Superman may be the man of steel but the colonel had balls of steel! He'd watched a kryptonian soldier wipe out two fire teams in a matter of seconds and shrug off everything they threw at her. Yes, I believe they took the image off the cover of the Christopher Reeve Superman Collection DVD boxset and blended it into that scene. Many people claim it was unintentional, a coincidence, and cite Snyder's denying it (I bet Snyder did this to keep things ambiguous), but it's clear that Reeve's features appear - the different brow, eyes, thinner nose etc.

@@powerbadpowerbad Interesting and unique take. Of course you have every right to it as the ranking of films is highly subjective. Still, I would venture to say that it is a very distinctive opinion, even among normies, such as yourself. Nobody talks about "Superman Returns" because it is ALSO a bad Superman film, just more so; that breaks cannon, has bad casting (though Routh and Cavill were a good ones), and does damage to the Superman character. ("Superman: The Movie" is still the best movie in its genre, in addition to being the best Superman movie. Hands down.)

26:53 That's how I like to view Man of Steel as its own separate Elseworlds story that answers the question, "What if Superman existed within our real world?" In this reality, without any other superheroes, a superhuman would change the world for the better or the worse, depending on the actions of the individual, world leaders, religious groups, and the overall publics view of him. The actions of Superman in this film shape the world for future heroes; Superman's actions inspire many in this film to reveal themselves to the world. The appearance of Superman gives birth to the Modern Age of Heroes. You hear those same thoughts from Jon Kent throughout this film, denying Clark the chance to reveal himself to the world and become Superman until much later, around the age of 33, when we see him in Man of Steel. Clark Kent never developed his powers throughout his teenage years; he suppressed his abilities and thus lacked any real skill or knowledge on what he could do until much later. Clark only learns he can fly in this film at 33, so he's a late bloomer when put alongside other takes on the character. I'm not the biggest fan of Jon's death in this film; the portrayal of Pa Kent is not my favourite; he comes off as the reverse Uncle Ben, more toxic love than anything else, Wanting to keep his son's identity safe, no idea of his true power and what he can achieve. But I should mention that the Kent's always had different fates across the comics. The Golden Age (1938) origin, Pa and Ma Kent Kent as they were known die of old age when Clark is a young adult, leading him to move to Metropolis and become Superman; Jon even calls Clark Superman before he passes away in his bed. This is the original origin of Superman, later known as Earth-2 Superman, whenever DC introduced a new universe with modernized versions of their characters for the Silver Age known as Earth-1. The Silver Age Earth-1 (1947 to 1986) Kent's caught an "island virus." after going on holiday during Clark High School Graduation and passing away in bed, leaving an 18-year-old Clark to become Superman after a decade as the young Superboy. Superboy is a teenage Clark Kent saving people across Smallville and sometimes beyond, wearing the iconic Superman costume Martha Kent created for him. Also the Kent's were depicted as being younger as well, seem to de-age slightly across every reboot from old couple to around 30 to 40 by the time Clark was a teenager. And, of course, Superman (1978), the first Superman project to only kill off Jon Kent, allows Martha to live in Clark's adulthood, even if she's rarely used in the film. This is maybe the most iconic death, as so many people were introduced to Superman by this film. Film and animation tend to shape what we know about comic book characters more than the actual comics. Movies and animation is far more mainstream, compared to comics. My favourite is the Post-Crisis, New Earth (1986 to 2011) Kent's lived into Clark's Adulthood, seeing him become Superman and guiding him throughout his stories and adventures. A Clark who was also Superboy during his teenage years, developing his powers at a young age like his Earth-1 counterpart. This is explored in Superman: Secret Origin (2009), the definitive origin for Superman. Post Crisis is by far DC's most beloved and iconic era lasting from 1986 to 2011 so it's filled with iconic stories and for me its definitive DC. Side note: New Earth (1986 to 2011) is just the reality born from DC's merging Earth-1, Earth-2 and a few others to create a streamlined universe. This allowed the Golden Age DC heroes to exist alongside their Silverage counterparts while also allowing DC to update origin stories. The Golden Age heroes formed the Justice Society of America during WW2, an active group for decades until it disbanded. Clark and the Kents grew up in a world where they heard stories of the Justice Society, allowing them to relax a little when Clark wanted to use his powers to help people, knowing that he'd be like the heroes of the Golden Age. So they allowed Clark to become Superboy and later embraced him as Superman. The version of the Kents that relates more to this film is the New 52 (2011 to 2015). It was a reality born when DC rebooted again whenever the Flash went back in time and messed everything up. One without the Justice Society of America, so the modern world had never seen anyone like Clark before, similar to Man of Steel the Kents, so Jon tries to tell Clark to keep his powers hidden. Unfortunately, on the night of Clark's High School Prom, the Kents are both killed in a car accident, with Clark unable to save them thanks to never developing his powers. An 18-year-old, Clark grows up without the guidance of the Kents. He becomes a more edgy, brooding, mopey, and angry Superman. He later develops into the Superman we know and loves, with writer Grant Morrison taking on and giving us some good stories. But moving back to the film itself, I'm not the biggest fan of the overall tone. They applied the tone and aesthetic of the Nolan Batman films to Man of Steel. Watching Them side by side, there's zero contrast at all. For me, a Superman film should never blend with a Batman movie. This is something Batman VS Superman suffers from as well. Zack applies the same tone across all his films and characters, but if you like his movies, you'll most likely enjoy his take on Batman, Superman, and the Justice League. I have never liked his take on these characters or his depiction of the world of DC, but I still appreciate it as an Elseworlds story highlighting different takes on these characters. But yeah, this film's take on Superman is very much Zack Snyder's Superman, so not everyone will agree with his take on the character or the greater DC universe going into Batman vs. Superman and Zack Snyder's Justice League. But I view these films as Elseworld stories. In that case, I enjoy them more than a universe trying to capture the spirit and heart of the DC Animated Universe or the more hopeful and inspirational Superman stories across the decades.

