I'm a white belt with 2 years of training, and I've just recently started experimenting with when I can cross my ankles in back control. Most of the white/blue belts I roll with don't think about the ankle lock because our gym really works hard to teach people NOT to cross their ankles when they have back control.
@TylerSpangler
@TylerSpangler 2 жыл бұрын
Best time to experiment is at white belt! I honestly don’t think it’s a huge issue. Some of the moves also require using your hands, which just frees the neck to a choke.
@calebschaaf1555
@calebschaaf1555 2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerSpangler It's funny, too, how you can know something but not make a connection. Whenever I have back control, I always work to get a high angle to make chokes easier. But I realized watching this roll that I don't try to work up when someone has my back. I just try to get my hips and shoulders to the mat. I was like, "Oh, duh. I can work my body up, as well!"
@kevinsbacon932
@kevinsbacon932 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been submitted a couple times when I’ve had my feet crossed. My opponent who I have back control of will push down on my top foot making a fulcrum over the bottom foot, tapping me before I finish the rear naked choke. So I don’t lock my ankles anymore
@calebschaaf1555
@calebschaaf1555 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinsbacon932 I think that's the point of Tyler's comment in the video. Crossing your ankles is dangerous, but it's not *always* dangerous. You've got to figure out how and when it's OK to do it. My gym teaches not to lock our ankles, just as a standard. But even our professor (rarely) does it during high-level rolls at times.
@ssssaintmarcus
@ssssaintmarcus 2 жыл бұрын
@@TylerSpangler idk…if a person locks their ankles low im going to figure four the F out of their feet and extend my hips hard. That’ll teach them. I’ve even finished people with just one foot in the figure four so almost like toe hold pressure.

I have to admit my stupidity and say that until this video I had thought Tyler and Jordan were same channel. I guess a lot of content is voice over with different people training so maybe easy mistake to make? Either way Jordan just got another subscriber now that I realized I hadn’t previously subscribed. As a blue belt I find theres a time and a place to cross your feet on the back. Personally I find my control is weaker doing what was in the vid vs doing a half gaurd type back control with only 1 hook on the bottom and your feet crossed under the top leg. It makes my armbar transitions easier as well maintaining back by throwing the hip over to thwart escape attempts. It also take bucking out of the equation because you can't buck with no hips
