What a wholesome family based video. A brilliant shed build and fitting it out. A massive well done to Caiden for taking it upon himself to fit the door furniture. There are a lot of fully grown adults on here who are proud of you young man for wanting to help out and learn more. Too many kids are glued to phones and tablets nowadays when the Muller boys are out there doing amazing things. Well done, Jesse & and family 👏👏

I learnt along time ago, buildin my second home. Insulate well enough, so you can heat it with a cigarette and cool it with a martini.
@jmuller862 ай бұрын
lol good point. I was thinking of just putting one of those buddy heaters in here with the pilot light going. that is all it should take. and on a 20lb propane tank, that should last like a month or more at a time
@horstszibulski192 ай бұрын
@@jmuller86 I wouldn't recommend anything with a open gas fire, it will bring out moisture. Better use one of these chinese diesel heaters, internal combustion, unreal low power and fuel consumption and really cheap, For a shed like this well insulated one, 2 kW of heating power would be sufficient. I'm heating my uninsulated minivan with a 4 kW heater up to bikini temperature in no time even in winter. 👍👍👍
@currentfaves65Ай бұрын
@@horstszibulski19 Yeah, been watching van life channels for years. Everyone one of the full timers leaves the propane heater for diesel because of the moisture issues. The only part I am not sure about is how often the diesel heater will need to be service / cleaned. Once a month for sure.
@horstszibulski19Ай бұрын
@@currentfaves65 Having mine only serviced twice, if you would call restarting it after improper shutdown and soaking the chamber, used a vacuum cleaner as a blower and restarted the heater with a cloud of smoke and particles, no issues beside that, happened only these two times in over five years since installing it... 😉🤞

Hey Jesse, Upstate New York here... I was going to insulate my entire Solar Shed but decided that maybe just insulating the batteries themselves would be easier for me. I bought a rack mount and have 5 batteries installed. I just cut some spare 6x6" beams into 8 inch high blocks to sit the rack on (it gives me some space for a small heater under the battery stack). I then just bought a few sheets of 1" poly-Iso to cut to put under, on top and around the rack. I used regular foil tape to seal the corners. I purchased a small thermostatically controlled outlet and plug my heater into that (I set it to turn on at 32 degrees and go off at 40 degrees.) This way, the inverters and everything else that actually runs more efficiently in the sub-zero weather is separated from the insulated battery rack, and the tiny space that gets heated doesnt use much of the stored power at all. I rarely had to worry about it, even during extended periods of very cold weather. And saved me a LOT on insulation.... I think I've got some videos of it posted on my channel, and you're always welcome to come up for a visit to our little homestead....
@jmuller862 ай бұрын
yea I will probably still make an insulated box around the batteries and use seed starter mats with a thermostatically controlled outlet to warm them up. But I also wanted to insulate the shed itself because I noticed that condensation becomes a problem with uninsulated areas. Where abouts are you upstate?

@@jmuller86 We're in St Lawrence county south of Canton/Potsdam. Moved up here onto 30 acres of woodlands from the NC mountains. (Wife was from Ottawa, CA). We've spent the past 2 years building our own home here on the property and just finished up the house last month. We insulated it heavily and heat with a wood stove with wood from the property, generate all our own power with solar, and like you're doing, had a 1800 foot 1 Gig fiber cable buried for our internet (from TDS). We love it here. Now I get to start working on the property since the house if finished.

Nice little power house, I’ve done similar. Few tricks/ideas. To resolve the braces I’ve used banding straps nailed into each stud. An external Wi-Fi antenna, the shed will act like a faraday cage with the foil back insulation and metal roof (ham radio and experience). Place your batteries in an old refrigerator and heat that much smaller space. Star link is awesome for internet and is moveable on your property (I love it). Keep chugging along and you’ll get there. We’ve been at it for 5 years deep off grid and even colder then you. 👍

If you have more of the galvanized roofing I would use it for your siding as well. Makes it pretty much bullet proof! Construction adhesive is a quick way to stiffen a structure and waterproof the laps. The electric blankets they make for car batteries are a pretty efficient way to keep the batteries warm and as the heat transfers it will add to the inside temperature. Win/win.

When doing the 3 inch foam in a 3.5 inch cavity, you should try a few rubber grommets as spacers between the foam layers. With the expanded foam around it, you end up with a closed sealed pocket of air giving more insulation.
