What most your subscribers appreciate (as do I) are your sincere reviews. Too many "reviewers" might be better described as "marketers" for the studios. Your mentioning "Easter eggs" aka "Memberberries" is absolutely accurate along with the copy/paste plot contents. Merry Christmas Jerome!

Hi JW. Thanks for the review. Yes, this movie is very derivative of previous Alien films, but I saw it for free (and therefore had lower expectations) and enjoyed it well enough. It was better than Alien Covenant at least. Have a wonderful Christmas. May it be your best one yet.

Dear Ms. Weiselberry, Thanks for the thoughtful review. I recently saw "Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim" and that also had way too many references and nods to earlier movies. There's planting Easter eggs for fans, and then there's pummeling a house with crates of eggs. In any case, have a Merry Christmas!

Thank you for sharing this video. Overall I like Romulus. I think it feels more like ALIENS than ALIEN. The final creature was the biggest let down for me. The action and intensity was good. I just didn't care for the creature's design. I agree the references were a little much but hopefully the sequel is less dependent on so much fan service. I am tentatively excited for the overall franchise revival. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Happy Sunday :) I saw this recently and agree that it does feel like a copy and paste, there’s so little originality in it, well I guess casting such a young group of actors to play forgettable characters is different from the other films because even when bad those films had some memorable characters, maybe I’m being unfair to David Jonsson because he did do a decent job as Andy. Unfortunately it seems Alien: Romulus has followed the same path as other franchise films like The Force Awakens, Ghostbusters : Afterlife and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice by just filling it with references and lines from the previous instalments and in some cases even including actors who have passed, Ghostbusters: Afterlife did that too. Overall I thought the film wasn’t terrible, i was entertained enough by it but will probably forget everything about the film in a few months. I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this film and no need to fret about it not being Christmas related because Xenomorphs are much more Christmasy in person : D I hope you and your family have a very Happy Christmas 🎄🌟 :) I love the cameo from XenoTeddy on your shelf for this review. I think he manages to get even cuter the more you see him. ~ Thank you Ms Weiselberry ~

Having watched this in theaters soon after release (to dodge the spoilers), I felt uneasy and walked out kind of disappointed, without being clearly able to tell what exactly it was that caused that feeling. Thanks for summing up all the issues. You have helped me put things into words, and my hesitation to recommend this movie is confirmed. It's such a pity they never managed to live up to the first 2 movies - they should have kept Neill Blomkamp on board. But that was just one in a long sequence of wrong turns.

When we saw it the theaters we were so disappointed. It was fan service run amok. Side note: There was something wrong with the audio in our theater in the first 3rd of the film. We literally couldn't understand any of the dialog. The heavy cockney accents of the two male leads in the beginning didn't help, but we had no idea what plot development was happening if any. What was clear, Romulus is just a mash up of callbacks.

Hi Jerome!! It's been a long time since I've commented as I've been buried underground due to work and life stuff for months. I'm just now getting caught up on your latest videos. This is a great, observant review and I agree with you almost completely on this one. I especially concur with you on the sad tendency of the studios to reference back too much to the classic originals when they create new installments or revive their "franchises" ("The Force Awakens" is in many ways a remake of "Star Wars: A New Hope", "Gladiator II" shares many story elements with "Gladiator", etc.). Maybe even the fact that they look at them as "franchises", with all the mercenary connotations that word indicates, is part of the problem. The only thing I differ with you on and was more okay with is Cailee's character going back for Andy. My understanding is that she grew up with him so she saw him as a brother, so I figured she had years where she knew him with his original personality before the "upgrade" changed him only in the recent hours. I can see why she would have an emotional attachment for the person he was to her all those years and wouldn't want to abandon him despite the recent events. That said, you're right about going back for him being another repeated story element. If it weren't for so many others surrounding it, that too may have had a more genuine impact. Cheers, Jerome, and a Merry Christmas to you and your family!!

