🌶️ Easy char siu recipe - 10 minutes & 5 Ingredients! Plus a visit to our favourite char siu shop with tips from a professional!
My mom cooks it differently sometimes. Here's another simple alternative that she made a while ago.

My family like calls this dish: 'fake char siu'. It's our go-to dish when we don't know what else to cook or short of time. It's so easy. You most probably have the rest of the ingredients in your kitchen.
My mother's confinement lady taught her this dish. Because she had to cook lavish dishes for my mother, the confinement lady didn't have much time to prepare food for herself. So she resorts to simple dishes like this.
This is an easy and versatile dish. You could marinade the pork at night and cook it when you're back from work. If you don't have time to marinade it for long, it's fine too.

@@sara_khong l lived in Singapore in the sixties (that would make me around your mom's age!). Made many trips across the causeway back then and have returned on frequent visits. Street food in Malaysia, Singapore - nothing to beat that. And you convey this across so very well. All the best with your Vlogs.

@@sara_khong They still taste very good even after few hours. And no need to reheat! I live overseas now so when I'm back in Malaysia (Penang), its usually a rotation of different noodles but nasi lemak and economy fried noodles is definitely in there

Sara, if you had to choose between wok fried char siu, or oven roasted, which would you prefer? Very interesting method, the only time I've seen the wok used for char siu, but I think if you want the taste in a hurry its a great alternative :-) By the way, do you think using oyster sauce, is better than using hoisin sauce, for the marinade? Thanks.

I'll choose those made by hawkers in apollo oven! But at home, for ease, I like wok. But if I have time, I prefer oven. Long time allow the fats to soften. I've always use oyster sauce in most of my recipe instead of hoisin. It's more flexible. But I remember a family member who runs a restaurant use hoisin. I shall try that next. What do you think?

Hi Sara, another very nice video leading up to Christmas. Char Siu hmmmmm. Love to try this out one day soon with your Mum's recepi. Seems simple. Mom said not suitable. I think if you were to cook the sauce separately and fry the marinated meat on the airfryer it might work. But then again the oil from the belly will drop to the bottom. No harm trying. I always believe in testing new things in the kitchen!

I plan to try your no-oven char siu recipe soon, not easy to find pork belly at regular U.S. supermarkets, and I'm too lazy to take the train to the Asian grocery store, 3 long stops (about 8 ml/11 km) away. I used to live in the Cheras area, having left Malaysia since 2016, I thought there isn't much to miss about good old Bolehland until I watched you and your mom at those food stalls in Taman Connaught (especially the nasi lemak one) is giving me a second thought. I hope you reach 100k subscribers soon. :-)

I make many times and try different methods..... Lots on KZbin ....there lot of cheat recipe out there.....but notice the Chinese has formented soy bean in a red juice ...many different way I like too try ....love to learn

Hi! Sara, I have not yet try your mum's BBQ pork recipe BUT I liked the idea of its simplicity AND more importantly it does not incorporate the Chinese 5-spices. I have tried other recipes which uses the Chinese 5-spices & they do not taste authentic. Thanks for sharing. I will report back here when I have the chance to try it out.

I let my daughter & wife tasted it & they gave their thumbs-up approval. As a further complement to your mum recepi, this is what my daughter said ....... Ur mum was right, u shd allow her to put the shaoxing wine and dark sauce as she is veteren chef!! A light spray of oil for pan fried crispy effect as u cook for ten mins.try it.

Another simple "cheat" char siu: Chinese rose wine (mei kwei lu chiew), LKK char siu marinade, oyster sauce, fermented red bean curd (for colour), and five-spice powder.

dont worry, i did this with fatty chicken for experiment and it tasted good as well. sweet and savoury tastes go well with chicken too. also, add some toasted sesame seeds to it for another dimension.
