exact situation - loads of grease around everything. I wasn't prepared for changing out the axle seals so I just cleaned everything up (no small job in itself) and put it all back together and started some research on whether or not I could tackle this job. This video helps a lot and I think I can handle it, but I don't have a cut-off wheel to get those bearing/race off nor access to a press to put the new ones back on. I guess it's time to go to Harbor Freight! :) Seriously, thanks for the great vid!

Ea. axle typically will have an ID tags on either side of the cover. Mine had two. These metal tags with have axle model, gear ratio, gear oil type/grade, whether its equipped with limited slip differential and required friction modifier. But it may be easier to ID from interweb pictures.

Craig, my 2000 GC is acting up. I have fluid, possibly grease, all over the bottom inside over my rotor. I'm about to be rebuilding the rear differential but my magnet inside the cover plate is filled with very tiny shards of metal. I want to remove and replace the seals and bearings on the axle like you did. Is there only 1 internal seal inside the axle? And what parts did you buy for the job and where?

+Danny Cassada Sure thing. After I watched the video, I think I may have cut the seal part out because my son was talking to me when I was videoing it. I thought I had showed all the parts to the kit sliding each part on then assembling into the hub. Its not difficult, a good hammer puller like the one I got from amazon and a good kit and you just put on the same as you take off. Take some pictures while you do it, it helps when you get called away.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
This is the correct procedure for replacing leaking oil seals in a 2003 Grand Cherokee Dana 35. The rear axle tubes are pressed into the differential, the seals are on the hubs. There isn't much oil in the tube but you can expect some. No, its not bearing grease.

Craig do you know which seal I should use from autozone? One is made by Timken number 2146 however there is also a Duralast #D2146 . The Duralast has an extra seal around the outside which I would think is a better seal, but Timken is the better brand isn't it? Both wheel hub seal pictures can be found at the autozone site. Thanks in advance.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
Timken is the better brand in my opinion and was the one I used. The Duralast may be made by Timken for all I know, sometimes that happens. You'll likely only have to do this job once, my Jeep was 10 years old when I performed this, so the extra seal is nice but probably unnecessary.

@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Eddie, very nice of you to say. On the 44, I'm not sure if there are C clips inside the pumpkin. If there aren't C clips holding the shafts in, then you don't need to drain the pumpkin. Just a note that wasn't covered in the video, check the axle vent tubes if applicable. They can get clogged and allow pressure to build inside the axle, blowing past the seals.

Are the four bolts the only thing holding the axle in or did you have to pull the cover off the differential to pull it out?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 6 жыл бұрын
Acnologia I didn’t have to pull the cover of the rear differential and remove the C clip for the axle to pull out. It came right out. Cherokee’s may require pulling the clips with certain Dana rear ends, but mine wasn’t one of them. It was really easy. I did have to refill the rear end, it was empty because the seal failed and lost all oil.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 11 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a wheel bearing and bad oil seals to me. You'll know when you take off the wheel if the grease is all over the brake backing plate and caliper as it gets flung out when driving. If not careful your differential oil will all flow out as it heats up. You likely have C-clips holding your axles in place, so make sure you look to see what axle you have.

Ok I had my left rear axle seal was leaking as yours is. I decided to replace the bearings and seals on both sides so that they would be new and I wouldnt have to worry about them. about a month later the opposite side started leaking even though it was BRAND NEW! I pulled the axle again to go buy a new bearing and seal again. when I pulled the axle out I noticed that I was able to slide the bearing up and down a little bit on the axle shaft, I did think that this was right. I took it to a guy who runs his own machine shop and he told me that was ok and he pressed the new bearing and seal on the same way. When I put the axle back in with the new bearing I noticed that the new side and the old side have slight in and out play and makes a "clunk" noise when you pull/push on it even though its a brand new bearing! Did the guy at the machine shop press my bearing on wrong or do I have another problem within my diff?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 7 жыл бұрын
+CoH xUnLoaDz98 No I think you are okay. The seal does the work, so the sealing surfaces must be free of rust and corrosion. If there is a small steel hose or tube coming from the axle tube, that should be clear so that pressure in the axle is allowed to equalize. The bearings are held in by the bearing races so expect some movement of the bearing. I would consider any leaking due to corrosion on the axle shaft and hub as well as new gear oil that is thinner. If you had squeaking, sloppiness and noise that's different. Clean up the seal surfaces and you should be good.

■Need To Know■ Dana 44A does not have C clips that retain the axle shafts. But Dana 35C does hence the "C". Some ZJs and WJs came with one or the other. Not knowing this could be disastrous. Heads Up all.

Does a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee rear axle pull out the same way, using a slide hammer and not having to remove the rear diff. cover ?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 3 жыл бұрын
You need to check your Dana rear axle. If you have a C, there is a clip inside. Mine was an open diff (can't remember sold it in 2013 Dana 35 maybe?) but I had no C clip holding the axles. Now my 2001 Cherokee did have clips, but this 2003 did not, came out really easy I remember. And hey if you have clips, you'll know it, the axles come out without a lot of effort. Taking that rear off is easy and then you have a good excuse to refill the rear end.

+DillonOnTheGo This GC was a 2003. I traded it in a couple years ago for a 2014 GC Limited with a Hemi. Check the hub. Would have to really hammer something hard to bend an axle that is in a tube, like sliding into a curb or something... But yes, this is the exact way to change it and it is easy. Just get some Never Seize and coat all the bolts you put back. That way when you do a brake job or tire rotation or seal kit, you can get them out.