Holy cow, I SOOO agree with your review. The #1 thing I agree on is how difficult it was to follow. Where are they? Who's in what group? Which ship are they on? Now how did they get there? And funnily enough, I noticed the references, but about half the amount you did. I'm 56 so I saw ALIEN when I was 11, ALIENS when I was 18, and well, I don't care for any of the films after that so I didn't spot the references to those. I did however play "Alien: Isolation" which was an incredible game, and had to smile when I saw references to that. :) Anyway, it was a pleasure to watch your review and know that someone as intelligent as you couldn't follow certain parts, just like I couldn't.

Hi Miss Weiselberry. I haven't seen Romulus yet. I've been kind of put off by a few clips because the young cast makes it look to me like it might feel more like a teen Alien movie. I just want to jump in here and wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for all the wonderfully entertaining videos in 2024.

Hi there J. Great discussion. I've only seen the first Alien, but I imagine with a franchise like this it must be difficult to balance the original with the familiar. I'm just now finishing the Fargo series, based somewhat on the movie. Lots of references (some call them Easter eggs) to the earlier film. I've discovered about 12 of them so far, but in one case a brief yet violent scene was a carbon copy. I was happy spotting the Easter eggs, but that scene was too much. “Oh, come on!” was my reaction. So, very good points made. Again, happy holidays to you and yours, take care.

I thought the movie was okay, but problematic. You hit the nail on the wall with everything you mentioned. I couldn’t stand the references to the previous movies or should I say movies that would later take place, because they made no sense. I also HATED the ending! It was such a copycat of the first movie’s climax. I would have loved this movie more if all of the characters, even Rain and Andy died and the movie would leave the opening for Aliens. So that’s how I really feel about the film. I wish it was better than it is now. Merry Christmas to you and your family, J! 🎄

100% agree on *every single point*. I honestly don't get how they didnt think they were basically ruining it with the copy/paste ethic. It felt like some kind of ALIEN theme park experience. What REALLY annoys me is that clearly younger Gen Z and Millenials will be seeing this as their first ALIEN film..... And the makers just robbed these people of experiencing those ICONIC "history of cinema" moments in their original context FIRST (see also the disgusting line for line, beat for beat lifting of the American Werewolf "Moor" scene in Zack Snyders ARMY OF THE DEAD, a film which also lifts from ALIENS). I genuinely find this an immoral act, stealing choice and iconic surprises from people, it genuinely offends me artistically and ethically. Fede is a GREAT horror director, and I genuinely think he had to deal with including a lot of this nonsense because of Studio Notes and Ridley's demands. The potential is there on screen for a much better version.

Overall I liked the movie a lot, especially the aesthetics and the actor who played Andy. One thing that no one has mentioned is why is there a rogue space station captured in the gravity of that planet, which the characters assume is an abandoned space ship? I’m with you. It was a bit overdone in terms of fan service. I enjoyed the film but speaking as someone who was sitt8ng in a big theater opening weekend in 1979, you’ll never get that mojo back. Not even for ALIENS as it played out. I loved BOTH films but the franchise has completely run out of steam and needs to be allowed to die. Alas, Hollywood doesn’t work like that. They are entirely motivated by money instead of art. When Alan Ladd jr greenlit alien in 1977 or 78, he did so because of the success of Star Wars. ALIEN happened to be the only scifi script they had at the moment. If the only script they’d had at the time was Logan’s Run they’d have made that instead. Unfortunately things have gotten worse. Much worse. Hollywood is bleeding money at an unsustainable rate and the financial demands are the only motivating factors now. No one is even slightly interested in originality. Disney made the John Carter film a few years ago and it bombed spectacularly and with it, killed any hope of another original project being launched. That’s why this film got made. It was deemed safe by the suits and would put money in the coffers. I hate that.

I’m a huge Alien fan and I was really looking forward to Romulus. However the references ruined the film for me. It’s “alien film karaoke”. Took me right out of the film. It’s so in your face and lacking subtly that it shatters the 4th wall. Also, it’s completely predictable. You know exactly who survives from the beginning so there’s no sense of peril and nothing to care about.

Great review, agreed on all points, except that I probably enjoyed the movie more in the moment when watching it in the theater. As for "what's left?" I don't know, make the sequel about Weyland-Yutani tracking down Andy/Rain for the behind-the-ear chip/a vial of goo, then have an all-out action romp on Yvaga with a bunch of colonial Marines...