Zod is played by Michael Shannon. He's criminally underrated and should be a huge draw alone but typically is a "second billing" actor. He is easily one of the best contemporary actors working IMHO. Anyone unfamiliar or unconvinced I can think of two films off hand he's phenomenal in. Nocturnal Animals and Take Shelter. I know when this film came out, a lot of people had issues with the destruction in this film, with most of the people complaining that it was all Superman's fault, which is BS. I think the main issue most people had with this movie was that it wasn't the type of Superman film that many were expecting, which is why it got a lot of backlash. I've been a superman fan for years, and I think the destruction works because if you're trying to make a grounded realistic superman film like "Man of Steel" was aiming for, then it would literally be next to impossible for Superman to stop an entire Kryptonian army that were genetically designed since birth to be soldiers, from hurting people or causing destruction on Earth. That wouldn't be realistic. The only reason the Christopher Reeves Superman 2 film got away with keep the colateral damage down was because in spite the story being taken more seriously in comparison to most comic book films that came before, it still had a fantasy tongue in cheek light hearted campy element to it that allowed the viewers to not take it as seriously. Whereas here, it would've came off as laughably absurd if there wasn't that much collateral damage with all these aliens with godlike powers fighting on earth, and superman can't fight all of them at once. I think the movie was great. the only issues i had with it was that I think it could've used a bit more humor, and the romance between Lois and Clark could've been written better imo. But apart from that, i loved everything else about it.

So nice to see you getting to the modern Superman universe. This movie really set the bar one how to realistically depict a meta-human fight sequence and what the destruction would be, and of course how that affects the humans. A shame the studios messed up properly building off this foundational movie but hopefully you still get to watch the Snyder Justice League down the road. That reaction might have to be split in two due to the 4 hour run-time but I'll enjoy watching both vids 😂

That's the big philosophical difference between the two movies. In '78, Pa Kent says, "You were put here for a reason, and it wasn't to score touch downs." And then he dies, and Clark CAN'T do anything and realizes that he's not all-powerful. In '13, Pa Kent says, "You've got to keep this part of you a secret" even if it means allowing people to die. Then he dies later while Clark is just standing there CHOOSING to do nothing with his powers because "he's got to keep the secret". For me, the Christopher Reeve movie will always be 100 times more heart-felt and inspiring.

I don't recall if there were Earth scenes in that series. What we have yet to see in a crossover event is when the doppelgangers are of different skin colors meeting each other. We've seen the gender change option, though. Loki, would fall in love with his female self! 😅 We've seen different versions of The Flash and Superman meet. Brandon Routh as "Superman" is larger than he is as "The Atom"! We've had a brunette "Lois Lane" meet a blonde "Lois Lane"!

