@criswalkern they had a problem in the late 90s with their egos, which was linked to the coaching and front office. Fact is I watched the 90s team in real time (including the heartbreak in 94, not making the playoffs in 96, and the first and second round outs) and their attitudes don't have a correlation.

Biggest story is skill players like Jack playing defense this year. Jack was abismal defensively in prior years. Basically waiting for pucks to come his way. This year Keefe's got him playing way more defensively and on the PK. He's finally making a play towards becoming an Elite player all around

Devils fan here. Think they need more depth especially with injuries in their bottom six. Players like Mercer are also awaiting breakouts from their own slumps. Other than that they've got great structure, mentality, and honestly have been getting beat on the luck game for a good part of their losses.

The puck luck thing is killing me recently. Feels like nothing is bouncing our way. Last night against the Leafs is a perfect example. I’m hoping as the season goes on, that puck luck will regress to the mean and just be as helpful to us as it is to other teams.

@@ritterengine1289I wouldn’t go that far. Believe me I wish we had Shasterkin or Boberovski or someone like that, but Marky is damn good. And Allen is a killer backup. When they play a full 60 min game, they’re a contender. Late starts, not finishing checks, etc, will hurt them. Keefe was my favorite offseason signing. Add 1-2 pieces, top 6 winger, bottom 6 center, and look out!

One thing you forget to mention is the depth players we picked up. They are all gritty hard hitting guys. I gotta disagree on the coaching style, though. Lindy Ruff made us a rush team, no strong forecheck, no physicality, and he let Jack Hughes do whatever he wanted with no accountability. Under Keefe and with the new roster, this team is much more physical, and every single player is held accountable to buy in on defense. Jack Hughes even plays on the PK now
@adamdulmer19712 күн бұрын
Bringing in Pesce, Dillon, and Kovacevic has been such a game changer. Seems like Pesce has rubbed off on Luke Hughes as well bc Luke defensive game has been absolutely stellar playing w Pesce this season.

I actually predicted them to finish with 91pts, just squeaking into the playoffs as the 3rd seed in the Metro. Something I thought ppl overlooked was Markstrom's steady decline along with his age. He's defied my concerns thus far.

not enough can be said about the defensive acquisitions. Kovacevic was another masterpiece trade by Fitzy. Pairing him with Siegenthaler, who is back and better than ever, is a top 5 pair in the game right now. Luke Hughes and Pesce, acquired as an FA, is a top 10 D pairing. Acquiring Dillon as an FA is a minutes muncher and nasty physical presence and having a healthy Dougie is also great. We even have great prospects in Nemec and Casey in the AHL. That says a lot.

There are three really good teams in the Metro, and two of them are going to have to face each other in the first round. That's going to be a brutal series. Of the three, I think the Devils have the smallest chance of winning the division and getting a much easier first round matchup against the Rangers, Bruins, or some other wildcard team.
@jimmyhockey9 күн бұрын
I can see the devils finishing 1st if they improve the little things and stay healthy, it will be difficult with Carolina and Washington being so good this year but they have a chance
@gabrielrockman9 күн бұрын
@@jimmyhockey They do still have a chance, but I think Washington and Carolina are the two favorites to win the division, mostly depending on how quickly Carolina gets back its goalies. When healthy, Carolina is the best team, but Washington should win the division if Carolina's goaltending issues linger. Kotchetkov has had three bad games since returning from being injured against Columbus. And it was really bad timing with Andersen out for a couple of months. I have a feeling that Kotchetkov came back too quickly because Andersen was out. So right now, I would say that Washington is the favorite to win the division, but Carolina is the best team when healthy (to be fair, Washington has been on a tear with Ovechkin on the IR). New Jersey is probably going to have to face Carolina in round 1, and that's going to be really rough. I just don't think that New Jersey is as good as Carolina or Washington. They might pass Carolina if Carolina's goaltending issues linger, but that just gives them home ice advantage in a very tough first round matchup against Carolina unless they can catch up to Washington as well. If Carolina is healthy for the playoffs (especially if Andersen is healthy), I gotta choose them over New Jersey. Andersen has a 2.19 GAA since joining Carolina for the 21-22 season.
