Thanks for a nice video. I completely agree the two things that blow you away are the ride and acceleration. Lovely! There's a specific place in the rear trunk that fits the charge cable very well by lifting a flap. The front boot will hold a travel bag nicely. Disagree with you on the brakes and you probably noticed it stops faster than the Tesla. There really are no brakes that slow you down from speed to say 5 MPH unless you do a panic stop. It is all regen with over 250 KW so there is no feel of the transition from regen to pads. What you may not have experienced, yet which is also nice is the experience when traveling slow in the higher gear and going to pass someone. It pulls hard, then shifts down to the lower gear and bang; takeoff! One other item you didn't focus on is the map. That is very responsive when you go to adjust it. The really bad news is the APP. There are less functions than there are in my Volt and it's cumbersome. Here's the stop against the Tesla kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6WmeIhtd7l1rJo

Just a heads up to anyone else reading about charging stations - the cars won't use the full 50/150KW charging power towards the end of the charging (say after 75-80% capacity) to preserve the battery's long term health. Unless you truly need the max range, I think its generally recommended to not go below 10-20% charge and also not to charge above 85-95% of the max capacity. For most people, as a commuter this will be completely fine as I don't think I've ever met anyone that commutes more than 200mi (or 100mi each way) per day. That way you can just charge it to max before a long driving stint to reduce the amount you would need to wait at a charging station. Personally I like to take a 30-minute break every 2.5 to 3hrs driving anyway so that would work okay with an EV.

Hey Joe, thanks for the comprehensive video. Really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work, and glad you decided to keep making videos like this. Regarding the Taycan Brakes: It may have something to do with the Regen. Porsche says, you won't have all the regen (or something like that) the first 500 or so miles. Therefore the blended braking and range regeneration (the Porsche can do up to 270 kw, or 1.4G's) may not be at it's fullest, and that's what you could have experienced (if you're not just sensitive altogether). Additionally, most Taycan drivers range usually gets better the more they own it, drive it (unless they drive it like an absolute madman). The Porsche Range Manager's conservative as well. So, you will usually get more range than what it says. The Glass is treated with 9 layers, and most owners says it doesn't give off heat, even on really hot days. So, that shouldn't be a problem. Of course your mileage may differ. Good for you, for Checking out TaycanForum and Car Wow before this for insight and pespective!

Joe, great video, thanks for the effort you put into it. I have read that the brakes feel somewhat spongy due to the initial brake peddle travel is actually initiating the battery regeneration, and the brake peddle requires an additional firm push to actually begin engaging the brake calipers. The Taycan is capable of approximately up to 270 kWh of battery regeneration when operating the brake peddle, which would create significant speed reduction and in most normal braking instances the actual brake calipers would not even play a role at all.

30:00 On the breaks one has to appreciate the tech. The bite might never be as harsh on the regen as it is on physical disks. The very high regen on the break pedal blended in with the physical disk breaking is the cool tech.

