I sold a Jeep to get a 4runner. The 4 runner is more practical overall and in 2017 the 4runner had more amenities and was comfortable. Obviously the new Wrangler is as comfortable. But a Jeep is a Jeep and nothing compares to that. Today most people who own Jeeps use them like cars. I ended up buying an older Jeep to use as a second vehicle around town.

I thought long and hard between the two when I bought two years ago. I really, really wanted a JKU at the time. However, I had a friend that was really pushing the 4Runner. The more I looked into the 4Runner, the more it started to grow on me. I still really wanted the JKU, I thought it was cooler, knew it was more capable off-road, and I liked the idea of removing the doors. I actually posted on Wrangler Forum to see if anybody had experience between the two, and I actually got a lot of replies saying that for my intended usage of mostly a DD and easier trails, the 4Runner would probably suit my needs better. I'll also add here that I was looking to buy used, and my budget was 25k or under, so that narrowed down my choices of available examples. Right around this time the JL came out, and I liked the changes in the JL so much it kind of ruined the JK for me. However I didn't have 45k to spend on a new JL. So, that pushed me toward the 4Runner, and I found a 2013 Trail with 79k miles on it for 50% of what the new JL would have cost me. Also, when thinking about it, I didn't have any issue buying a 79,000 mile Toyota, even knowing I would put 20 to 25 thousand a year on it, but when I was looking at Jeeps I was limiting my searches for models under 40K miles, haha. After owning the 4Runner for a few years, I still like the practicality of the vehicle, and it does suit my uses. However whenever I see a Jeep I always look at it with a twinge of envy, because I think they're much cooler. I also envy the available after market parts and the lower associated costs. I also fully realize that for technical off-roading, the Jeep is way more capable, and also that mods improve it at a higher rate than what they do on a 4Runner. ( example, 3 in of lift on a JL Rubicon lets you run 37's with no problems, three inches of lift on a 4Runner lets you run 33s with some trimming) The one thing I truly dislike about the 4Runner is the drivetrain. They've been running this for 11 years in this generation, and five or six years in the previous generation. I get that it's reliable, but the power delivery is terrible, the engine is noisy, and to me the driving experience is poor because of the lack of low-end torque. For driving around town it's adequate, and off-road as well. But merging on the highway or climbing mountains or steep grades, it just feels very lacking. If I keep it, I plan on keeping it for at least 10 years and bringing it to 300K miles, so the perceived reliability and longevity was a big selling point for me. If anyone were to ask me about it as strictly and on road family car, I wouldn't recommend it. I would point people toward something more like a Highlander. Better on road performance, better tech, better mileage, better handling, and better interior.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
Yeah both the Wrangler and 4Runner offer a lot! Jeep is a bit noise on road and you can tell its at home in the dirt. 4runner is more well rounded. And yeah, a highlander is fantastic for 99% inroad use. Great selection of SUV's these days!

My 4.0 V6 Climbs hills just fine, and has more power than a Jeep. Both SUVs are very capable stock. You don't need 37s to rock crawl and go to Moab. 4Runner is all around more roomy and practical.

Amazing description, we are trying to decide on the 4Runner or Jeep . I want the Sahara but have seen a few reviews that is a terrible daily driver compere to the 4Runner . But I love the way the Jeep looks . I have a friend selling his Sahara with 66k for $26k and the 4 Runner will be a 35k to 45k for a used one in good shape . Am just trying to decide
@trailrunnah88862 жыл бұрын
@@jesuspacheco2769 I would drive them both. The 4Runner may drive a little bit better than the JK Sahara, but compared to something like a Highlander it still drives like a tractor. Also, how much driving do you do? I drive 60 miles a day at least for work, so I wanted something that was a good highway driver. If I just drove around town, or had a significant other with a more comfortable and economical car, I would totally have gotten a Jeep. If you don't drive a ton, I would strongly consider getting the Jeep if that's what you really want. I've had my 4R for 3 years now, and whenever I see a Jeep I still feel that twinge of envy. Also, I don't love my 4Runner, it's just a vehicle to me. Also, under no circumstance do I think use forerunners are worth the money that they're going for. Couple years ago you could get one for 36k new, now they're going for 10K more than that used. Insanity. The current generation 4Runner dates back to 2010, and the engine and transmission date back to 2005.

But if I'm going to be taking the family on a long trip, there's nothing better than a 4Runner. If you care about "serious" offroading, the 4Runner has a locking rear differential at a lower price point than the Wrangler. To get locking differentials on the Wrangler, you have to upgrade to the Rubicon which is considerably more expensive than the TRD 4Runner. Granted, it's one (rear) locking differential on the 4Runner TRD and two on the Jeep Rubicon, but the point still stands.
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
Very good point. But the locking diff isn't the best feature of an off roader. Size, transfer case, weight, articulation all make a huge difference to. We took the Wrangler in its stock form off roading next to my TRD Off Road Tacoma with lift, tires, ect... And the Jeep did everything the same. Better articulation and lighter vehicle gave it fantastic traction in 4x4 and 4low. So the Wrangler in it's base form outperforms the competition stock for stock
@Mudinyeri3 жыл бұрын
@@BrosFOURRSpeed locking differentials make all the difference (See what I did there?) in situations where traction is needed at all four wheels. Sure other things make a difference but in "serious" offroading, you're not likely to find rigs without locking diffs. My point being that your tests demonstrated no real difference between the Wrangler and the 4Runner. (Your tests were pretty mild.) However, if you want to achieve better offroad performance at a lower price point, the 4Runner gets you there.

