Meaning he figured it best to let things play out,allow the guards to get comfy as well as to see what it's about and once he'd been stabbed next to the fact he'd been worked over the whole time they got comfy. Then as Viggo talked about killing him,Marcus saw the opportunity to escape or at least go out on his own terms and took it with one elbow and both hands.

Viggo knows Marcus is a friend, and this is going to make him a new target. But someone has to oay for the son's death, and Viggo can't look soft as the leader of this arm of the mob--they'd kill him. Viggo knew the cost. He knew what John would do. At this point he had nothing to lose,; he was dead anyway.

Wow. Viggo was a complete idiot. Let's see: 1) Rather than just fly his son out of the country (or at least somewhere remote), he instead tries to kill John Wick, putting himself directly in the path of an unhinged, well-trained killer. 2) He hires John Wick's closest, most loyal friend to kill him. Really? Marcus was pretty ruthless, but you really think he'll turn against his brother-in-arms for YEARS? 3) He orders a hit on John Wick in the Continental, despite knowing that Winston forbids "conducting business" on his grounds and will kill anyone who breaks that rule. He gave John another key ally, who was now more than happy to see Viggo go down for double-crossing him. 4) He blows a huge opportunity to kill John Wick instantly. He has him captured and down, yet instead of shooting him, he goes Bond Villain and decides to talk with him before then leaving and ordering his thugs to kill him. He gave Marcus plenty of time to get prepared and save John Wick. 5) He kills Marcus, and then calls John (while he is still in the city) and taunts him over it, even though John was willing to let Viggo go at that point. Yeah, I get Viggo was desperate, since John killed his son and wiped out his criminal empire, but that's just a death wish at that point. Movie was still great, though.
