John Peel

Күн бұрын

Documentary first shown on Channel 4 in 2005, looking at the most prized records in John Peel's huge record collection, which he kept stored in a special box. Looks at the music and artistes featured in those special records and at the music tastes of John Peel. Also includes interviews with family and friends, including wife Sheila Ravenscroft, son Tom (who was also involved in its production) and brother Alan; DJs Mary Anne Hobbs, Paul Gambaccini and Marc Riley; artists Elton John, Ronnie Wood (Faces), Roger Daltrey (Who), Fergal Sharkey (Undertones), Jack White (White Stripes), Mark E. Smith and Brixa Smith (Fall), Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt (Status Quo), Billy Bragg, Daman Albarn (Blur) and Pete Wylie (Wah!); plus schoolmate Michael Palin.

Brilliant! I can't believe so few people have viewed this, should be part of the music curriculum in schools. Thanks to all that took part.

This is the part of the show that made me cry. There was never anyone like Peel and there never will be again. There can't be again because that era of the radio DJ is all but gone now that everything is streamed. So in the end, the corporations won. But also in the end, we'll always have the music he opened our ears to. Bless you, John. You were a shining light of truth and honesty in music and we'll never forget that. John Peel, 1939-2004. "Teenage dreams - so hard to beat."

Hullo! Of course there were other thousands of groups JP cherished and supported, but these 2 were special, i grew up in the late 70s listening to him (from Portugal) on MW , 1,2 Mhz, if memory fails me not, since the spectrum starts at 535 Khz, with a kind of subsonic rollercoaster frequently waving up and down, but even so it was a rush of musical enlightment in the head. I heard him play ''Jimmy Jimmy'', right after dinner, i believe Spring of 79, and the Undertones effect clicked immediately; later on, it was with the puzzling yet pleasurable ''How I wrote elastic man'' and ''Totally wired'' that Peel introduced me to the Fall's wonderful and Spartan world. Just for this, i owe John a significant cultural debt i paid with my enthusiasm towards British and Elsewhere's popular music. Cheers, mate!

It just shows how easily kids are underestimated that his show had the biggest teenage audience. Listening and being educated instead of manipulated as is the case today.

I grew up listening to this man's pick and mix magic. If I had to find just one word to define Mr Peel it would be 'passionate'.

thank you for the documentary, I thoroughly enjoyed it, however it has left me saddened to know we have lost such a great man. I will remember him on his birthday in a few days time with fond memories of his services to music :)

Superb but sad :( At least radio 6 somewhat carries on the attempt to bring new and old music back to the peeps, but the UK misses Mr Peel..

I'm very sad because, although, I spontaneously picked up The Slits John Peel sessions cd around 2001, it never crossed my mind to find out who John Peel was. : (
