Could listen this all damn day. John Prine was a true gift to humanity. My mother suffered from Dementia, lost the ability to do everything she loved except one thing- listen to music. John was her favorite. Throw on an album and she'd sit and listen for hours. Slapping her own knee so hard i thought it would leave bruises on her withering body, but it was all she had left.

I live in Nashville, TN. I met John once in a Kroger (grocery store). He was shopping and I didn’t want to bother him. I just shook his hand and said thank you for the music. My favorite of his songs is Angels from Montgomery. He has a way of painting a picture of real life and then noticing the soul that exists underneath it. I used to go to this little hotdog shop called Hot Diggity Dogs just south of Broadway in Nashville. It was the home of Nashville’s Chicago Dog. It closed in 2019. The owner said that John used to come in periodically and get a dog and sit outside and eat it. I hoped I’d run into him one day. Instead, our paths crossed at Kroger. Thanks again John.

I have been listening to John Prine for over fifty years and every time I think that I have heard all the best John Prine songs I find another one. I hesitate to use the word genius but I don't know what other word to use. So, maybe, a down-to-earth American genius. For those who are just starting to listen to him, start with Hello In There. It is still the song whenever I think about him.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved husband. I'm glad you have those wonderful memories. I know what you mean, many Prine songs remind me of my fiance I met in 1980, the only man I truly loved. He was unlike anyone I've ever known, when I first saw him I felt like I'd always known him and we were just picking up where we left off. It was so easy to be with him, and he made every ordinary experience special somehow. We both loved John Prine and Harry Nilsson, when I listen to their songs it brings back sweet memories. Bert died in 1989, I'm never going to be "over it", but I'm grateful that: "...Well, I once knew love - I knew how love felt Yeah I knew love - love knew me And when I walked - love walked with me And I got no hate - and I got no pride Well, I got so much love that I cannot hide..."

I first heard this song during a time of my life when a relationship with a love ended. It was a painful time but I would listen to this and his voice would soothe the hurt I felt. I listened to the album ‘Fair and square’ regularly and became obsessed. I’d stay up late and scout KZbin and grooveshark in a bid to discover more of his music. Looking back, I think it’s John Prine combined with Nancy Griffith who got this English 25 year old into country music. I decided to listen again after hearing the news of John fighting this terrible virus and it reminds me of how much of an impression he’s had on my musical journey. Stay strong and fight this! x
