Hello guys! A few years ago, I was in a bad car wreck, got disabled and suffered from horrible depression. Then I watched Jim’s Freedumb special on Netflix and been following him ever since! Watching your comedy specials and show has really helped me get through massive depression. So, thank you Jim for helping me in my life. My wife, Holly, and I watch your podcast on KZbin every week. We love each and every one of you guys and wish you all the best. It’s actually our anniversary this weekend, so if you could tell my wife “Happy Anniversary” for marrying this big dumb idiot, that would mean so much. Thank you for your time.

Jim Morrisons father was the admiral in charge of the naval fleet in the Gulf of Tonkin incident. Cant believe nobody brought this up as i think Jim would of liked that fact.

The original false flag terror justification of war, combined with a theory that a celebrities father was the admiral... can’t imagine why they wouldn’t discuss that... Or how you’d state it as “fact”... as if that’s not up for debate

If you ever want to see how weird the American perceptions of Vietnam and themselves were back then read two novels, Graham Greene's 1955 novel "The Quiet American", and the 1958 novel "The Ugly American" by Eugene Burdick and William Lederer. Both novels are critical of Americans. Compare those novels to the 1958 film version of "The Quiet American" and 1963's "The Ugly American." Full disclosure, I used both the books and films as some of the primary sources in my undergrad history thesis. There was this excellent course at University of Alaska Fairbanks where we would watch Westerns of each historical era in American history, we would watch Booming 20s Westerns, Depression-era westerns, WW II Westerns, etc. Last film we watched was Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man", a pretty great film. Sorry for the rambling.

Jim, Jack, Kelly, Forrest, sorry if this brings the tone down: but your podcast has got me through my depression. All the podcasts, not just Water Quality with Erin Brockovich or Cheese with Liz Thorpe, but all of them. Thank you for uploading podcasts regularly! The podcast on Depression was something I could particularly relate to. Some days I feel great with parties awaiting me at night, but depression hits first and I just can't go. I think you and the awesome crew have given me the strength to go, Jim. I hope that's the case. I haven't met any of you, but I respect all of you - Jim with your depression, Kelly with yours, Forrest with grieving over the loss of your mother, and Jack, if you're going through finding yourself and it's difficult. I'm personally feeling a decent 6 out of 10, and after listening to you podcasts daily, and realise we are all the same, and I feel a better 8 or 9 out of 10. I wish you all the best and look forward to your next podcast :) The Grateful Dead was another great one :)

I was in high school in the mid to late 80's when the most Vietnam War movies came out, and we were riveted because we were all sure that a war in Central America was imminent and we thought there was a good shot that history was going to repeat itself there and we could all be drafted to fight it. Anything related to the Vietnam War we ate it up because we thought it was our very near future.

Should ask a Vietnamese person, fly them over, ask them about the war. P.S. 3 mil Vietnamese dead is a very conservative estimate. Many estimate it at closer to 5 million including the U.N. America, indeed.

My dad was a sonar operator on one of those ships in the gulf of tonkin incident. He always said that it didn't really happen. He said some high up officer came in and told them they had been fired upon, he said no they hadn't, and then whoever it was pretty much ordered him to say it. As a kid I always knew about the Gulf of Tonkin incident because of that story. The sonar technician would, of course, know if a torpedo was launched. Anyway, there is no possibility it was an accident or misunderstanding. They planned it beforehand, and carried it out knowing it was fake. As far as I know, the government never investigated who was responsible for the deception, but it almost certainly was done with the president's approval.

A little known fact told to me by an old digger who was assigned as an instructor in Vietnam. When Australian patrols came across American patrols in the field they would lie low and not present themselves to avoid becoming targets of ill disciplined troops that were often high on something.

The thing that cast a huge shadow and influenced Vietnam policy during Johnson's administration was the narrative that China went communist. The feeling was that China was "lost' due to lack of American effort and it was something politicians tried to pin on their political opponents. There was also a belief that communist countries walked. In lock step together in order to take over the world (domino theory) where each communist victory led to further countries turning red. Vietnam was never about Vietnam itself, it was about communism. Nixon was the first to explore the idea that there were divisions between China and Russia, which proved to be correct. China and Russia we're at each other's throat, with open warfare nearly breaking out between them. Going to China was probably the most brilliant move Nixon ever made.
