We've seen how the diaspora affected the naval warfare of the Mediterranean, but there is another part of this event that can't be ignored: Columbus' journey to the Americas. The colonizing of the "New World" gave Jewish people expelled from Spain a whole new place to escape to, one hopefully out of reach from the Inquisition. And we see all of these ideas coalesce in one particular pirate, Moses Cohen Henriques, a man who used his connections to understand the workings of the Spanish colonies and pulled off one of the biggest treasure grabs on the high seas. Dude had his citizenship papers signed by Henry Morgan it really doesn't get more pirate-y than this.

Fun fact: sephardic jews in the Iberian Peninsula adopted toponymic surnames to hide their ancestry and nowdays "Pereira" (pear tree), "Pinheiro" (pine tree), "Moreira" (from the portuguese word for the blackberry tree "Amoreira"), "Carvalho" (oak) and Oliveira (olive tree) are VERY common surnames in Brazil.

It's very similar in Ukraine, Chekhov said "there isn't an item that won't fit for a Jewish surname". They don't follow general name etymologies. Many are a proper noun, Kravitz, like Lenny? Ukrainian for "tailor". Shvets, Portnoy - same meaning. Rybak - "fisher". Reznik - "cutter". Syrota - "orphan". Etc.

Being Dutch I’d like to be proud whenever the Dutch Republic does something great, but knowing it’s all overshadowed by the slave trade makes that impossible. History - even one’s own - must be analysed with careful scrutiny and constant vigilance against bias.

Everyone was involved in the slave trade. Everyone
@kikivoorburg
@kikivoorburg 3 жыл бұрын
@@moviesformoshedaniel9031 Of course, I'm not working under the assumption that the European slavers were somehow more 'morally corrupt' than anybody else was at the time. Nonetheless, 'not being worse than everybody else' doesn't equate to 'good' or 'moral'. History must thus be analysed with care. Rarely can anyone be labelled truly 'good' or 'evil'. The best we can do is 'bad for the time' and 'good for the time'. European empires were 'normal for the time', but on a larger scale than ever observed in history. My comment merely tries to point out that just because the Dutch Republic was slightly more religiously tolerant than other nations at the time, does not by any means make them a 'good' nation. Slightly better for the day, possibly -- but not 'good'. The continued engagement in slavery unequivocally proves this. Apologies for the long reply, but hopefully this clarifies my position somewhat!

The Dutch republic literally created civil wars and unrest in a territory that was peaceful. All so that the Price of Orange could get his own kingdom, and awful people could become richer persecuting their neighbors and stealing from their rightful Lord the king of Spain and the Church. I have nothing but contempt for the Dutch republic. The fact that the conversos overthrew and conspired to take down the local government while pretending to be faithful Christians just proves the point of the Inquisition, they couldn’t be trusted. Anyway I am so glad that these videos and history is surfacing. The so called victims can be victimizers, and the so called villains are no so awful if you take a closer look.

I'm very glad bits of Dutch history are being addressed by this channel, flattering or not. My schooling, back in the 80s and 90s, never even mentioned the history the Dutch have in Brazil. And it doesn't go much into the slave trade either. I have to hear about a lot of our darker history on KZbin. So it's no wonder that when the 'black Pete' discussion broke out in the Netherlands, my generation didn't get it. Luckily some channels are able to set the record straight. Thank you!

9:52 Virtually all of the best history works like this though. The problem with grade school history is that it doesn't have the time or space to get granular enough to tell these kinds of stories, but they are really the whole game with academic history. You've got to have an angle for every research question, because the big story is literally too big to get your head all the way around without resorting to simplifications. The only comments section on a video about Jews that isn’t filled with anti-Semitism. You must be doing something right

The first Synagogue of the Americas still exists! It's in Recife, Brazil and it's pretty humble but you can almost feel the history when you go inside of it

I lived in South America for a few years. I didn’t know about the Sephardic Jews until this series, and it explains a few things that seemed incongruous to me at the time.

For fans of Eric Flint's Ring of Fire series (which starts with "1632"), the latest book in the series is #30 (!), 1636: Calabar's War, and it features Moses Cohen Henriques as the main character's friend. I've only just started reading it, so I can't give an opinion yet, but I've enjoyed other books in the series by the same authors, so I expect to like it.

My family is from Casablanca, they had to run away in the middle of the night to the port for a ship heading to Marseille because they were afraid of persecution. I always wondered what life would be like if they stayed there.
