As someone who's studying computer science (a dream/plan of mine since I was 14) while recovering from 5 years of severe chronic depression and other mental disorders (yes, diagnosed and all), I love seeing these honest videos of yours where you explain that even productive people like you struggle sometimes. They remind me that I am not failing my recovery if I still struggle from time to time, because that's something healthy people are not fully protected from either, they are just more protected than I am. Sometimes I feel bad because I am taking things very slow and still struggle a bunch, but if healthy people still struggle in their normal-paced lives, than I, as a mentally ill person, am totally allowed to struggle just as much in a slower paced schedule. It's something I have to remind myself of every single day, and your videos about this stuff really help with that. And on the other hand your productivity vidoes make me look forward to when I can work at my full potential again, because when I am in a good phase, I can be just as much of a workerbee as you in your good times. Just gotta be patient, I am out of the roughest phases of depression by now, so it's not that much of a long road ahead for me anymore.

You have depression because you think you have depression. Once you condition your brain into you having mental issues it gets reality. The real thing is to solve the issue causing that and not the depression itself

Well I totally understand u John. I have to do 2 exams and complete the MSc thesis in bioinformatics in 2 months. Plus, studying Python and making application for PhD (really REALLY time consuming). I totally understand you and I can say that in case I won't be able to graduate at the end of September I will be ok too. Many students from my year are already graduating right now, these days. (I have SMA condition, just saying) But they are not living my life, they are not learning programming, because they do Biology. I am doing Biology and trying to learn Informatics together. I chose this way. It will be my future. But I know that it won't be the end of the world if I will lose some good PhD opportunity because of my different attitude. Just do what u can. Take your time. I won't be able to be 100 focused if before breakfast I would not read my 4 5 pages of a book, now it is The Pillars of the earth KF. Take your time. Greetings, from Italy.

Of course I am fortunate. I love biology, and I forced my self to like bioinformatics too, since it is the only way through which I can fulfill a biology career. Bioinformatics did not exist 15 years ago. I am very lucky. Still, it was very hard to compete with let's say normal people, every day. Now it is quite hard and challenging. But this is also because I am 28 y.o. This guy, John, is so young, he has a very growth mindset. If he will be able not to loose his focus in the next 5 6 years, he will do great things.

Wow. Your videos always come at just the right time. I've been struggling, suffering with anxiety and feeling ovehwelmed. I've taken a week of to rest. Three days in, I'm starting to feel like me again - however, I was feeling guilty for taking time off, but this video is a reminder that we all need a bit of 'me' time, from time to time. We're not machines, we're not robots, we're human and need to rejuvenate from time to time.

You are by far my favorite channel. I love your honesty and how you share every aspect of your life, both good and bad. All of your advice really means a lot as it resembles what I am currently going through as well. The idea of rest seemed crazy to me, as I used to believe that I had to be productive every single day of the year. It's taking a lot of work, but I'm finally allowing myself to just chill for a bit. I hope you keep on resting, you deserve it!

I agree that taking time off is a key aspect of growth. It's often over summer break that I spend time on reflecting and coming up with new ways to approach the next school year. Take as much time off wherever and whenever you need John. By doing so, you can become a much more well-rounded person and produce quality videos for us. I'm excited that you're back!

Johan Chrispin listen,I know full well how that stuff works and I appreciate your concern but Im not one to kill myself I don't regret anything...I learn from my mistakes knowing full well I'll make a mistake today and not being unhappy but rather excited that tomorrow I'm gonna be a wiser person.. the girl I loved with all my heart killed herself as well, I know how crippling the depression can be for your loved ones and ,therefore, I learn and try...picking myself up and giving it my all to achieve what lays ahead of me and accepting it thusly. I am pursuing excellence, not success...because aiming for success will blind you, while on the other hand, if you have excellence... success will pursue YOU.. besides I'm ready to chase my dream in computing... I'm 4 grades ahead in maths and I could have a job as a game developer if I so wanted.. but that would take not only my chance to learn much much more from those who made mistakes, including myself, but also would stop me from living life like the teen that I am.....once again thank you for your time and for your concern..may God bless you, everyone and all of his creations.... Take care!

Don't worry about your English, it's pretty good. It didn't cross my mind you're not a native speaker, till I read your sentence saying you're not. As for non-native versus native speakers: a motivated non-native speaker can learn English better than native speakers who are not motivated. Take that from a non-native speaker who almost speaks English better than her mother tongue.