I traded that Jeep in 2013 for my 2014 GC, but if I recall that should be no C clips even for 2wd. The C doesn't stand for C clip btw. And there are dana 35's with and with out c clips. The C stands for custom. The quickest and easiest way to tell if you have c clips (besides removing the diff cover) is checking to see if you have a retaining plate. It's either one or the other. But you wont have both. If you have 4 bolts holding the axle in then you have no c clips. If nothing is holding the axle in you have c clips. If you have c clips and you break an axle your wheel will peace out

A slide hammer is the tool to use when you can't use a puller or get leverage behind it. I don't know another way to get the shaft out, its a tight fit. A good heavy slide does it so easy. If you have an Autozone near you, they rent these things for cheap.

my 2005 jeep grand Cherokee right rear axle seal has a slight leak. I took it to the dodge dealership for cost of repair. They told me $150 to replace the seal and bearing but the differential fluid had to be replace also to do the job correctly which brought the total repair up to $500. I don't understand why it cost $350 to replace the differential fluid. I did't think it needed replacing only filled until the grease comes out the seal. What is your opinion. Should I just have the seal and bearing replaced and take it somewhere else to have more differential fluid added.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 9 жыл бұрын
jack ludwig That's a great price for the seal and bearing. Hell, I would have had them do my 2003 GC! My rear axle didn't have C-clips holding the shafts on. Yours might. If that is the case, then they may have to remove the rear differential cover to pull the clips to release the shafts. Then refill. A rear end fluid change is $75 to $100 at a dealer. They just suck the stuff out they don't pull the cover. May want to take it to a small local shop, they usually can get it done cheaper.
@jackludwig912
@jackludwig912 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Craig for your response. I decided to take it to the dealer for the service. I checked how much the bearing and seal plus clamp and it was $172 so the price to change was reasonable. The $150 they quoted earlier was an error. With the differential fluid change the total bill comes to $500. I had the differential fluids changed in 2009 and it cost me $180 so I think the dealer is giving me a fair price.

i did it excactly how you did yours here, i ended up with rubbing noise when i put everything back together, would you be able to help?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
That could be a lot of things. If you put the axle, races and bearings in correctly, tightening the lugs in the back of the plate will pull it in tight. I'd check the brake and caliper and make sure that is correct and there isn't any slop. Next make sure you have fluid in the differential- mine was empty from it leaking out the bad seal.
@contrerasedgar52
@contrerasedgar52 10 жыл бұрын
Craig Arndt i replaced the rotors that seemed to help. i hear a light screeching sound which from what hear is because everything is brand new..and yes i added new fluid to differential.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
Screeching doesn't sound good, although it could still be a brake issue. If there are new pads and rotors and anti squeal spray on the backs of the pads, you shouldn't get any squealing. If it doesn't sound right or you aren't sure about it, have it looked at.

What's a reasonable amount to pay for this work if you have it done in a shop?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 7 жыл бұрын
David Tyler I wouldn't know the answer to that. It depends on the individual and how much they want to spend. It's not difficult so it shouldn't be more than 2 hours for a professional, but you could ask a shop how long to replace the seals and get an estimate.

g/c jeep } got this problem as-well oil seals, near side, my garage put two kits on and its still leaking, even he is pulling his hair out. offside is ok car only done 76.000. what can it be help
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
First thing, I would make sure that the seal surface is not rusted or corroded, mine had some rust which I cleaned up with 400 grit paper so I had a good seal. If all that was done and it still leaked, I'd go to the vent tube. A clogged vent tube will cause pressure to build in the axle, blowing past the seal. Vent tubes are cheap and can be replaced in 10 minutes.

How much differential gear oil did the jeep hold?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 8 жыл бұрын
+Danny Cassada I can't recall, did that repair a few years ago. I would check online or the manual for the proper amount. I remember filling it until it poured out, so I wasn't counting quantity. Couple quart containers is all you'll need.

@CraigArndt

+DillonOnTheGo I doubt it. All those parts, race, bearings, bracket are all pressed onto the shaft. If you take the axle out you replace the seal, you don't want to re-use the seal.

This was a 2003 Jeep GC, Limited. Had the 4.0L straight 6 and the upgraded center diff (not Quadra drive, but had full-time 4wd that you could select with the lever and just leave it there all year), I can't remember what they called it, Select Track maybe... it wasn't the 2wd, 4wd hi/lo... it had 4wd FullTime as an option, which just opened the center diff so you didn't damage the drivelines.

How often do WJ's need this done?
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
Not often. Use good quality parts, these last a long time. Mine was 110K miles and I only did the driver side. Sold Jeep at 140K miles, 3 months ago, passenger side had no leaks on original oil seal. Purchased this Jeep new, 11/2002. I bought a new Jeep GC Limited HEMI, 2014.
@58msd
@58msd 10 жыл бұрын
Craig Arndt The reason I asked because I had drivers side done at 89,000 and again at approx 140,000. Passenger side at 150,000 -done once. WJ 1999 has about 154,000 SInce its a 1999 just about everything has been replaced. Even though is 10,000/year garage queen.
@CraigArndt
@CraigArndt 10 жыл бұрын
My passenger side I never changed either, it had 140k when I sold it. It could be parts, it could be the installation, it could be a clogged axle vent line, forcing heated oil to blow past the closest seal... That may be an issue now that I think of it.

It's important to note that you should NOT reuse the four nuts holding the shaft and seals to the axle. Even cleaning the nuts, using locktite can still allow the four nuts to vibrate loose. The nuts are inexpensive through after market like Dorman. The nuts have been discontinued according to Jeep. So for the few extra dollars it costs do NOT reuse the retainer nuts. On the new nuts and retainer bolts it's a good idea to use the locktite.

Tony Chavez The video is self explanatory. It’s not difficult but you will need to have a basic knowledge of the drivetrain and a shop manual is a good idea if you happen to have the Dana rear end with C clips. This video doesn’t address C differentials.
