Jigsaw is by no means my favorite Saw film and is definitely VERY flawed, but I still feel it’s a bit underrated. The concept of Jigsaw’s philosophies and methods living on through the Jigsaw Rules website provides a good way for the series to continue once Tobin Bell is no longer with us, and while most of the traps aren’t spectacular, I love the Shotgun Keys trap, with which a little editing I think could’ve been a spectacular Saw short film all on its own. It’s also one of the best-looking Saw films cinematography-wise, and I liked the gradual shift of the audience’s sympathies from Anna to Ryan as it’s revealed what a monster she truly is.
@ripdalt3 ай бұрын
y'know i'd probably agree, though i wish it had some sort of character to it to make it stand out. it all feels very washed out and bland. even spiral had some moments of lovely color palettes. the ideas and intent were there, but it just comes up short execution wise for me
@SamuelMcAlpin-ft3uu3 ай бұрын
I get that. I definitely had much the same problem with this film that I did with Saw 3D in that they had a lot of good ideas without the best execution. It’s still enjoyable enough for me that it falls more towards the middle of any ranking of the films for me.

@grandmasgopnik96423 ай бұрын
@@SamuelMcAlpin-ft3uu ok I finished it. I really loved Anna’s character and was sad how they portrayed her. So a few things. I think they were going for PPD and shaken baby syndrome but just didn’t do a fabulous job at portraying how this type of abuse happens 😓. Unfortunately after the delivery of a child PPD can happen and it can not only cause the detachment of the person from the partner but to the child and of course it’s very stigmatized because ‘good mommies loves their baby 🥰’ and obviously experiencing the chemical imbalance makes that difficult. It also makes child rearing tasks more challenging 😥 and can lead to a higher instance of shaken baby syndrome or neglect which is why supporting those with PPD is so important. Still it’s not uncommon even those diagnosed with PPD to be unsupported through their difficulties due to the stigma and just generally because being a new parent is often not supported with paternal leave or other support systems. Basically unless you’re rich, have healthcare and good support systems in place already you’re already at risk before you have PPD, add it to the mix you are more at risk. If you have a history of being abused, neglected as a child, or domestic violence it also becomes more of a risk. When it happens to people like this they are not mildly annoyed yelling like I used to in an apartment complex at my neighbor screaming at 3 am, it’s a full on meltdown usually. Whenever an infant cries it’s not just activating an annoying response it’s activating essentially a fight or flight response…constantly. I haven’t done it but I can understand why it happens for sure 😅 after several months of crying for hours and hours with no sleep and no help. I personally laid my baby cousin who was screaming still in the crib because I was afraid I was gonna lose it and literally walked outside for so long until I walked into a river like a few mile away it got you doing weird shit dude. So when she screams at the baby to just shut up and then? Smothers it? It seems weird. Most the time people drug them, give them whiskey, shake them, abuse them etc to make them quiet down when they get to that point. I guess it doesn’t seem like she’s that distressed, tired or detached. Idk people in that space are FREAKING THE FUCK OUT. I mean makes sense to be able to hurt your own child. Also when she blames it on the husband I mean maybe it different elsewhere but in my family I’ve unfortunately had an infant die in that exact way where they were smothered to death in bed and uh the police didn’t arrest anyone 😥. It was an accident. I still think the husband could have hung him self in the same way either way in fact I think blaming it on him would have been more dubious in that way because it would have been necessary as she could have claimed to rolled over onto the child instead since there would be no legal ramifications only moral ones. Now if she is indeed supposed to be a woman with PPD and while it usually resolved months after birth depending on support and treatment of course if untreated it can last years when it would resolve she would feel that attachment return. The attachment to her now dead partner and her dead infant would be back and then she would be slammed with immense guilt, loss, shame and unimaginable pain. I imagine she would likely have to either dissociate or repress the events as a response. That would make her confession the most heart wrenching as through the games she would continue being the one with the most agency and compassion shown to the others while genuinely being unable to confess until she knew her own sins. It would also fit the spirit of the game well too (and jigsaws sort of black and white mentality as he disregards mental health concerns) as when John jogs her memory she would finally be able to confess her sins in a more explosive catharsis which if you have ever had repressed memories return it’s quite an intense experience, it can cause panic attacks, flashbacks and generally unpleasant feelings that would truly be a stark contrast to Ryan’s rather dull denial to the end (tbh idk how he is even guilty aside from generally being a weenie 🤷♂️). I think portraying a PPD character whose life falls to pieces in an actually sympathetic light would be cool. Instead they did what most people stigmatize ppd and shaken baby parents to be. Evil sons of bitches who literally get fed up like 3 times and decided alright enough is enough I need my beauty sleep 🙄 rip u baby 💀 alright let’s get rid of hubby too 😏 and the minute they had a gun they’ll shoot you dead 😅. I will say as it stands I actually really liked it. I liked the ones where Hoffman takes over too though 😅 idk 🤷♂️ if that helps others sort accordingly. I mean finally weaponizing that over burnt coffee? ☕️ fuck yeah dude 👌

