That's pretty cool Don. In my last year of High School, a very good friend lent me a bootleg of it and I put it on my little 5" Sony reel to reel with a microphone. Still one of my favorite Hendrix live records. I really liked the positive vibe he put out, which unfortunately eventually dwindled away. I learned it all virtually note for note. Peace

This is the first show of this tour. His abillity on this last tour became exponentially better every day. You can hear ideas he does in later shows too. It all depended on his mood and on what he could get out of his guitar and speakers... He developed that at every new gig. Unfortunately he couldn't bring his electric lady studio with him... but he build his sound allong the way accordingly anyway up till the Isle of Wight concert that had in my opinion the best guitar sound he ever had. His studio was awaiting for him in New York. His musical mindfever never stopped developing... Of course we have so very few solid recordings recordings of these shows...this one might have sounded greater if they had covered it sufficiently and we might have heard a thicker sound that he craved for. His playing is excellent here... he came fresh out of the studio with all of his magnificent ideas and believe intact and he playes as loud as only he could and be beautiful in it... heartbreakingly beautiful. His beautiful voice cutting through clearly and full of convidence

I think his Berkeley concert from that year was equally great...I heard him at the San Diego sports Arena a few weeks later...he seemed very tired, and did not sound as brilliant as this recording sounds. He died just a couple months later...his mounting drug problems and frustrations with controlling his musical career, were weighing heavily on him that fateful summer.

Thanks for posting this better sounding version. I have the single disc version on Luna. " Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky". My version is 72:17, with all the between song tuning up and audience noise cut out... about 13:30 worth. But, this version has it beat soundwise. Yours sounds closer to the stage. To me, it's not as intense as the classic 69 LA show, that had more time devoted to jamming, but in 70 he had more and different songs here to play. He only played concerts in 70 on weekends, so he could spend the whole rest of the week in his studio. He said that he didn't care for the feeling he was turning into a human jukebox.

He is in such better shape than later stops on this tour. Just listen to Atlanta and Wight. He is exhausted and losing weight. Many pressures baring down on him during this time. No thanks to his manager and the record company; along with his own obsession with ELL Studio. This a bootleg recording that was released on Rubber Dubbed Records about 10 days later. I had the experience of meeting Al Hendrix, back in 1979,,,,while I was visiting Jimis grave in Renton, Wash...it was Jimi's birthday, but to my chagrin, no one else, save for a photographer/stringer for Life magazine were standing there, when suddenly Mr. Hendrix pulled up, and proceeded to lay a wreath of flowers on the grave...I backed away for a few minutes, then Al motioned me and the camera dude over...I talked with him for maybe an hour...he was friendly enough...but I came away feeling that he did not really understand the depth of his son's impact on the world of music....it struck me, as to how lonely the young Jimi would have felt, not being understood by his young peers, his relatives, etc....I think this is why he leaned into the Blues so much...his playing so often leaves me with a bittersweet feeling.

This performance, in it's time, was very underground and usually only very dedicated players/fans knew about it. At one time I learned every note on this album. I really liked the whole live feel; folks play very differently when they don't know they are being recorded. This was a very happy time in Jimi's life and it is very evident in the performance. I just have always found it hard to believe that he took his own life. Foul play, it's possible.

Jimi on fire with his best band- Cox on bass and Mitchell on drums. He progressed so much from '67 to '70 it was almost unbelievable especially considering how great he was in '67. Fanflippingtastic. Considering his trajectory it is almost incomprehensible where he would've been by '75 or '80. Cheers P[>

He was destined to die...many of his lesser contemporaries fell into the old drug trap that Hendrix was caught in...some made it out, but others did not...He was just too talented and sensitive to survive in this disgusting world we live in.

