Geoff has a very dark speaking voice. The first verse is very close to his normal voice. And then he just goes up from there! One of the best rock voices of all time. I also love the chorus voices. They start in harmony and splits with one going up, and the other going down. Be safe

There have been many power ballads written by rock bands over time. At the inception of that sort of song, it was a trend many groups jumped on. And all these years later, it remains a well-known type of rock tune. But this particular composition still stands above most all others. Obviously refined and sophisticated, it is a progressive metal masterpiece.
@WiiK4215 ай бұрын
Such a powerfully sweet, epic song from Queensryche. Just an absolutely beautiful piece of music written by Chris DeGarmo, and Geoff's vocals are the perfect complement to the instrumentation. The middle part about lucid dreaming seemed sinister at first until I understood what it was all about. I love the story of waking from a horribly bad dream...realizing it was only in your mind...your parents are right there watching over and protecting you, and you can safely fall back to sleep (with Brahm's lullaby playing on the cello).
@alexthorpe65835 ай бұрын
I think it was the Charismatic Voice who described Geoff's voice as fundamentally smooth, like milk chocolate. He may add things to it to change its texture, but the smoothness never truly goes away. Incredible range, though this isn't the best song to hear his high belt. This song has been described as more Pink Floyd-like than most of their songs. I'd recommend 'Suite Sister Mary' for something truly wonderful.

Take hold of the flame, Tokyo. Then, eyes of a stranger
@wookieenookiee66965 ай бұрын
From the first time I heard this on the radio back in '90 I always thought that chaotic jumble of words and phrases was alluding to the state of subconscious mind just before you enter REM sleep. With my brain working overtime processing the present, past and future without me having to think about it. Then you get that chorus of peaceful thoughts which helps dreams manifest. Having that explained (to me at least) in a song, was absolutely amazing. Another great reaction Jen
@xpatriatedtexan21223 ай бұрын
I've never thought of the song as sad. What's always stood out to me was the love of a father for his child and his desire to help them with a nightmare by trying to teach him lucid dreaming...to become the master of the dreams and then use that as a tool for learning in life, to practice, expirement... the pain in the dream world is not permanent. Then he reassures them that he'll always be watching over them, helping them through and reminds them he'll always be right beside them smiling. Just an absolutely beautiful story. The only real disconcerning thing to me is the distincly different voice that says, "Help Me!" at the end of the verse sung by that distorted voice. That's a bit unnerving. The voice is telling us how to achieve lucid dream/dream control and at the end what sounds like a young girl pops out of nowhere and says, "Help me!". Was this his daughter? What the heck was that all about?

If you like this one then there is an unpugged version of "I will remember" that you will LOVE. In contrast. If you want to hear Geoff's ridiculous range then the live Tokyo version of "Queen of th Ryche" will knock you down. However, there best album, IMO, is Operation Mindcrime. The album is a full story from start to finish but if you want to pick a couple then there is "Speak", "I don't believe in love" and of course "Eyes of a stranger". And then.. There is the Empire album lol

Hi there. First time viewer here and a huge Queensryche fan if my screen name is any indication. I love that you listened to this one first because Geoff is a force of nature and if you dig into more of their material, I think you'll end up being amazed by his range and ability. As a band, their musicianship, songwriting and storytelling abilities are second to none. The band is providing the harmonies in the chorus with Chris DeGarmo (beginning/ending acoustic and lead guitar) on the higher end. The other commenters are spot on with recommending Take Hold of the Flame next. Gonna Get Close To You is another example of his dark and creepy vocal. Operation Mindcrime is one of the best concept albums ever written, so I'd try Revolution Calling, Suite Sister Mary, I Don't Believe in Love, or Eyes of a Stranger. Man, so many more great songs, but I'll stop there. :)

Queensryche was one of the best rock shows I've seen. They played all of the songs from both Operation Mindcrime (it came with its own anime) and their new album, Empire, that includes, "Silent Lucidity." It was a fantastic performance from an amazing band. If you have ever sat on the edge of a child's bed after they have had a bad dream and you are there to comfort them and watch over them, you know all about silent lucidity, or at least near lucidity depending on how long the day has been.