The biggest problem is the cost of these ev's when new ,and the fact that when they are 3 years old they have lost half there value and very had to sell when they are 3-4 years old.
@richardcorns85534 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say this is so true now, maybe a few years ago but things are beginning to change. The Taycan Turbo S in actually cheaper than the Porsche Turbo although we are yet to see what used prices will be like down the line. The Model 3 is similar cost to others cars that size in it segment or cheaper if you go for the Performance model. I ran a F80m3 back in 2016 £ 64k new as my spec, sold it 18 months later for £ 40k ouch! The M135i I own before that lost money at an alarming rate also. What I and trying to say is the most cars loose 50% value in 3 years. I have now owned my Tesla M3P for 12month cost £ 51k from new. 12month old examples now fetching this sort of price on Autotrader. Prices of 2014 Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe are also strong mainly because the market is now growing and beginning to take hold. People are now starting to understand EVs but do not want to spend masses of money on a new car so this is driving up the cost in the second hand market. Simple supply and demand.
@Chris-nj1mr4 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine (like anything electric powered) the batteries lose their potency after a while? I can't see EV cars making good second hand buys. Correct me if I'm wrong!
@richardcorns85534 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-nj1mr Most manufacturers have a five to eight-year warranty on their battery. However, the current prediction is that an electric car battery will last from 10 - 20 years before they need to be replaced.
@Chris-nj1mr4 жыл бұрын
@@richardcorns8553 Thanks for the reply Richard. Are the warranties transferable to the second owner or is that privilege only for the original buyer? It's not so much the battery NEEDING to be replaced, more a case of is it gradually degrading? I know my phone battery 2 years on doesn't last anywhere near as long as it did when it was brand new. The same cannot be said about a combustion engine, they're usually as strong on day one as they are years later.
@richardcorns85534 жыл бұрын
@@Chris-nj1mr The warranty is with the car not the owner. The battery on an electric car is a proven technology that will last for many years. In fact, EV manufacturers guarantee it. Nissan warrants that its electric car batteries will last eight years or 120,000 miles, for example, and Tesla offers a similar guarantee. This might seem remarkable when the battery in your mobile phone begins to wear out after only a couple of years, but during that time it might be fully charged and discharged hundreds of times. Each of these so-called charge cycles counts against the life of the battery: after perhaps 500 full cycles, a lithium-ion phone battery begins to lose a significant part of the capacity it had when new. While that might be OK in a phone, it's not good enough for a car designed to last many thousands of miles, so EV manufacturers go to great lengths to make electric car batteries last longer. In an EV, batteries are 'buffered', meaning that drivers can't use the full amount of power they store, reducing the number of cycles the battery goes through. Together with other techniques such as clever cooling systems, this means that electric car batteries should give many years of trouble-free life.

Power and Energy are not the same thing! Power, expressed in SI units of the "Watt" named after James Watt the 18th century Scottish engineer, is a measure of the rate at which work is done. More power means more work can be done in any given time period. In terms of cars, a basic "Watt" is a bit small, so we usually talk in units of 1,000 Watts, or KiloWatts, shortened to kW. Energy is the quantitative and accumulating property transferred to an object in order to perform work on that object. Wxpressed in SI units of the "Joule", named after James Prescott Joule, aother ye-olde scientist. Energy is broadly the result of Power multipled by Time, so a Joule is equivalent to expending 1 Watt for 1 second. Again, for cars the Joule is a little small, so we tend to talk about KiloJoules (1,00 joules), MegaJoules (1 million joules) or even GigaJoules (1,000 million joules) . To make things easy however, we more typically use a very simple unit, which is KiloWatt.Hours, that which is Power (in kW) multipled by the time it is applied for in hours. This actually makes it extremely simple to move between Energy in KiloWatt.Hours(kWh) and Power in KiloWatts (kW). For example, a 100 kWH battery (the total ENERGY stored in that battery) can supply, 100 kW for an Hour (because 100 x 1 = 100) Or is you wanted to charge that battery, using say a 50 kW charger, it would obviously take 2 hours (100 / 50 = 2). A charger rated at 7kW (the typical maximum for a single phase AC charger) would take 14.3 hours (=100/7) hours to fully charge this battery So despite people seemingly getting very confused by this new (18th century lol!) terminology, there really isn't any excuse for getting it wrong. To me, as someone who'd been developing EV's for 20 years now, people using the wrong units sounds as wrong as someone saying "my engine makes a power of 300 gallons", or "i was driving at a speed of 100 miles per gallon on the motorway". :-)

I wish people who want to review cars, particularly EVs, would do their research. What about the 800v architecture which allows the Taycan to charge at 270 kW? 5% to 80% in 22.5 minutes? There are now 10 Ionity sites in the UK that support this charging speed with more being added all of the time. And the fastest Tesla is now called the Model S Performance, not the P100D. That name was dropped a year ago. The other thing is the brakes. All Taycans use regeneration of electricity from the motors when you press on the brake pedal, up to 265 kW, and only the friction brakes after that. Unless you push hard on the brake you are using regen only, so fitting the ceramics is only going to make any difference on the track.
