Joe Walsh - How To Stay Sober

Billy Connelly, Joe Walsh, Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, they did it but how do they relate to all of us regular folks? How to do it? I think the one algorithm that connects them to us is as powerful as it generic: "replace it with something else." Penn and Teller said, "diversion" can be harnessed and people think it's magic." Hey man if it works then by golly it is magic.
Joe used to hang out with Keith Moon and trash hotel rooms tear out the walls just like in the song. Howard Stern asked Joe if he was upset he partied away $50 million dollars. Joe said something like No It's not the money that bothers me, it's the time. I don't remember large portions of that time. He was a coked out millionaire on a one way trip to hell, he said rejoining the Eagles saved his life. Here is his words of advice -Don't Do It Alone. Take it from the expert. Joe Walsh is a good man - even before he was sober. I remember seeing him do a show in the late '80s where his warm up band didn't show up. He came out alone onto the stage, sat on a stool, apologized for the warm up band not showing and proceeded to play acoustic guitar, doing songs like "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" - we loved it!

I don't know if I found this video or it found me. My alarm is One day at a time by Joe Walsh. After coming out of a treatment center for a 2nd time a few years back, I also made it my ringtone. Also got the tattoo. By living one day at a time I found something that works and have been able to take back a great deal of power in doing so. My thought clarity, reasoning and logic have improved drastically. I don't just think outside the box, there is no box. 😎

I've loved my adopted brother Joe Walsh for more years than I'm able to remember due to somethings that may have been a little bit illegal that I may have been taking for about 35 years. But me just like millions of others are happy to see him sober and better than ever. And definitely just as funny and crazy. When someone like Joe Walsh gets sober it encouraging to others with demon addictions. Meaning alcohol or whatever the demon is because remember the reality part is most of us can't afford to live the HIGH life as Joe could easily go back to. Money wise not health. One more thing,imagine having Polusi for a friend and staying up one night for two weeks or so. And living to talk about it. Not to mention Joe's Budro Keith Moon and the others. Joe's definitely been a inspiration to me. Thanks for sharing Joe.

I had a brother in law (now deceased) that was attending AA meetings in the Denver area. I had heard Walsh attended local AA meetings as he traveled and i asked my bro in law if he ever ran into Walsh at the meetings. He said they were supposed to keep things private but he did acknowledge at least one meeting with Joe in attendance. He also said there was no special star treatment and Joe was just one of the crowd and serious about why he was there.

you have to have deep character, a great support network helps, and the actual desire to go clean. or down the slide you go. great respect to Joe in more ways than one.

It also helps to have a understanding of the "process." I mean cognitive science. They need to put this down into the grade school level. Every person has a different "cognitive footprint." The public narrative, rules, and laws of society are only just now catching on to this. This science is hardly more than 30 years old. Every person is different that's someone can say, "oh It's Easy, or It's very Hard." Joe's great advice is don't do it ALONE pickup the phone, get some help going. In the future they will look back at us wondering why we didn't undestand the connection between the mind and the body. Once you understand how your body works it's like looking at a diagram or road map. You can see all the stops along the way. Once you see that, you can say HEY lets stop the car and switch directions! This is good to know for everyone even if you never drink or drug. Another way to see this is, learn to hack your own self before something or somebody else does. Google and Facebook are hacking all of us right now, they KNOW BETTER and they don't let us in on the deal. I'm working on a project from Bruce Lee's philosophies. I used to work with a dry alcoholic - he was a great guy and had been sober for nearly 25 years but still attended AA meetings, but only every couple of weeks by that stage. I remember him telling me he was in a bar having a drink with all his colleagues from the building site after work one evening. He said the last thing he remembered was the landlady telling him to take his feet off the table. Next thing he knew he woke up a day and a half later, on a lovely sunny day, halfway up a mountain, surrounded by grazing sheep! And he never knew to that day how he got there.That to me was a powerful illustration (like yours) of the destructive power of booze if you're of that persuasion. I realise I'm lucky. I love a drink, but when I reach a certain level I can stop and go home.

He's lived quite a life, had some heavy hard knocks, grateful to be alive. Joe Walsh is a true testament to an ex-addict doing his best to stay sober, day by day. Love Joe's music, songwriting, producing, guitar playing. Joe Walsh "So What LP" still holds the musical test of time...after all these decades. It was recorded after he tragically lost his four year old daughter from a drunk driver in a car accident. The final track "Song for Emma" always hits me. My all time favorite from Joe, next to Barnstorm.