This is so inspiring. Such was my experience in my first year into architecture. It was more of art and I barely new how to hold a paint brush, let alone knowing of the different series of the 'B' pencil. Worst part is that everyone around me looked like they had it all figured out. Not once, not twice, did I get myself blasted by my lecturers. I was the class punching bag. I felt like a living joke for the first time in my life yet deep within me I knew I was more than capable of doing better. At one point in the second semester I just felt I had had enough and I decided to step aside for two weeks. There were thoughts of switching courses and everything but I'm grateful for a close friend of mine, Eric, who pulled my hand and brought me back on track. Second year has passed and in my own analysis, I have grown a lot in my academics and as a person. Currently catching up on a few reads to boost my self being and all and I must say I feel confident again in a long while. Most notably, "Start With Why" by Simon Sinek and "Tough times don't last, but Tough people do" by Robert Schuller have stood out for me. My only prayer is that in this third year that's fast approaching, I can compound my progress. Cheers from KE!

Hello john , i really hope you will feel better soon and the anxiety will gradually wear away . You are a very honest and brave person because i know there's a non-ending depth to the words we use when we want to describe our negative feelings or downfalls so i totally understand how brave and willing to be positive you are . While watching your video a thought crossed my mind and that is how there's a current social pressure where rest is considered a crucial part of progress but unfortunately it's approached in a stressful manner . It's like people stress themselves out to have rest .personally i believe rest has no actual specific form or rules , it could be just freeing yourself from the norms of whatever you've been doing or just changing your mindset and priorities for a short period of time . What you're passing through is the most relevant thing ever and coming from a person who's got straight stars in their igcse's i know how it feels to see people think you're always grinding , please dont let that upset you . You're a wonderful person , i wish you a very pleasant stay at harvard and a happy future wherever you go afterwards.

I really needed to hear this , since I started watching your channel I’ve always looked up to how hardworking and passionate you are and I always blamed myself for the times I assumed I wasn’t working as hard / not 24/7 365 as you said , so thank you for sharing this! 💖

I understand completely where you're coming from and wish you all the best my man. This video has also inspired me to develop to be a better person and try this mentality in my own life, I am so grateful I found your channel. I must say you are such an entertaining person to listen to. I have watched many other youtubers try to create these types of videos and others like it (a commentary or whatnot), and it is so great to see that you can deliver this amazing video and inspiring talk in one take. As compared to others who constantly cut and edit in order for themselves to not become boring or repetitive while you have kept me engaged the whole video.

I had been in the same situation as you and I literally agree with you. We are in journey of our life. Relax and keep consistent in action. Analogically, in finishing full marathon, man A run w moderate speed and consistent than man B run fast but exhausted too soon. Guess who may reach the finishing line first? Keep your pace and stay strong!

Thanks. I have been studying for 10+ hours straight these past few days, and only yesterday, when I experienced a bad headache and felt faint, did I realize that I have been pushing myself way too hard. I sort of had been starving myself as if I was punishing myself, and honestly it was a dumb move. I have been struggling with depression, anxiety and the feeling of failure all my life, so I thought maybe going all out with my studies would be a relief and all that. Something that would make me feel valued and actually have a purpose to go on. Although getting good grades didn’t make me as happy as I thought I would have been. It’s hard to understand, no one does, really. But thank you for this video. You reminded me that I needed to rest, to blow off steam and be free of what’s been chaining me these past few days. So I took a day off today, not studying or reading, and just took my friends out for lunch. I did felt relaxed for once. Gah, this was a long write. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks! With your outlook towards life and personality, you will definitely change people’s lives. Keep it up, dude! 🙌🏻

I just graduated university and am very much in a struggle period. Watching this video was really refreshing and made me feel less lonely. It's as if I know that I need to rest and get some head space but every time I leave it for a few hours, I feel guilty and the stress piles up. Would be great to make some more vids for us strugglers!!

Your comments about growth with relation to working out are very intriguing. A lot of people think that its a waste of time to work on themselves and if they just focus on outside things they can ignore their inner problems. The problem is, just like exercise, healing IS growth. After spring term I was feeling really burned out and struggled to make it through the end of classes, so during the next two weeks I basically lounged around the house, watched livestreams, and played games with friends. I hadn't had any guilt-free free time for almost a year, and since then I feel like I have more enthusiasm and perspective about life than I did for the entire last year. This proves to me that mental rest is absolutely as important as physical rest for growth. Really glad you're taking care of yourself, I was starting to wonder what had happened to you!

I just discovered your Channel last night. And it really makes me want to change my habits, in order to be proactive in what you're passionate for ! I'm really impressed by your hability to speak about how to feel happy while growing, to theorize it (also impressing to see such a young guy talking on it!) . This is an interesting subject because it's a fundamental need. Everybody wants to feel happy but we have to compose with our world to reach it... And maybe you can give us some keys to do it :D

Thank you for what you do and your honesty, John. This video reminded me of a really useful book, "The Mind Workout", by Mark Freeman. He's a mental health advocate, and does a lot of comparisson between physical and emotional fitness/health: the struggle is part of the way, like we struggle to become stronger at the gym, for example. He also has a KZbin channel, in case you want to check stuff from him. Saludos!