Regarding the inclusion of Ian Holm (and I agree with your take on the whole concept), I wondered if you've seen the new Star Trek short that's getting lots of press? I have some specific thoughts on it which I won't share for fear of spoiling your potential viewing. As to this film, well, I've kind of resigned myself to the idea that the Alien franchise is dead, like so many others. They've tried and tried but nothing seems to have worked past Aliens. It sounds like a Star Wars Episode 4 vs Episode 7 situation, with episode 7 copying a lot of Episode 4 and just giving it a nice new coat of paint for newer audiences. Incidentally I never really loved the original trilogy as a kid and the only Alien movies I've watched Prometheus and Covenant so to me Episode 7 and Alien: Romulus really worked and I had a great time with both. Especially since I haven't seen the original Alien movies I had no clue that so much of Romulus was callbacks, so to me it felt pretty fresh and entertaining. I also thought David Jonsson was incredible in this movie, but I agree that digitally resurrecting a dead actor is not cool, even if his family gave their blessing to do it. Great review as usual, it was fun listening to a completely different (but equally valid) perspective than mine

I kind of hate the acid blood in the franchise, especially when they treat it like it's magic and can burn through several decks of a ship. That is not how acid works, no matter how strong it is. But when it just threatens to kill/injure people (like in the zero gravity scene) it can be cool.

10+ minutes into this review, I think JW is absolutely nailing it. Too derivative, too much obsequious fan service, too much lazy writing, characters not especially memorable... "Teen Alien Squad" or somesuch B.S. (This is not the franchise reboot I was hoping for.) Post-video addendum: I definitely do *not* think the creators of this film "stuck the landing." For my money, the third act is where this whole mess falls apart. Alien Resurrection did it better -- and wasn't half as pretentious.

I always love your reviews. I actually quite enjoyed Alien: Romulus, but I think it's because I had the lowest expectations possible. Like... if a film nowadays doesn't make "anti-sense," I consider it a win. I also liked David Jonsson's performance as Andy. And, I'm assuming the reason that the "he's an autistic android" is supposed to "make sense" is because the bio-androids of Alien and Bladerunner are both supposed to be modeled on humans. And the director, if I had to guess, is making a commentary that the things that humans make can often exhibit the traits of the humans that make them. But that's just a guess. I also liked a lot of the action and visuals. Rant time! But sadly, the era of good storytelling died once J.J. Abrams' nonsensical "Lost" became popular. Even more depressing is that in this post-modern era of marketing-led screenwriting we're getting to see just how many directors of yore were also nothing but "vibe technicians," like Ridley Scott. They just had other people working in the industry that would point out when the emperor had no clothes so that a film that actually made sense would make it to screen. And we just don't have that luck anymore. Also on the plus side for me was seeing the influence the video game, "Alien: Isolation" had on the film. Of course, that's also just one more thing the movie... uh... "emulated." Anyway, great review. And I'm sorry that movies now are all about the vibes and are intended for consumption by people who are doom scrolling on their smartphones. But on a positive note, it does make me have a greater appreciation for all the old timey films your reviews introduce me to. So thanks for that!

I found it fairly forgettable as (as you say) there is nothing new, and what is there is mostly a lesser version of the original. The sets, many of the shots, the imagery and sound design are much better than I had anticipated. Each character is generic enough to fade into the background. To me, Andy was the most memorable character, at least while he was Andy and not company bot. I do think that this is the best outing since Aliens, but that is more of a reflection on how little I think of the other films. For me, Alien and Aliens are the only ones I rewatch. The rest never quite found a compelling narrative or characters to being me back.

Did your mom fall asleep while watching the movie, or before you started it? That's some pretty important context. 😆 The constant references to past movies were so grating. That's the main thing that frustrated me about the movie. They throw all this stuff in that's supposed to appeal to fans, but they get the series lore that fans actually care about wrong. You can now get attacked by a face huger, impregnated with an alien, and give birth to that alien all in about 5 minutes? Seriously? There's a lot to like in Alien: Romulus. The use of practical effects was great and there are some genuinely compelling set pieces in the movie. The highs were high and the lows were low, which averaged out to a pretty mediocre film that I likely won't ever re-watch. Just like the last 4 Alien movies.