Ya gotta admit, Logan has probably the BEST line of this movie. "You have a choice: Scream. Or don't." The way he delivers it while sounding sooo ice cold and terrifying, it just makes it soooo cool. Also, am I the only one who wonders where John Kramer's body actually DID end up? Since his grave was empty and replaced with Edgar, where did Logan put John's body? Also also, how the hell did he dig up the casket and switch the bodies without leaving a trace on the ground? Like if you dig up a grave, or any patch of ground, it's gonna show that something disturbed it. Unless Logan called in a favor from David Copperfield or Penn & Teller, I can't think of any way to pull that trick off.
@TakeYourChallenge3 ай бұрын

enter through the adjacent mausoleum (not on screen, but trust me, it's there) and dig a tunnel underneath straight to the casket
@wayneigoe67223 ай бұрын
@@ripdalt Okay, but that still doesn't really hold up... because then he'd have to make the tunnel big enough to get to the casket, make enough space to OPEN the casket, take John out, put Edgar in, and then get back through the tunnel all without causing a cave-in or suffocating... You're basically asking him to dig a cartoon style prisom escape tunnel in the span of maybe a day or two. And not be noticed. El Chapo had his men dig him tunnel from his prison cell to the outside and even with proper tools and gear, it took them MONTHS to do that.

I think you missed the part where Logan completely bastardized John's message. Well, John did too, to a point. Meanwhile, Lawrence is the true heir to Jigsaw, taking the core message and importance of rebirth and only ever providing aid to games that had the chance to save someone. Lawrence understood John's message the best.
@ripdalt3 ай бұрын
i think logan does a _fine enough_ job of carrying on john's legacy, but i feel like i compare him too heavily to amanda and hoffman, to his own benefit. hoffman absolutely disregarded john's teachings, and amanda went scorched earth before her end, so in comparison, logan's looking pretty good lmao
@richardtheactor3 ай бұрын
@@ripdalt I feel that's fair, they were the apprentices with the most focus, but even when looked at through that lens, Logan is just as bad as Hoffman, maybe worse. He recreated a game and threw "similar enough people" into it to exact revenge, and if we're to believe things went the same way, may have rigged them like Amanda. He's both of their worst qualities, and all of John's failures, combined. Interesting character, hard ass final line, should not be seen in the same light as Lawrence.