That is the true, director's cut that was massively changed by Joss Whedon (up to 75% of the film was changed) after Snyder had to leave the project in post after a death in the family.

*If you know the scores/soundtracks of Hans Zimmer, you will find mostly a lot more than just one memorable theme. There was not just one BATMAN theme like in the Tim Burton directed movies [composed by Danny Elfman] or later in the Joel Schumacher directed films [composed by Elliot Goldenthal], there were different themes in "Batman Begins", but in "The Dark Knight" returned a variation of the action theme from "Batman Begins", "Molossus", in several tracks as in, e.g., "Like A Dog Chasing Cars". The "Molossus"- theme returned also in "The Dark Knight Rises" again. Another score trilogy composed by Hans Zimmer : "The Da Vinci Code", "Angels & Demons", "Inferno" [Original mystery thriller novels written by Dan Brown. Movies directed by Ron Howard. Main character "Professor Robert Langdon" played by Tom Hanks.] The main theme of "The Da Vinci Code", named "cheValiers de sangreal", returns as the Robert Langdon-theme also in the 2 movie sequels. In the "Angels & Demons" - score in the tracks "God Particle" and "503" and in the "Inferno"- score in the track "Life Must Have Its Mysteries". You will see the world of Original Scores, especially those of Masters or Grand-Masters like Hans Zimmer, Ennio Morricone, Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams are all rabbit holes. The difference between John William and Hans Zimmer is how they approach scoring. John William has a classical background that makes him lean towards more melodic themes, whereas Hans Zimmer prefers textures and sounds as much as melodic writing. So, Zimmer's themes, while making you feel extremely memorable emotions, may not be as "hummable" as John William's. As a composer, I believe both have their places. Glad you liked this movie! Hi there Jen, Superman is a very complex character nowadays after being around for 83½ years. DC Comics wanted to give fans a 21st Century version of Supes and created a comic book event known as the "New 52". The version you see in this movie is, in the most part, the latest version of the character. The premise is the same but the origin is tweaked for a 21st century audience. It does not diminish the character's 80+ year history. Superman is a character that will live on for a very long time. With that said, I've compiled a list of Superman's complete timeline below. It consists of the Superman movies and shows in order. The list includes all the movies, serials, and TV shows and free of any spoilers: •The Superman Serials (1948 and 1950) •Superman and the Mole Men (1951) •The Adventures of Superman (1952 to 1958 -TV Show) •Superman (1978) •Superman II (1980) •Superman III ( 1983) •Supergirl (1984) •Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) •Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993 to 1997 - TV show) •Smallville (2001 to 2011 - TV show) •Superman Returns (2006) •Man of Steel (2013) •Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) •Supergirl (2015 to 2021 - TV show) •Justice League (2017) or the "Snyder Cut" (2021) •Crisis on Infinite Earths (2020 - TV event) •Superman and Lois (2021 to present - TV show) **Superman animated in order: This list compiles Superman’s most notable appearances in animations and other shows - it's in case you want every last bit of Superman content you can find. If you’re going to pick and choose which animated projects to check out, I recommend the latest animated films produced by DC, like 2018’s "Death of Superman" or 2020’s "Superman: Red Son". •The New Adventures of Superman (1966 to 1969 - TV show) •Super Friends (1973 to 1985 - TV show) •Superboy (1988 to 1992 - TV show) •Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993 to 1997 - TV show) •Superman: The Animated Series (1996 - Animated TV show) •Justice League (2001 to 2004 - Animated TV show) •Smallville (2001 to 2011) TV Show •Justice League Unlimited (2004 to 2006 - Animated TV show) •Superman: Doomsday (2007 - Animated movie) •Superman Returns (2006) Young Justice (2010 to 2013 - Animated movie) •All-Star Superman (2011 - Animated movie) •The Death of Superman (2018 - Animated movie) •The Reign of Superman (2019 - Animated movie) •Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020 - Animated movie) •Superman: Red Son (2020 - Animated movie) If I happen to miss something, I'm sure the commenters below will point it out. I loved how you were able to understand and appreciate Zod in the film, most reactors that I’ve seen don’t. He is definitely one of the more complex villains or antagonists in these types of movies and kind of a tragic character if you think about it. His methods were evil from humanity’s point of view, but he was just doing what he was genetically programmed to do, ensure the survival and greater good of his own race. He didn’t really have a choice to do any different, and that purpose was destroyed at the end.
