I was lucky enough to see him that same year, performing to a small audience at the Newport Film Festival in the Hotel Viking. I sat in the front row and it was just Jimmy and a pianist accompanying him. One of the highlights of my life.

Privileged, indeed to have had front-row seat in tiny bookstore during Lost and Found period. To have called it the single most impressive live performance this jazzophile ever done seen is massive understatement. Not only embarassed (slightly) by the gut-wrenching depth of some heavy ballads, delivered as no other, turned to see behind what almost could have passed for wake. Not a single unaffected person, with many in bawling tears. And that was only three songs! Later, was able to give heart-felt compliment to Scott himself, saying “You’ve got the best phasing in business.” And he, consummate crooner, just shrugged and “Aww, thanks baby. Practically EVERY singer mentions at least, if not steal, Scott. His chromatics inspired no less than young Nancy Wilson, Franki Valli and so many more. Obscure melodies thrill once again with his interpretations, noted by songsmiths everywhere. No gimmicks, flangers, sweeteners or studio tricks. Interesting also, is Ray Charles, huge Scott fan, chose him to produce first album on Tangerine label, Which, because contract disputes, never released. Did see one of only copies known to exist by fellow concert-goer, who’d won advance release in radio call-in show. Record pulled shortly therafter. Scott is in league of own: Hampton sidemen sometime wondered if Poor Jimmy gonna collapse on stage, emoting so. But we see otherwise.

Hi Fans, Thanks for your interst in Jimmy. Kallman's is a hormornal deficienty (not a disease), that effects 2% of the population. He did not stop growing at age 12, he grew 8 inches taller at age 37. Yes, it true he went from 4'11" to 5'7" his height today. Jeanie Scott **************

I keep returning to this concert, it's so fascinating and swinging. The thought just occurred to me this time, that Jimmy Scott and Miles Davis could have collaborated on an album. There's something in their approach to tonality, a similar plaintive, singular quality.

Dinah Washington has stated that Jimmy Scott gave her her style...I knew him on early recordings he made and one can see on the 1950's recordings where he ifluenced so many vocalists..wonderful.

Not too many people know about the disease. There is a very good biography by David Ritz named "Faith in Time". It is a fascinating book. Jimmy got ripped off in his early musical career.
@KojiRecords15 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Scott ripped off himself by 1) getting involved with many a wrong woman; 2) not fighting that bastard Herman Lubinsky to get out of his lifelong Savoy Records contract; and 3) taking long term employment outside of music when he just should have hung on in there and kept singing. In "Faith In Time," Jimmy lost alot of time...and deprived the world of his magnificent musical genius. Glad Jimmy came back in the end, can't make up for lost time but at least we have gems like this to enjoy.
@SoulSister665 жыл бұрын
Jimmy never stopped singing or performing during those years and even recording. You don't know the whole story.