@@Mudinyeri Jeep wranglers all come with a solid front axle from the factory making it a better off roader by default, for the price or not. Well with a lease you are just wasting money. Completely throwing it away. If you buy the Jeep and finance it, you can at least sell it when you're done. Most people that want a Jeep Wrangler will only buy a Wrangler for the removable roof, doors, and charm. Most people that want a Toyota 4Runner will love the Toyota reliability, but may complain about the outdated Toyota infotainment technology, the outdated 5 speed transmission (c’mon there should be at minimum 6 speeds in 2020), and less fuel efficient outdated Toyota V6's mpg (comapred to the current Honda V6). For those reasons, a more family oriented man/woman may find themselves crosshopping a 4Runner with the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Subaru Ascent, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Passport, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade; just because for many urban and Durban families, those other options will generally be more fuel efficient while also being more comfortable on paved roads and long commutes.

Even the limited edition doesn't come with a power lift gate to my knowledge which is a crying shame for something around 50K but maybe a redesign would change that.

The thing with these 4Runners, is this generation came out in 2010. So when you buy a brand new 4Runner, you're essentially buying a brand new 11 year old vehicle, LOL.

Good comparison, but the 4Runner will last you a lot longer than these Jeep Wranglers so my money would go to the 4Runner
@BrosFOURRSpeed3 жыл бұрын
That is true! It's a trade off between reliability and taking the doors off haha, it's been fun while I've had it, but I won't have it long compared to my Tacoma for the reliability reason!
@davidburkholder73602 жыл бұрын
"A bit of a gap" you say. Looks like a chasm with thick pieces of steel. Poor design. Hard to compare anything to a 4Runner and the TRD will outperform a jeep offroad easily. Also, poorly loaded on both vehicles. Ladder can easily fit in 4Runner with no angle. Done it dozens of times.
@BrosFOURRSpeed2 жыл бұрын
What gap are you talking about? Stock for stock, a Jeep will outperform a Tacoma simply because of no over hang from the bed length. I own a TRD Offroad Tacoma and with the mods it will hang with a jeep, but a stock jeep is very capable. Also depends on the height of the ladder lol
@davidburkholder73602 жыл бұрын
@@BrosFOURRSpeed When you folded down the seats. The gap. Pound for pound stock barely yes. Down the road a ways...not so much. IMO.

Yeah everything heep from '07 - present is garbage. I've never seen a CJ, YJ or TJ on the side of the road. The 4.0 I6 is among the best engines ever!
@donelderjr3 жыл бұрын
@@JeepTJWheelin Exactly, I wrote this up a few months ago and have seen at least 15 Jeeps broken down on the side of the road on my 22 mile RT to work everyday, I just laugh and laugh because the Jeep owners are totally willing to have critical break-downs, constant repairs, spend thousands extra every year just to say "I own a Jeep" - I work with 3 of these owners and they still think it's worth it, they would never own a Toyota even though my 2006 4runner has never had any repairs other than typical maintenance, these are the same people that have TERRIBLE credit, wonder why....
@JeepTJWheelin3 жыл бұрын
@@donelderjr Jeeps, especially 2 door Wranglers and pre Wranglers are very unique in that no other vehicle can be taken off road with that doors off and top down - open air experience. These are certainly not a prototypical dd. At least not the lifted ones. I know several people in my area who own CJ's, YJ's and TJ's that were purposely left stock by the wise. A few have slightly bigger / wider tires but nothing that will alter suspension geometry. And these 4.2L and 4.0L I6 engines are extremely reliable, built to last a lifetime. It's the people who needlessly lift and add unnecessary huge tires that face major trouble, moreso with those '07 - present heeps. Besides routine maintenance, I've only needed to fix the rear main seal and heater core, that's it. And my TJ Rocky Mtn is an '05. Wranglers are definitely toys, never meant for long family trips. We have the wife's Jetta for that. And maybe next year, we'll trade it in for a 4Runner. There's no denying a 4Runner is the superior family vehicle but there's no other vehicle I would want for off roading especially beach/dune wheelin and hitting a good trail than my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn.

The 4Runner didn’t have grass hanging from the bottom, the jeep back window is ugly when open and exposed to any damage while loading cargo, you got caught being bias when guy called you out trying to say you couldn’t really tell there was road noise in a wrangler. Then that guy literally says if you want a more PRACTICAL suv go with the 4Runner at 10:30 on the vid.. which I thought was the comparison but then you go and say they are very similar in this test… 🤦♂️ I almost subscribed lol.
@BrosFOURRSpeed2 жыл бұрын
They are very similar overall like we showed. The Jeep is better off road, but sacrifices the on road characteristics. Its more noisy but not that bad with the hard top. 4runner is much quieter and smoother but not quite as good off road