It's not great, I don't remember a single character's name, I already knew the 'twist' (what there was of it) and the traps were mostly... fine I guess. But even with all that going against it, just watching flash backs while secrets are revealed and Hello Zepp is playing in the last scene of the movie still puts me back in the mid 2000's going to the theater to see the new saw and being mind blown. I honestly wonder if the franchise would have 10 installments if they didn't have Hello Zepp as a theme song. I hated this movie when i first saw it (ha) because of the lack of continuity with the other films - for a franchise that often feels like a jenga tower of sorts, with different pieces resting, rickety, on each other, i felt like this new, shiny version that knocked it all down and rebuilt a lesser version with whatever ideas and characters it thought were valuable enough to keep was too frustrating to revisit. The whole initial experience felt like a letdown when I kept expected legacy characters to show up via flashbacks & the big twist honestly just frustrated me. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it, but nothing really noteworthy about it either, lol. The twists are fun even if it’s walking on familiar territory. After 7 years it was…I’ll say “nifty”, to have a new Saw movie. I didn’t have any expectations good or bad. Logan being YET ANOTHER conspirator was kind of head scratching at first, but I’ve come to think of his involvement with John Kramer, as well as Dr. Gordon’s, as more an occasional collaborator than full-on apprentice like Amanda or Hoffman. At least that’s how I choose to look at it in my own head-cannon.

Like what's Gordon up to? I also like to believe that Logan wanted one last round of Jigsawing, and decided to also take out someone he wants gone. So maybe Gordon confronts Logan after all this time about bringing him back. Something like that might be cool to see idk. It's been a while since seeing Saw movies.

i do think a saw series could work really well, i'm pretty sure jason voorhees is getting one, so why not the saw universe? whether it would be a prequel or a new story entirely, i'd still watch it

There was some potential just kinda left on the floor here. I think instead of the retcon of Logan being there the whole time, him and Eleanor were super fans that feel the need to continue his work.

You’re so right about Jigsaw being a boring ass movie. It’s boring on all levels: aesthetically too sterile, cinematography, editing, traps, characters, plot, everything. I checked how long there was left twice in this 90min film. I’d rewatch Saw 3D in its “so bad it’s good” insanity a hundred times over Jigsaw.
@ripdalt2 ай бұрын
exactly! saw 3d flies by with the hoffmanator, whereas here both the games and police work reeeeally drag on
@tpfang562 ай бұрын
@@ripdalt Saw 7 is extremely flawed (and lowkey sexist) but man, the traps go SO HARD, and it’s fucking hilarious and campy fun. Hoffminator going all Hitman was ridiculous but his murder spree is sexy ok? Spiral, as much as I really dislike Chris Rock and the execution of it, at least has a gritty aesthetic and some gruesome traps. got to give it credit it for trying something different, even if it fails. For me, Jigsaw is a 3/10 and Spiral is a 4/10. Saw 1 and 6 are 9/10s and all the others are 7/10 (yes, even Saw 3D). I have a ranking based on personal enjoyment but the Saw films in the middle are all pretty close in terms of quality to me with their own strengths and weaknesses.

I love these videos and im excited for the next ones. I think Spiral is the one nobody asked for, and i think after Jigsaw fans were okay to let the franchise rest, but wouldn't be opposed to more movies. Are there other horror franchises you wanna dig into after Saw, or any of the expanded media from the DVD extras and games?
@ripdalt3 ай бұрын
that's fair actually, genuinely nobody could've asked for what chris rock cooked up in spiral. i think eventually i would go over the games, and as for other franchises, i'd certainly like to go into the scream franchise, and i'm 100% getting into every kid's horror gateway, scooby-doo! :)

Jigsaw is not my favorite Saw film and therefore I am not the ugliest dalt. viewer. But it is probably my fourth favorite Saw film (behind 1, 6, and 10). It has plot holes, but like, yeah, of course it does, it's Saw. It has acting problems, but like, yeah, of course it does, it's Saw. It's a fun, fast watch and I think Logan is a great character and (I disagree with dalt. here) I am never bored by it because none of the plots feel extraneous (unlike 3D or 4). I don't think about it when I think about the series, but I enjoy it on a rewatch after the quagmire that is 3D, and that alone is worth something.

that's basically how i view it (and most of the series) as well, sure it's not _the best thing_ you've ever seen, but it's still a saw movie. this one just doesn't quite grab my attention like some of the others unfortunately, but at least it's not my least favorite :)