At this point, Hendrix only has about 6 months to live. But we can see in places of it where his music might have gone. It's still very blues-oriented, but also there are cool inflections of jazz: Listen at about 54 minutes along, as to how he incorporates all of those octaves and jazz-oriented chords. At this point, likely, the thought of just playing "Purple Haze" and showcasing guitar gimmickry probably brought him to despair - though he surely didn't want to alienate his audience. I think he would have taken his music more into jazz and other genres - and considerably far from just pop-oriented, vocal-driven songs, to some amazing instrumental explorations. To me, his best stuff slows down and milks the sweet spots with cool licks. Perhaps forming his own label or whatever would have freed him to more fully explore instrumental possibilities and other genres. The era of bands who could put out long tracks of album-oriented stuff - that's the truly magic era of the rock era. Such a small percentage of the best of the era's pop music got played on the radio. And record company pressure to constantly tour and to create potential radio hits - that just ruined a lot of bands. Course, it got far worse (and so here we are!). Radio looks for fast-food, mass-consumption music. The best music doesn't have artificial time limits (on songs) or merely aspire to market-driven expectations - as quality stuff is a multi-course meal, meant to be savored, enjoyed, and revisited to discover new nuances of taste.

I'm so glad to see someone else acknowledge the wealth that long tracks bring. My fav Hendrix track is 1983, and man is it a trip. Same with Child in Time by Deep Purple, Telegraph Road by Dire Straits, King Crimson, etc. But Jimi's sonic explorations thru Machine Gun and Hear my Train in the late Hendrix period did indeed hint at longer forms, focused on intricate, melodic-rhythmic guitar work. In his last interview he discussed new directions in jazz and with orchestras... while he was a bluesman he was openminded to so much in the sonic realm. So glad for these bootlegs considering his releases during his lifetime. Cheers!

I was at the concert but don’t recall Hot Tuna. Respectfully, my recollection is Hendrix was lone act that night. Google search reveals concert list that shows Hendrix alone. My first concert was Hendrix at the Forum a year before with Cat Mother and Chicago Transit Authority. Jimi seemed more relaxed in 69. At the 70 show, the audience cheered long after the set, hoping for an encore, but Jimi had left. In more than 30 concerts, I do not recall any other artist who failed to come out for an encore. I’m just saying.

@@ernesttenesmusstb9074 He was right not to do an encore. He gave everything, and if he didn't it was still more than we deserved. Everyone knows it's just a ploy. Hendrix was in a league of his own.

@@RockinRichy Thanks for your comment on mine. Personally, although I consider Hendrix one of the greats, I'm not inclined to think in terms of "league of own" or GOAT or "best" in matters such as musicians, compositions, performances, sports and what not because there is so much subjectivity involved. But that's me and I recognize that in music and sports, many folks are "fans" of particular artists, athletes or teams. I observed that to my recollection Hendrix at that show is the only time I recall an artist *not* doing an encore. (He did a couple encores the year before, as I recall.) It is the perogative of artists to do whatever, as long as they show up to the event and put on a show, giving the paying public value. SImilarly, fans and other followers or attendees are free to have their opinions. I attended a lot of shows back then and as far as my enjoyment in the moment, this particular show ranked behind several others I attended, while his 1969 show was perhaps tops. That is not a dis on Hendrix. Thanks again.

I just have to say in these troubled times... (govnment induced chaos, inciting racial hatred... ) Jimi would be attacked today by the BLM for not being “Black” enough! He cared about “Humanity” He preached love and standing up against hatred for the short time he blessed us here! Even though I’m much older now than he was when he died I will always admire how intelligent and “in tune” he was with the Real state of the world at such a young age ...which has only worsened since they killed him. He didnt kneel to the govnment nor would he support the Black Panthers .... both inherently violent to achieve thier objectives. Im my mind the Good Lord blessed him with an unsurpassed talent that he didnt realize he had. In Jimi’s words just about every gtr player was better than Him ... humble... always praised and promoted other musicians! Although they all knew they werent “there” . He was a great Man and and a beyond great musician! If only the hateful people in this world could be more like him! Much Respect Jimi! I hope youre with Christ Himself right now 👍
