When complexities are overlooked and shortcuts are frequently taken, the repercussions are often catastrophic. Now, who bears the brunt of such narcissism, naivete, and hubris?
Renowned economist Jeffrey David Sachs guides us back to a revitalization of a long-forgotten international political culture: diplomacy. Beyond engaging in difficult conversations, diplomacy imparts the wisdom of listening, understanding, and accepting one another to enable judicious action.
Sachs, serving as the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, brings a wealth of experience. His roles as Special Advisor to UN Secretaries-General Kofi Annan (2001-7), Ban Ki-moon (2008-16), and António Guterres (2017-18) underscore his commitment to global cooperation. Furthermore, he is the author and editor of numerous influential books, including three New York Times bestsellers: "The End of Poverty" (2005), "Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet" (2008), and "The Price of Civilization" (2011).
This is the second part of The Shifting World Order Series.

As if China is not building militarized, artificial islands to make claims against its neighboring countries, not to mention its ethnic cleansing of Tibet and the Uyghurs . Jeffrey Sachs, a prominent economist and professor at Columbia University's Center for Sustainable Development, criticizes the United States' pursuit of pushing Ukraine to join NATO, asserting that peace cannot be attained through such actions. Reflecting on his upbringing in Detroit and his academic journey from Harvard to Columbia, Sachs highlights the historical backdrop of global capitalism and European imperialism, underscoring the transition to a multipolar world economy. He laments the US's diplomatic shortcomings, emphasizing the need for greater respect and understanding in international relations. Sachs condemns the militarization of conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, urging for diplomatic resolutions and critiquing the US's role in exacerbating tensions.

Another really great interview here, thanks. Professor Sachs’ unpopular opinions need continued sunlight. The depth of his understanding can’t be ignored, especially since it flies in the face of conventional, thinking in the west. He is so right about the low quality of American diplomacy. I confess that, while it sounds simplistic, I really like his bold suggestion for UN intervention in the Middle East.. Just do it already. Still, I take issue with some of his positions. Of course, Russian influence in Ukraine is Paramount due to history and geography, but Ukraine wants into the west. Sachs says Ukraine will never be in NATO, and this seems rational. But Ukraine in the EU is much more likely and more important. This is what Ukrainians want. Sachs asserts axiomatically that the Americans overthrew the Yankovich government. I am incredulous that the CIA could mobilize these vast throngs of Ukrainian people to throw themselves into the deadly streets, months on end, for this American CIA objective. I mean, incredulous, literally. The professor condemns the war mongering and madness of the renewed AUCKUS activity in the south China Sea. It is as though he assumes China will just rest on its laurels and be chill in the absence of other powers in these international waters. Again, I’m incredulous. This does not remotely match the reality demonstrated by the behaviour of the CCP. The western world has not only strong economic ties in the region, but friends. Don’t forget, similarly, that NATO repeatedly expanded …. because nations want in.

In the 1990’s Gorbachev and Yeltsin expressed a desire to join NATO. In 2000 Putin made overtures about joining NATO. Hard to say exactly why they weren’t allowed. Without a doubt it was partially because of US protracted Cold War victory dance on Russia.

39:14 there was no "anti-russian" regime there. Zelensky actually came to power by claiming he is going to bring peace with Russia. The majority of the population was frustrated about Crimea operation, which totally violated any laws and agreement, but still wanted doing peace.

Lots of misunderstanding about what actually went down. Sachs suggested the US offer Russia the same stabilization fund that they offered Poland, but the US wanted to see Russia crumble and burn and that's what happened. Sachs had/has nothing to do with that policy. Americans have no clue frankly about much, much less what Russians went through in the the 1990's. However bad you imagine it, it's even worse. Gangster state where everyone is dirt poor and everything and everyone is for sale. Putin took Russia from ruination back to a functioning country and major power., then Americans wonder why he's so popular.

@@sts7422Apparently, he tried to lobby for the same kind of financial support to Russia as the one USA provided to Poland, but USA refused. And there ends his advisory role to Yelcin. There were others advisors working together with emerging Russian oligarchy class on dismantling the Russian economy.