Joe telling it exactly how it is .the stuff will rip you away from anything and everyone you love . You cannot soynd or play good drunk or high. For the same reason you can't drive drunk or high . Or tend to family work etc .yet this stuff will tell you and make you feel like you can not live or sleep without it. It's when 7 couldn't sleep with or without it and started t get delirious that 8 had to admit complete defeat . a day at a time 10/22/12 . have a loving girlfriend . and a awesome family friends and a band where atleast 2 of us are sober. I love Joe. Here's the thing. Joe is BRILLIANT! I mean most people do not really understand what a brilliant musician Joe is. He is so brilliant that for 30 years he was pretty much not in the building and was still great. Ok so what I really want to say is whenever I think of Joe I think of all his contemporaries who lived life hanging way over the edge of the cliff to oblivion. Joe hung just as far as they did. Pretty much all those guys are DEAD now. Joe is the one who came back to us. So I am grateful for still having Joe even though his lifestyle has obviously had a damaging effect on him. Every time Joe does something new I appreciate it more than any other artist because he was just a sliver away from not being around but he decided it wasn't his time to go.

You stated your point well, I couldn't agree with you more. It is amazing. My question its always WHY? and HOW? I do not think we are in one big race with winners and losers. Because we see folks do horrible things and live forever, and yet, we see people do everything rigfht, even go "normal" and above and beyond, then drop dead at such a young age. You really need to do the right thing and misbehave accordingly you can't just go forth blindly living in oblivion. You can't listen to ONE person spout about and say some crap they think is the reality for everyone on earth.

@@BabyOatmeal Keith Richards said something about this in his book. He knew of the rumors that he and Mick were getting blood transfusions constantly to purify their bodies along with a lot of other things but that of course wasn't true. He went on to say that his family has very good genetics and that none of them hardly ever got a cold. So I guess there are a lot of variables in all of this like anything else. I think another part of it is if you have gotten past the point of caring about yourself. Keith Moon, John Entwistle, Phil Lynet and others just got too deep in and had no interest in getting out. Mick Fleetwood talks about his days off while on tour in Europe. He used to charter a jet to the states and fly there just because it was easier to score dope in the states at that time.

Chasing health is just as cool , and being a rebel to those who don’t want you to stop is a great source of strength , and taking prescribed meds when needed to help is just as respectable if you don’t care what people think too, only if your at that point of strength and not before.

I quit in 1991, was 25 years old and dying. Been to detox so many times they knew me there. My life was going nowhere. Used to stumble around and complain that I didn't feel drunk. Had been drinking since I was a kid. Living in Milwaukee didnt help much either. A drinking buddy of mine met Joe at nightclub in Milwaukee and drank with him He said that Joe kept up, he was one of us. I had always wished back then I was along that night. After being sober for many years I think it would be cooler to know the other Joe Walsh. Found out that I have many other things in common with him. Probably the biggest thing I have on common is ham radio. This hobby saved me when all my friends abandoned me. You don't drink in Milwaukee there's something extremely wrong with you! Met these nerdy ham radio people and none of them really drank. Been trying to relearn the guitar, it's been 27 years without playing, it's not like riding a bike. Have already started a good guitar collection. In the past I always sold them to buy alcohol or drugs. Even bought a Z-Master, was exactly what I was looking for. Once a friend of Joe's invited me to talk to him on 10 meter AM, but the band was down at the time.

Never did answer the question on how to STAY sober. Here are a couple thoughts. Stay away from regret. Looking back. It's past and you can't change it. Look forward. Minute to minute when necessary. Look forward, not backward in regret. Also, break all habits where the drug was used.

His answer is "Get Some Help." He never said who to go to, he leaves that up to you. He's saying stop trying to do it alone pickup the phone. He is a member of AA, the way they stay sober is keep going to those AA Meetings. If you are looking for other sugestions I'm working on it. I call it "cognitive interception." Lookup Cognitive Science and it shows you the circuitry that your body uses to connects to your mind. Once you become aware of this, you can start intercepting (interuppting) the signals manually yourself instead of using medicinals to do it.

I'm not nearly as bad as I was 10 years ago and I don't want to be , but I just can't see a life of completely cutting it out.....I'm just drinking now, no more drugs in many years....it's a choice.
